What is your favorite travel memory?
Recuerdo especialmente los viajes realizados a Galicia y Andalucía el curso pasado. Viajé con el mismo grupo de estudiantes norteamericanos en ambos viajes. El entusiasmo y el interés del grupo por conocer más sobre España hizo que los cuatro días que pasamos juntos en cada viaje fueran especiales. Este tipo de viajes, fuera del entorno de las clases, sirven para que los estudiantes conozcan mejor y valoren más nuestra cultura, nuestra historia y nuestras costumbres.
(I particularly remember the trips we made to Galicia and Andalusia last year. I traveled with the same group of American students on both trips. Their enthusiasm and interest to learn more about Spain made these four days we spent together special. This type of trips, outside the classrooms, serve for students to get to know and appreciate our culture, our history and our customs).
How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?
Este tiempo que llevo como profesor en el Instituto Franklin-UAH me ha servido profesionalmente para mejorar mis habilidades y mis destrezas en la gestión del aula, la planificación de las clases, la creación de materiales, etc.
Personalmente me ha ayudado a conocer mucho mejor la cultura de mis estudiantes estadounidenses y a valorar sus costumbres. Este tiempo me ha servido también para cambiar mis ideas sobre EE.UU. y sus gentes, rechazando algunos estereotipos que tenía sobre ellos; para conocer la diversidad cultural y racial del país y la riqueza que esto aporta; para entender y comprender las necesidades, las aspiraciones y los sueños de las nuevas generaciones de estadounidenses.
(The time I've spent as a teacher at the Franklin-UAH Institute has helped me to improve professionally my skills and my capacities in classroom management, class planning, creation of materials, etc.
Personally, it has helped me learn more about the culture of my American students and to value their customs. This time has also helped me to change my ideas about America and its people, rejecting some stereotypes I had about them; to know the cultural and racial diversity of the country and the wealth that this brings; to understand and comprehend the needs, aspirations and dreams of the new generations of Americans today).
What is the best story you've heard from a return student?
No podría quedarme con una sola historia. Sí puedo decir que he podido comprobar cómo han ido cambiando las vidas de mis estudiantes durante estos años. He sido testigo de su crecimiento personal: algunos de mis estudiantes han conseguido mejores trabajos (algunos relacionados con sus estudios en España); han cambiado de ciudad de residencia; se han casado y han tenido hijos...
Sí podría señalar que me ha hecho especial ilusión ver que algunas de las relaciones de amistad, que nacieron en España cuando estudiaban en alguno de nuestros programas, se siguen manteniendo en EE.UU. varios años después.
(I couldn't keep a single story. I can attest that I have been able to see how the lives of my students have changed during these years. I have witnessed their personal growth: some of my students have gotten better jobs (some related to their studies in Spain); they have changed their city of residence; they have married and had children ...
Yes, I could point out that it has made me particularly excited to see that some of the friendships born in Spain when they were studying in one of our programs are still maintained in the US several years later).
If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?
Creo que elegiría alguno de nuestros semestres de primavera u otoño del programa Study Abroad. Este programa da la posibilidad de estudiar y vivir en Alcalá de Henares, Madrid (España) durante casi cuatro meses. En este tiempo los estudiantes pueden asistir a varias clases y participar en varios de nuestros viajes culturales por ciudades de interés histórico y cultural internacional. Además, tienen la posibilidad de hacer sus viajes personales por algunos de las ciudades más importantes del país para conocer la diversidad cultural y lingüística de España, algo que les ayudará tanto en su crecimiento personal como en su conocimiento de nuestra cultura y nuestras costumbres.
(I think I would choose one of our spring or fall semesters from the Study Abroad program. This program offers the possibility to study and live in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid (Spain) for almost four months. During this time, students can attend several classes and participate in several of our cultural trips through historical and cultural cities. In addition to this, they have the possibility of journeying on their own through some of the most important cities in the country to learn about the cultural and linguistic diversity of Spain, something that will help them both in their personal growth and in their knowledge of our culture and customs).
What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?
Destacaría por encima de todo tanto la profesionalidad de nuestro staff como su trato personal con nuestros estudiantes. Cada una de las personas del equipo trabaja con los estudiantes de forma que éstos puedan sentirse a gusto fuera de su zona de confort.
Me he sentido orgulloso de este equipo en numerosas ocasiones, pero, si tuviera que resaltar una sola vez, diría que en aquellas ocasiones en las que el número de estudiantes es mayor y cada uno de nosotros tiene que hacer un mayor esfuerzo por dar lo mejor de sí mismo.
(I would highlight both the professionalism of our staff and their personalized treatment towards our students. Each person in the team works with the students so that they can feel at ease outside their comfort zone.
I have been proud of this team on numerous occasions, but if I had to highlight one particular time, I would highlight those occasions when the number of students is bigger and each one of us has to make a greater effort to do our best by ourselves).
What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?
Creo que el factor más importante para que una empresa tenga éxito es el trabajo en equipo. En mi opinión, un equipo cohesionado, en el que fluyan las buenas relaciones personales, en el que cada persona tenga un rol definido, en el que el trabajo de cada persona sea valorado por los demás, puede ayudar al éxito de una empresa.
(I think the most important factor for a company to succeed is teamwork. In my opinion, a cohesive team, in which good personal relationships flow, in which each person has a defined role, in which each person's work is valued by others, can help a company achieve success).
