A Deep Dive Into Medicine with Amazing Experiences

The Philotimo Med Shadowing Program was everything I hoped for and more! Watching surgeries, from simple procedures to complex ones, really opened my eyes to the world of medicine. The doctors were amazing, and Stavros was always around to offer guidance. The old buggy tour was a great way to meet people, and the Meteora excursion was out of this world. Larissa is the safest, most charming city. It felt like I was in a small town with a huge heart – and the food was so good. The accommodation felt like a home away from home, and I loved it.

Pros
  • Fantastic group activities and excursions.
  • Exposure to different types of surgeries.

An Unforgettable Journey in Medicine and Culture!

My two-week shadowing program at the Philotimo Med in Larissa was nothing short of extraordinary! As a high school senior, this was my first time inside a surgery room, and I was absolutely captivated. I had the chance to observe two major surgeries: a laparoscopic gallbladder removal and a knee replacement. The precision of the surgeons and the teamwork in the operating room were incredible.
Aside from the medical experience, the program also included a fantastic excursion to Meteora, where we explored the stunning monasteries perched on rock formations. The views were breathtaking, and it was a great mix of learning and relaxation. The food was amazing – every meal was a feast, and I’ll never forget the delicious Greek breakfasts at our accommodation, which were the perfect start to each day.
Stavros, the program director, was always there to help with anything we needed. Whether it was advice about the hospital or tips for exploring Larissa, he made sure we were comfortable and informed at all times. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience!

After my two weeks in the internship program in Greece. I can tell you that Every moment of Philotimo Med Abroad was worth it! The number of surgeries, departments, and the whole process is just amazing. From shadowing in general surgery to working with patients in rehabilitation, I learned more than I ever expected. Beyond My Expectations – A Must for Pre-Meds!

Spending two weeks in the ICU and shadowing top surgeons was life-changing. The robotic surgery exposure was incredible, and the hospital's facilities were outstanding. Greek food was a highlight – the best gyros ever! Our accommodation was nice and safe. Very clean rooms, daily cleaning, and towel replacement. Their breakfast was plain but good. A little boring after 2 weeks but hey! we are here for learning not for fun as Stavros always said. The excursions gave me a deeper appreciation of Greece’s rich history. Thank you, Stavros, for making this program amazing!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Watching a team of surgeons work together in perfect harmony during an emergency trauma surgery was jaw-dropping. It was like witnessing a perfectly choreographed dance. I wish I knew Greek.

Perfect Blend of Medicine & Exploration!

During my 2 weeks program in Larissa, Greece. From day one, I felt welcomed in the hospital. I rotated through radiology and cardiology, even observing a pacemaker implantation. The accommodation was modern and very close to everything. Let me tell you about the amount of shadowing and the volunteering hours I gained plus the experience the medical knowledge I gained was priceless.

The city of Larissa itself was a dream – the fresh food, ancient ruins, and breathtaking beaches made every moment special. Stavros and the team went above and beyond!

Hands-On Learning Like Never Before!

During my 2 weeks at Philotimo Med Larissa Program. I shadowed in pediatrics and even got to assist with patient care! The doctors were so encouraging and took the time to explain the procedures. I saw a heart surgery that left me in awe! We participated in different medical procedures and had the opportunity to do lab research at the University of Thessaly. I am so blessed to had the chance to be a Philotimo fellow. Greece is stunning, and I miss the sunsets already. Stavros, you made this experience unforgettable!

Unmatched Medical Exposure & Cultural Immersion!

Philotimo Med Abroad gave me a deeper understanding of medicine. I observed live surgeries, shadowed in dermatology, and participated in a cutting-edge lab. Take into consideration that participating in the program will keep you busy from early morning to late evening. When you go back to the accommodation, you just want to eat and go to sleep.

I also fell in love with Greek cuisine and history. Exploring Athens and the Parthenon was incredible! This program truly balances education and adventure. Thank you, Stavros, for an incredible journey!

What was your funniest moment?
During my day off, I decided to take a trip to the beach, and I met this group of locals who offered to help me and teach me about Belika Beach, we spent the whole day together and invited me to eat, play, and return back to the city with them. This was such a crazy experience for me.

A True Medical and Cultural Adventure!

Shadowing in the ER and assisting with minor procedures gave me hands-on learning beyond my wildest dreams. The hospitals were top-tier, and I was lucky to see a robotic-assisted surgery in action! Our afternoons were also full of activities. We visited the shelter where I had the chance to make a performance. Stavros guided me to create a very impressive project for the children of the shelter.

In general, the food, the people, and the excursions to Meteora and Mount Olympus made my stay magical. Stavros, you are an incredible leader – thank you for everything!

What was your funniest moment?
As the children at the shelter begin to dance to Arabic music, they race to grab a chair during our musical chairs project. So much fun.
