SMO's review for 120-hr TESOL @Word Tesol Academy

I am a doctor and EFL teacher. I started my teaching career in 2021 while COVID-19 was going pandemic and traditional offline classes were getting to close. After I had polished my English proficiency, I wished to upgrade my teaching skill at a globally qualified organization.
I saw many accredited education centres for TESOL in the market. Frankly speaking, I enrolled at WTA as it offers with a fair price. However, what I gained was far more than I paid. Now, I have become more confident in my both online and offline classrooms. My students have been more engaged and pleased since I used well-prepared lesson plans and the teaching techniques.
I cannot stop enjoying the good outcomes from my students. Therefore, I have decided to continue with TEOL and TEYL courses for a better support to my students.

What was your funniest moment?

My first TEFL/TESOL Certificate

I have just started teaching English online and faced a lot of difficulties: how to work with kids and adults, what to do with beginners and how to teach advanced students if they've already known everything. But also preparing lesson plans - a real nightmare.

So, I decided to browse the web to solve these problems and feel more confident during lessons. I bumped into the 120-hours TEFL/TESOL course by World TESOL Academy completely by accident. I decided to try it and never regretted it. It is totally great course, which answered all my questions about teaching and even more - I feel more confident now and can really enjoy my lessons.Course information is provided in plain language and everything was clear and accurate. And at the end of each module, there were little tests so that I could understand how I learned the topic. I almost forgot to mention that there are some videos of lesson activities in the course, which everyone may use during their lessons.

I want to thank World TESOL Academy for the awesome course!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-racking moment was the passing of the last final test because the result of the test was dependent on whether I received a certificate. But I easily passed it on excellent results, because I studied hard during each module and wrote some notes
Pros
  • Online
  • Huge amount of useful information collected in one course
  • Affordable price
Cons
  • I would like to have more additional materials in the course (links to useful sites, podcasts, etc.)
  • There is no standard shipping my hard copy certificate in my region ( only express shipping that costs $35 - it's quite expensive for me)

Course Review

Honestly, the main component that attracted me the the course was the price. For something that offer so much content and is so well accredited, I was amazed to see that they also had the addition of being affordable. Going through the course was a breeze, as it was easy to read and extremely easy to understand; In addition, I liked the fact that tips were given on how to teach a particular lesson. The course did seem a bit long at first, but with enough dedication and time, it is definitely possible to finish it faster than anticipated. Although I personally never used the tutors, it was reassuring to know that they were always here in case I had a question or needed help. Overall, I really liked my experience and I would definitely recommend it to others as well.

120-hour TEFL/TESOL course - Great course

I found that this course covered all the material that I needed, with some great tips and ideas. I feel more confident now to move into teaching English, particularly online and with small groups of young learners in person. The platform was easy to use and the content was clear, with enough but not too much detail. The sections were short enough that I did not lose focus and was motivated to keep going. I particularly enjoyed the videos demonstrating teaching methods with real students as it gave a real idea of how this would play out in real life.

What would you improve about this program?
More videos and links to external resources.
Pros
  • Clear
  • Thorough
  • Enjoyable
Cons
  • Some quiz questions were subjective
  • To click back to different modules was time consuming
  • More external resources would be helpful

Interview

Why did you choose this program?

I chose the JET Program because friends and classmates had heard good things about the program. I felt like my chances of getting accepted and having the opportunity to explore and do more with Japan after my experiences as a study abroad student in high school and university in Japan was a good next step.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

The Japanese government operates the JET Program. It is a long drawn-out application process that takes months to complete all the steps, but there is a lot of useful information about the whole process that they mail to you to explain it. There are also a lot of JET Alumni with chapters all over who often assist with orientation and answering questions for potential new applicants to the program.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

I would recommend looking into as much information about the location you will be going to in Japan on the JET Program because every situation is different. Try to find out as much as you can about the specific region or city you will be placed in. Also, prepare some pictures or souvenirs from you hometown or country to share with people as a good icebreaker to introduce yourself to people when you arrive.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

Every situation is different. But in my case, I had about 12 classes per week to teach and prepare for ranging from kindergarten up to the 9th grade. I would be at work from 9 - 5 Monday - Friday and was sometimes required to work on weekends when there were special events at the school or in the community.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

Eating exotic food that I wasn't comfortable with was my biggest fear. Trying to stomach and attempt to eat foods that back home I would never imagine even trying to eat. Trying to keep an open mind, and attempt to experience at least eating the cuisine once, opened my eyes and stomach to some foods that I enjoy now but never would have even tried to eat before.
