What is your favorite travel memory?
I have very good memories from Nepal. Eight of the world’s ten highest peaks are there, and the views are breathtaking! People are so friendly and towns are so exotic, I just fell in love with it. I spent most of the time traveling, taking photos, and chatting with other travelers from all around the world. That was really an amazing and memorable time of my life.
Once, I talked to this old lady who asked me where I am from. I told her I live in Hong Kong now, and this made her so happy as she said she knows a guy from Hong Kong whose name is John; she said I must know John as he also lives there. For this old lady, the world meant a village of 100 residents, and I did not have the heart to tell her that Hong Kong has 7.5 million people.
How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?
I learned to not fear challenges or being out of my comfort zone. Most importantly, I learned to say “yes, let’s do this!” more often. We’ve had an incredible parade of talented people – staff and fellows – passing through the organization, bringing great work and energy, and going on to other challenges. It is humbling and empowering, and it has expanded my sense of gratitude exponentially.
What is the best story you've heard from a return student?
The best story that we have heard is of a student who got inspired to do her Masters in Sustainable Development. She was so impressed by the work of social enterprises in India that she decided to pursue a career in Social Impact. Here is her story:
"I vividly recall the time I landed in Mumbai. I covered a distance of 15,000 kilometers to be in the City of Dreams, a city that never sleeps. I had a burning passion to witness and hopefully be a part of the Social Impact Industry as I had read a lot about it. Finally, I was here in this city; a dream had finally come true!
After the initial culture shock, I got acclimatized to the city which welcomed me with open arms. Through the next couple of days, I learnt about Microfinance, Clean Tech, Gender, Women Empowerment, and Livelihood. I learnt so much, and it was truly a defining moment for me.
The conclusion I reached was unequivocal. How do I give back? How can I use my abilities to uplift society? Realizing that I still had a lot to learn, I participated in local initiatives like Marketing, Fundraising, Finance, etc. I was particularly impressed with hackathons.
For the traveler and the curious, this opportunity is golden. These social impact journeys are week-long expeditions of discovery and insights in the land of India – which is truly majestic! It gave me a tremendous sense of fulfillment and purpose to use my talents and skills for the betterment of the society. With this experience, I decided to pursue a Masters in Sustainability!”
If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?
I’d choose a Social Impact Journey where the participants get a greater self-knowledge and greater confidence in their own abilities and leadership style as change makers. It’s an opportunity to explore your role in dealing with complex global issues and be inspired by sharing this experience with a diverse group of women from all over the world.
What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?
We are committed to giving our participants passion, care, and commitment, and we work hard to make sure that they have an amazing time with us.
TribesForGood is unique in that we attract great professionals with extensive experience as well as a diversity of individuals from across the world. At the same time, we’re small enough to have a friendly environment where everyone feels connected and part of our tribe.
What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?
I believe that the biggest factor is having the right team that moves together towards achieving a common mission. It is important to bring together a team that believes in your mission and brings the required skills to achieve it. We have been fortunate to bring in individuals who believe in changing the world, one step at a time.
