Khmer Ocean Life

Why choose Khmer Ocean Life?

Khmer Ocean Life (KOL) works across all coastal provinces in Cambodia, undertaking population monitoring (land and boat surveys and passive acoustic monitoring) of marine wildlife species, specifically Irrawaddy dolphins, Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, Indo-Pacific finless porpoises, dugongs, green sea turtles, and hawksbill turtles. By gaining a deeper understanding of their distribution, abundance, and ecology, we aim to cooperate with decision-makers and communities to inform sustainable conservation strategy and legislation throughout the Cambodian marine environment, which will ultimately protect these threatened species. Furthermore, through engaging local fishermen, KOL aims to educate coastal communities on the importance of conservation and facilitate responsible fishery and aquaculture practices, as well as strengthen relationships between Khmer people and the natural environment.

Marine conservation work at it's best!

Working with the Khmer Ocean Life team for the last couple of months has been truly inspiring!

This small group of researchers, volunteers and locals are passionate about their mission and dedicated to implementing research that goes hand-in-hand with community outreach and involvement. Whether it's a day on the boat surveying for dolphins, teaching a lesson to local school kids, or analyzing data on shore, every day is a fun learning experience.

I would highly recommend Khmer Ocean Life to any volunteers who are interested Cambodia's diverse culture and marine environment.

Exciting conservation work with an amazing team!

The team at Khmer Ocean Life is an absolute delight to work with. I am really looking forward to continuing to develop my skills and contributing to KOL's important conservation work, research, and community empowerment - an opportunity and experience that I will undoubtedly cherish forever.

I am enjoying being exposed to Khmer culture and local knowledge of conservation, and sharing new knowledge so that the dolphins, dugongs, and sea turtles, as well as the fishing communities, can all be supported sustainably into the future!
