Alumni Spotlight: Danielle Breen

Hi all, my name is Danielle and I studied abroad during spring 2015 in Aix-en-Provence, France. I currently work as a Study Abroad Peer Advisor at my university, and hope to travel more around Europe in the future!

Danielle is a senior double majoring in French and sociology at the University of Colorado Boulder. She's originally from the Boston area, and hopes to move back after graduation!

Why did you pick this program?

I picked IAU because the program offered many of the courses I needed for my French major. I also liked the idea of studying abroad on a provider program, since it was my first time traveling abroad and I wanted a little extra support. I loved the southern France location as well!

What do you tell your friends who are thinking about going abroad?

I tell them to really think about their goals and what they hope to get out of study abroad. It really is about more than just where you are, so you want to ensure you're going to be attending a great university offering courses you're interested in.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

If you don't speak any French, learn some basic phrases before your program starts. It will go a long way.

What's your favorite story to tell about your time abroad?

My friend and I were out at a bar in Paris one night, and she didn't speak much French. She made a really funny mistake. Instead of saying "merci beaucoup" to the bartender, she said "merci beau cu," or "thank you beautiful ass."

What's the best thing to do in Aix?

I really liked exploring all the cool little cafes in the city. You can't go wrong with French coffee! I also stayed over the summer, so I got to see all the beautiful lavender fields in bloom. Definitely something you want to see if you're around during that time!
