What is the ideal length of time to spend volunteering?

Just wondering if it is worth doing this program for only 3 weeks or a month, maximum. I don't have much time in the country and am concerned as to whether is would do more harm than good to spend such a short time there. Thanks for any feedback!!
Definitely enough time to get a feeling for the country and to give back. First time, I went for 3 weeks and then returned for 6 weeks the next year.
