Internship at Instituto Hemingway

I recently spent 2 months doing an internship at Instituto Hemingway and overall, it was a good experience.
Although sometimes there were very stressful moments, it allowed me to challenge myself and step out of my comfort zone.
The working environment was overall quite good, and working there allowed me to improve my Spanish a little bit.
I enjoyed working with the other interns and staff, and it helped me build my confidence.
Internships are a good way to gain experience and knowledge.
If you wish to take classes to improve the language, it is also possible.
I also really enjoyed participating in the school's free activities.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Working in another country as a foreigner is challenging and sometimes very difficult. To overcome these challenges, I recommend not setting too many expectations and find out what is required from the company before setting goals.
Pros
  • Step out of your comfort zone
  • Experience things from a different angle
  • Learn to adapt to new changes
Cons
  • Sometimes quite stressful
  • Language barrier can be a problem at times
  • Remaining calm can be hard at times

Great online lessons with fantastic teacher

I've been to many educational environments and This organization is in a class of its own. The staff is very calculated and professional, the foundation and fundamentals are tailored towards the student so there's no one-size fits all approach. anybody looking to grow in the education space by learning a new language, I don't think you can compare a college classroom to what this program offers, there's no unnecessary electives thats required. Only pure installation of the language and culture.

Eduardo was the best ever teacher I could have, professional and at the same time with deep knowledge of cultural issues, experimented traveller and nice person too.

I would highly recommend this experience for anyone interested in learning Spanish in a fast and efficient way

What would you improve about this program?
I have no improvement suggestions; I am completely satisfied with this course.
Pros
  • Great teacher
  • nice facility
  • helfpul staff
Cons
  • It was Spanish from Spain

This program is a must for people who love animals

This program was beyond amazing! I had the time of my life working with dogs at the animal shelter in Northern Spain. I really felt like I was making a difference in there lives. Not too mention being able to see a lot of city attractions along with other cities in Spain. This experience also taught me how to be more responsible and how to work with other people well. It is definitely an experience that without a doubt I will remember for the rest of my life and I would recommend this project to anyone who is interested in working with animals

  • The dogs were so fun to work with
  • I got see many of city attractions and other cities in Spain
Cons

Memorable experience in Spain

This program in Spain is so rewarding in so many ways. This country and this program is fantastic in block capitals. I met wonderful people, immersed myself in the culture , worked hard yet still had fun and relaxed, ate more than I should and laughed. This was a stunning experience that I would recommend to any traveler of any age

I feel this experience provided me more perspective on how other people live. It made me more humble and allowed me the chance to explore some difficult emotions around privilege which I think is important. If someone was hesitant I would tell them that the local team is amazing and super supportive. They ensure you are safe and taken care of. I would encourage anyone to go in with an open mind and remain flexible. Just embrace the culture and experience because your time will go by extremely fast.

What was your funniest moment?
I ate for the first time rabbit. This was one of the best thinks I ate. If you are not vegetarian, defenetly try it. You can eat it with the head off. It makes you not to think what you eating.
Pros
  • You will practice and gain confidence with the Spanish language
  • You will be inmersed in another culture
  • You will participate in ethical community service
Cons
  • Sign up early or the program you want may fill up
  • Your friends, relative and family will not be with you. Challenging if first time solo abroad
  • Best to plan ahead and take Spanish classes before you go

Alumni Interviews

These are in-depth Q&A sessions with verified alumni.

Why did you choose this program?

I wanted an opportunity to change my career path from a dissatisfying corporate job to a rewarding career that can take me traveling around the world and enable me to gain cultural experiences in Spain.

Instituto Hemingway had preplanned excursions included in the program that allowed me to do even more traveling and check off some things that were already on my bucket list, without the hassle of planning more things by myself. Not to mention, the pre-departure support, day of traveling support, and on-site support allowed me to be confident in my safety and ability to endure so a large adventure all on my own!!

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

The Instituto Hemingwa provided me with top quality information travel assistance, support staff and teachers who were extremely knowledgeable and made the whole experience extremely worthwhile.

They organized my program and also the accommodation in a fantastic shared apartment next to school, and assisted with holiday and activity options.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

If I were to do the course again, I would definitely choose a professional organization that is well-credentialed and respected like Hemingway. It makes it so much easier having a strong support base and experienced team.

I would definitely allow for more travel time either before or after the course, so you can get to appreciate the country you are visiting.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

The program is very solid and lots to fit in every day, as it is a compact course.

Having said that, there were still afternoons off and a couple of free days to chill. And an average day consisted of about 4 hours at school with a mixture of theory and practical class observations and activities.

After school, you would generally need to do 2 hours of homework or reading.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

I guess my only fear was not finishing the course or not being able to do the assignments and lesson plans in time. But the course structure and support of the teachers was a huge benefit in allaying my fears. This made a big difference in my ability to manage the course effectively and get everything done.

Interview

What is your favorite travel memory?

Up to now, I have had the privilege of visiting around 45 different cities from different countries, which makes this question incredibly difficult. For me, my favorite memories are almost always from things that went horribly wrong, but that I survived and became funny or enlightening later on. We need to believe in ourselves and this is something I always tell our colleagues and future students. We are much stronger than we think. Be fit, be strong, and trust yourself. We just need to grow up in terms of experiences and be out of our comfort area.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

In the jump from university to professional life, I have changed tremendously. Of course, this is a big transition for anyone, but it feels like my professional life is on the same track as my personal life – related to travel, full of challenges I set for myself, and linked to ongoing learning. I help with client service and setting up new programs for incoming Spanish learners, volunteers and interns by answering questions and arranging logistics. I also do a lot of outreach and work with everyone interested in study abroad or volunteer work, from college professors and on-campus student groups, to high schools and youth programs. Finally, I also get to lend a hand is developing new program and project offerings, which is lots of fun!

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

I could write a book about all of the positive and great stories I have heard from past students. One of my favorites is the happiness of a student who so badly wanted to work in a branch of the company he was doing an internship in Spain with us.

When he returned to his home in London, UK the company reached out to him and he was offered a good position. He is still working there today and is always so happy that his hard work turned into an opportunity.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

The program offered by Instituto Hemingway that interests me most is a volunteer project called permaculture. Volunteers get to live in a shared apartment but sustainability and hard work in the garden allotment are guaranteed. We also combine it with intensive Spanish lessons during the mornings Mon-Fri and we also combine them with cultural activities. The same volunteer program is applied to beach cleaning or animal welfare. Performing basic, daily, sustainable labour like this is something that many of us never need to do for ourselves and may not even know how to do!

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

At Instituto Hemingway I work with a team of young people from all over the world who support each other unconditionally and get to have fun together. I am proud of them every single morning when we meet to freely discuss our mistakes and challenges, and decide together how best to improve.

We are constantly improving and growing. I think Instituto Hemingway is special because it brings locals and foreigners together both through the programs offered and through the many people working there. This is why we call it Hemingway. This famous American author integrated himself with local people and this is what we want for our students while having fun.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

The sustainability of our programs is really important to us! As you say, programs really need to be mutually beneficial so that not just the volunteer, but the larger community gains from the experience. First of all, Instituto Hemingway is a local organization in Bilbao so we’re one of the important small businesses that drives the local economy.

We hire local staff, purchase supplies from local companies, and work with hundreds of host families to bring additional income into their households. We also establish and maintain long-lasting, sustainable relationships with the projects we work with. In some cases, the mutual benefit seems obvious, for instance when volunteers work in under-staffed local orphanages with kids or with animal shelters that really need the care and affection. I have always been fascinated with the intersection between business and non-profits, and I truly believe that social enterprise is the key to making lasting social change
