Why did you pick this program?
Liz: I chose ARCC because of its balance of service work, education and adventure. I've wanted to explore Eastern Africa ever since my childhood and my parents never felt comfortable sending me there by myself. When I found out that I could go there with leaders that had been before and knew what they were doing, I was allowed to go!
What do you tell your friends who are thinking about going abroad?
Liz: IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE! I get very excited when I find out my friends are traveling because I know that they are about to endure on a crazy, fun adventure.
Traveling abroad stretches one in ways that can't be found in the States. Whether it's cooking a food you've never had before, playing a game you've never heard of, or teaching a class of children a subject you don't have the slightest idea about, you will learn so much about yourself and about others!
What's your favorite story to tell about your time abroad?
Liz: I loved when we volunteered on a rhino sanctuary in Uganda. We worked there for about a week working on the grounds and watching the rhinos. To be so close to such a rare animal was such a treat. We even got to help assist the vet one day with a wound that one of the rhinos got. It was such an experience to work alongside with Ugandian Rangers helping them protect such a prized animal from poachers.
What made this trip meaningful to you, or how did this trip change your perceptions or future path?
Liz: Being able to travel outside of my suburban bubble and see different parts of the world changed not only my day to day view on life but also the career path I want to follow.
Before my trip I had no idea what I wanted to study in school but after seeing the major need for water around the world, I have decided to study water conservation and sustainably at Colorado State University.
What will the food be like?
Liz: Different. No matter where you go in the world, the American version will be very different. I would suggest to erase all expectations and constantly be thankful that you are able to be exposed to a new culture and their food. Bon appetite!
