Hetta Huskies

Why choose Hetta Huskies?

Hetta Huskies offers both short and multi-day safaris from our farm base, 220km inside the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland. Whilst the majority of our sled-dog safaris meander through the northernmost reaches of Europe's ancient boreal (Taiga) forests, some of our multi-day safaris also venture up onto the high plateaus of the Arctic tundra.

Our commitment to high standards extends across every aspect of our business and we hope that you will not only enjoy our comprehensive website but also visit us and take part in one of our safaris. Many visitors have left stating that their time mushing with our guides and dogs was one of the most thrilling and memorable experiences of their lives.

Working as a Dog Handler

Coming here is the best thing I ever did (so far). It made me smile every single day, despite the hard work and long days. It’s definitely not for everyone, but if you love dogs and working hard, this place might be perfect for you. Expect long days, windy/wet and cold weather, a soar back, and mood swings. To be honest, I loved the long dark days, the hard-physical work, the dogs and also the team effort. Even though you don’t get enough sleep, the dogs will give you so much energy and feeding underneath the stars with the northern lights high up in the sky is something that makes you shiver every single time. This place is really good at seeing people's potential and using everyone’s strengths. In the beginning, you are expected to do the basic jobs and built up your knowledge, but the longer you stay the more responsibilities you get and I found this place getting even more and more fun towards the end. I loved a lot of things about this place but dogsledding and dog handling were my favourites. Working in a team can be a challenge for some persons to; everyone is different and comes here with their own skills, but it’s really interesting to learn new things from everyone. There is definitely not a stereotype Hetta Huskies guide, you all have two things in common: you love to work your ass off and you love the dogs (otherwise you won’t last long). If you are not scared of challenges and are open to learning new skills with a positive mindset, you should spent some months here. And if you fall in love with this place like I did, you might even want to come back 😊

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Stay long enough so you take the time to learn all the dog names. It isn't a place for a short stay as it takes a bit of time to understand the work, the dogs and the farm.
