9-Week Field Guide Course

9-Week Field Guide Course

Taking part in the 9-week field guide course was one of the most enriching and transformative experiences I’ve ever had. From the very first day, it was clear that this program was designed not only to educate but to inspire a deep connection with the natural world.

The course covered a wide range of topics essential to field guiding, including animal behavior, plant identification, birding, tracking, geology, and ecology. What stood out most was the hands-on approach—daily game drives, bush walks, and practical sessions that brought the theory to life. Learning to identify bird calls, track animals on foot, and interpret the environment with a guide’s eye was both challenging and deeply rewarding.

The instructors were passionate, highly knowledgeable, and supportive. They pushed us to grow while always prioritizing safety and respect for nature. The camaraderie among the students was another highlight—spending nine weeks together in the bush created strong bonds and lifelong friendships.

Accommodation and facilities were basic but comfortable, and being immersed in nature 24/7 added to the authenticity of the experience. Waking up to the sounds of the wild every morning was unforgettable.

By the end of the course, I felt confident in my knowledge and skills, and ready to pursue guiding as a career or simply be a more informed and responsible explorer of the natural world. Whether you're looking to start a career in wildlife tourism or simply want to deepen your connection to nature, I highly recommend this course.

What an amazing experience!!

My 9-week stay at Kukuma wildlife was one for the books!! What an amazing course it was, here we learned everything!! From small to large animals! We also had the opportunity to visit an endangered wildlife centre. From early mornings in the bush or in the lecture room to nights around the fire laughing our heads off, sharing stories.

The Kalahari stars were something to experience. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who dreams of being a field guide.

I would do it all over again in a heartbeat!

A year of growth and discovery

My 9 week stay at Kukuma wildlife allowed me to enrich myself within the South African wildlife and learn what it takes to be a field guide and how much fun it can be. It was very daunting at first, but I couldn’t be happier with my decision the housing is clean and quite spacious, the instructors are so supportive and helpful, it was very fun having nights around the fire talking and laughing about the day. The program was very well thought out with both practical and theoretical activities and exams to complete the course, a perfect blend of hands on learning. Kukuma wildlife thank you for the amazing time and all experience and knowledge I gained thanks to you and all the wonderful instructors and staff.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Be more involved with the activities as the instructors realise try to push you out of your shell to try more things and by the end I as so sad I missed out on some of the activities in the beginning due to it being a new environment and new people

Kukama field guide course

My time at Kukama Wildlife College was one word. UNDESCRIBABLE!

I just spent 9 weeks at a wildlife college in South Africa, and it flew by! The entire course was amazing, but my favorite part was spending so much time in the bush. I had an awesome time immersed in nature and loved experiencing all the traditional South African foods. Wish it was longer, but unforgettable adventures in the African bush made it truly special. I cannot wait to return and support their other conservation projects! Thank you to my bush family, Kukama.

Bird watching at Kukama Wildlife College

Our recent birding trip to Kukama Wildlife College was a truly memorable experience. From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by the warm hospitality and the serene, natural setting. The college is beautifully nestled in a landscape rich with biodiversity, making it an ideal location for bird enthusiasts.

The guided birding sessions were the highlight of our visit. Our guide was not only knowledgeable but also incredibly passionate, which made the experience all the more engaging. We were able to spot a wide variety of bird species. The early morning walks were peaceful and rewarding, offering breathtaking views.

Accommodation was comfortable and well-maintained, and the meals were hearty and delicious — a perfect way to refuel after long hours in the field. The staff were courteous and went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed.

Overall, Kukama Wildlife College exceeded our expectations. It’s a hidden gem for birders and nature lovers alike. We’re already looking forward to our next visit!

Christiaan and Nikki has made it such a memorable experience!
