My Internship in Sweden

When going into a new internship (let alone to a new country), one can never be fully prepared, but Global Experiences came very close. They found the perfect match for me at Foodla, a food-tech startup located right in the heart of Stockholm. I did a variety of research, ranging from looking for startup funding, to investigating European agricultural data, to exploring similar companies in English speaking countries. I worked extremely well with my supervisor, which truly made me even more invested in the company. GE also arranged for multiple interviews with my supervisor before the internship even started, to make the transition upon moving to Sweden as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Simply put, I felt like more than just an intern - I was truly experiencing what it was like to live and work in Sweden, and I have GE's efforts to thank for that.

Stockholm Internship

Spending the summer in Stockholm was incredible. It was an unforgettable experience in a beautiful and exciting city all while getting some great work experience at the same time. The start-up culture in Stockholm makes it a pretty unique work environment that you can learn a lot from. Through both my internship and living in a city abroad, I have learned to be more independent and responsible and have felt growth during the program. That being said, Stockholm is a fantastic city that was easy to adapt to. Most people speak English which makes it easy to communicate. The public transportation system is super easy to use. There are plenty of great and diverse food options. The whole city I found to be quite clean and safe. I made great connections with others on the trip and explored the city together. The nightlife and sights around the city never got old. This program was an amazing opportunity in a city with plenty for everyone. I highly recommend this program.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
The time goes by so fast so I would recommend that going into this program you plan out some weekends in advance to make sure you make the most of the time. It's not great when you realize you can't do things during the trip because you didn't plan anything in time.

Go to London and Learn Things!

Anyone who attends this program will benefit from it, not only from the exciting excursions, but also from the site visits to local businesses. We toured Cambridge, went on a walking tour of London, and ended the trip with champagne at the top of the Shard. The visits to local businesses were very informative. The best site visits to me were to Edspace, a startup focusing on providing space for new businesses focusing on developing education, and to the Chamber of Commerce. The Edspace visit taught us a lot about how startups work and the differences between a standard business. The presentation at the Chamber of Commerce explained about the differences between London and the United States, with a focus on comparisons to New York. You will not only have fun on this trip, but you will also learn plenty. Definitely go if you can, you will get a lot from it.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Try to pack as light as you can on the way their, so you can back plenty of souvenirs.

Internship in Stockholm

Stockholm is a wonderful place to have an internship. It is beautiful, easy to get around with super convenient public transportation, the weather is perfect, great food, fun nightlife and very cool places to go for day trips. But in regards to working Stockholm, this is the place to be. Most people here speak English so its very easy to communicate with people. But is also great to experience a new culture and learn how other people do things in a different country. You can also expand your networking circle and meet so many new people. I have learned so much about myself and the work world from this internship abroad.

Stockholm

Stockholm is the perfect city for an internship, there are a lot of exciting start-ups in the city and other young companies that welcome interns with open arms and make you feel like you belong. No internship placement is perfect, but Global Experience gets as close as possible. I signed up for the journalism program and got to work for a News app where I got to write all day long and drink a lot of free coffee. Stockholm can be a little intimidating at first, but everyone here speaks English and once you learn your way around its super easy. There isn't a large tourism industry in Stockholm, but there are still tons of things to do. The city is full of museums, cafes to discover, and tons of concerts to go to. Our living situation was amazing we got a large spacious apartment that you won’t find in other cities. Global Experience also does a great job of setting up a few day trips which helps you see parts of the city and country you may not have seen on your own. Everyone from Global Experiences was incredible and I can’t imagine a better experience. The only bad part about my internship was leaving.

What would you improve about this program?
I would have liked another month. I learned a lot in eight weeks, but I feel like I could have stayed longer. I was in the first ever Stockholm program for G.E. and I'm sure it will only get better in the upcoming years.

What is your favorite travel memory?

My favorite travel memory has to be my internship abroad through Global Experiences. I had a journalism internship in Stockholm, Sweden and it was the best professional experience I could have ever wished for. Every minute in Sweden felt like a dream come true. The people were incredible, the city was beautiful, there was always something new to experience, and I had never been happier.

Interning in Sweden helped me grow professionally and personally. I gained more confidence, improved my writing skills, and walked away a better person. Without a doubt, I can say Stockholm was the best experience of my entire life.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Working at Global Experiences has been an extremely interesting and rewarding experience. I came in as an intern, but over the course of a few months, I became a full-time employee. Originally, my skillset was primarily writing, but at GE I’ve been able to expand my skill set and learn so much more. My SEO and marketing skills have grown leaps and bounds. I've been able to learn so much and at the same time bring my original ideas to the table.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

At GE, we all love hearing about our interns' experiences. In my role, I'm lucky to not only hear about every intern's journey, but also get to write about them. I've written a bunch of student experience blogs that highlight an intern's journey from beginning to end. It's hard to pick a favorite because every intern's story is unique and special.

One that really stood out to me was a summer intern in Barcelona named Ryan. He worked extremely hard to make sure he could go on the program. Interning abroad helped him follow his dream and take positive steps in his career. I got to write a student experience blog about him, and it was great to hear how much the program changed his life.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

If I had to do the program all over again, I would choose Stockholm every time. I loved the city so much, and it really was the perfect place to intern. I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything in the world.

However, if I got to do the program a second time, I would go to San José, Costa Rica. San José has some great opportunities and sounds like an exciting place to intern. There’s a lot to explore and experience in San José that is much different than what I’m used to.

I’m a big believer that interning abroad is about stepping outside your comfort zone and experience something new. Stockholm forced me to do that, and I think San José would provide a similar experience.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

From the tailored internships to the career coaching, and so much more, there is a lot that makes GE unique. However, I think the thing that separates us most is how much we care about each intern. We’re not here to find any random internship for an intern. We’re here to find the perfect internship for each intern. Each member of the GE team works to make sure that every student/young professional has a once in a lifetime experience. From what I’ve seen and experienced, there isn’t a company out there that cares about their interns as much as Global Experiences does.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

I don’t think there is one factor that causes a company to be successful. However, I think a lot of it comes back to caring about each intern and treating them as an individual. In our business, you have to understand no two interns are the exact same and they’re all looking for different experiences. We have to continually remember that in order to be successful. Caring about each intern doesn’t just mean we’ll provide incredible experiences, but it also ensures we’ll have more students and young professionals come to us looking for similar experiences abroad.
