Colorado Youth for a Change

Why choose Colorado Youth for a Change?

Colorado Youth for a Change (CYC) is an educational nonprofit organization with a statewide scope. CYC addresses barriers to learning by providing individualized supports throughout pivotal stages of students' education journeys. We provide a continuum of services from Prekindergarten through high school to help students find success through tutoring, case management, and outreach to help in-school youth remain in school or out-of-school youth return to school. We envision an equitable education system where each student has access to the resources they need to maximize their own learning and growth.

Join K-3 Reading Corps hosted by Colorado Youth for a Change!

This is my third service term serving in the Colorado Reading Corps, and it has been a life changing experience for me. Before I found the Reading Corps and Colorado Youth for a Change, I struggled to find something that would help me build a career and give me experience before I decided to go back to college. I found that and more when I joined the Reading Corps. I not only got first-hand experience in the education field, but I also gained more knowledge and professional skills with support from the kindest people. I am more equipped to dive deeper in the education field than many new graduate professionals and many paraprofessionals with years of experience, and with the benefit of the Segal Education Award, I am also more financially prepared to continue my education. The staff of Colorado Youth for a Change and the Reading Corps are very knowledgeable, and provide several opportunities for support from staff and peers alike. They have created an environment that is designed to be inclusive and uplifting, and take the time to help members relearn and recognize marginalized identities to provide a safe, or brave, space for all members, students, and staff. They have also given me many opportunities to grow in leadership and public speaking. As a Reading Corps member, my role is tutoring students Kindergarten through third grade on their reading skills. The materials are scientifically researched to provide students with consistent practice on the reading skills they need to succeed, and the program model is designed to uplift and encourage students as they grow. I have seen life changing growth in the students I have worked with, regardless of their background or personal challenges. Helping students read doesn't just affect them academically; it also gives them confidence and social skills they didn't have before. Helping these students with their confidence also helped me with my confidence; they have even taught me things I didn't realize I needed. I feel more well-rounded, and ready to tackle any adventure knowing I have the skills and confidence needed. I am proud of my students, and I am also proud of myself for the things I have accomplished through Reading Corps. I encourage everyone looking for something to add more to their life to join the Reading Corps. This program has changed my life, students lives, and it can change yours too.

What was your funniest moment?
Working with young students rarely has a dull moment, and I could fill a journal with all of the funny things these students say and do. However, one of my favorite funny moments was having a first grade student ask me if I was a rockstar because of my facial piercings, and then proceeded to ask if I was poor because I wore the same pair of shoes everyday. This was during my first year as a Reading Corps tutor and continues to baffle me and make me laugh.
Pros
  • Inclusive and Caring Environment
  • Amazing Staff and Support
  • Learning Valuable Professional and Life Skills with a Monthly Living Stipend and Education Award
Cons
  • Because you are sometimes the only tutor at the school you serve, some tutors can feel lonely from time to time, but there is always support for you at your site and within the Reading Corps community.
  • While there is a decent living stipend, once the service term is over, it can be difficult finding something to keep income during the summer between terms
  • Because of state/national serving and volunteering regulations, you can only serve four (4) service terms
