Oxford Scholastica Review

Oxford Scholastica Academy was the first-ever summer program that I attended. Despite being extremely worried about travelling alone to a new country, Oxford Scholastica Academy's activity coordinators and tutors made the experience so welcoming.

Out of the many subjects that OSA had offered, I chose the discovery medicine course. We explored topics like heart diseases, clinical trials, and diagnostics. We had also done hands-on practicals such as presentations on specific cardiovascular diseases and a heart dissection. I loved how hands-on the whole experience was, from using a UV light to check how cleanly we've washed our hands in case of a surgery to dissecting and looking at a pig's heart. I also enjoyed all the self-study and articles that were provided to me. It allowed me to use skills like critical thinking to enhance my knowledge in medicine. In addition to this, the tutors at OSA are extremely patient. They teach the lectures in an easy and efficient way to learn. Apart from the lectures, she had also described what it would be like to study medicine, giving me more insight into the major. She was extremely kind and friendly, allowing me to learn and study efficiently.

Other than the academic side of OSA, I was able to learn lots of life skills, such as independence, learning how to take care of myself, navigation and so on. OSA gives enough freedom for students to go and independently explore the town while also keeping track of their safety. During my time there, I learnt how to navigate around the cities, like looking for restaurants and different sightseeing locations. I faced some challenges with payment since I only brought cash, while most restaurants used card or e-wallet payment. To work around this issue, I researched locations that accepted cash before visiting. This experience taught me valuable skills, such as managing my own money and finding nutritious yet affordable meals.

Lastly, the OSA experience allowed me the opportunity to make new and long-lasting friendships. Throughout the program, I got to connect with my housemates and peers through game nights and sports in the park. I had managed to connect with students from all over the world, each bringing their own unique perspectives and experiences. These friendships went beyond academics, and I got to share ideas, opinions, and grow from these experiences.

Overall, OSA has been and will be the best summer program. While being there to study, I also got to learn more practical and useful skills like teamwork & independence. It gave me enough freedom to not only study and learn about my course but also allowed me to explore the town and create lasting bonds.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I had fainted in a restaurant most likely due to a heat stroke. My friends and activity coordinators had took care and brought me to get some sugary snacks before returning to our dorms. After returning they had called the matron to make sure I was alright. I honestly would not have recovered so quickly without their help.
Pros
  • independence
  • freedom
  • friendship
Cons
  • being away from family
  • costly

Summer School & Internship Experience

I attended Oxford Scholastica Summer School 2024 on the "Experience Medicine" Course as well as a recent Medicine Internship, and I had such an amazing time! I would 100% recommend this to everyone, as you are guaranteed to learn a lot, about medicine, culture, and independence.

Firstly, I learned a lot in my classes. The tutor was extremely kind and explained all the knowledge and concepts in a way where there was an engaging learning environment. I was able to do some hands-on learning, stay engaged, learn a lot of specialized information about Medicine, and even experience how medical workers work in a class where we went to a real hospital with real patients! I also really enjoyed the self-study tasks, they challenged me not only on my knowledge but also on my creativity in finding creative solutions for certain problems. I was also able to improve myself as a learner, thanks to various workshops we had about people, learning, and debate. I also learned how to write a professional article in the internship, which gave me a lot of important skills to use later down the line.

Secondly, the experience also taught me how to live independently, and bond with those around me. I had some time to roam around the city as well as bond with the other students in my house. This taught me to rely on myself with tasks such as buying certain things I may need and managing money, as well as socializing with new people. I was able to make a lot of friends from both the internship and summer school that I still have, and I learned to motivate and depend on myself for my studies and also for general day-to-day life. There was an evening party on a yacht where we all bonded and had fun together! These skills will help me with living alone or with a roommate in college later and gives me a great idea of that experience.

I also got to learn a lot about the city of Oxford and the UK in general, due to the visits we made to various locations. As linked in the pictures below, I visited the city and various different places such as Windsor Castle. I learned a lot about the history and culture of the city, which made me only love the city more. It also gave me a sense of open learning as every place we visited had so much to do and see, and we were able to check out whatever we were interested in. It was a great balance that was provided between studying and enjoying our course.

I also took a medical internship at Oxford Scholastica. I had to learn about breast cancer and research how modern AI can play a role in the detection and situation of breast cancer. I worked with a team of three other members, mainly helping with deciding our next course of action, to write an academic article that has the chance to get published in the OxJournal Public Library. I was able to learn to to write professionally, with a formal and academic format and language, as well as writing in-text citations and Harvard style bibliographies, and even got the article published at Oxjournal.

Overall, this has been the been summer program I have ever had! I am 100% coming back the following year, and I am even bringing my friend along with me! If you are looking for a summer experience where you dive deep into a subject of your choice, learn about the college experience, and explore the unique city of Oxford as well as the special sights, then Oxford Scholastica is right for you!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
One surprising thing was definitely the workshops that we could attend, which taught us skills such as active thinking and communications, which can greatly inspire you. These workshops allowed the experience at Oxford Scholastica to not only immerse me in knowledge of my course (which was Medicine) but also skills that can help me in my education and life. It consisted of various activity and interaction with the people which made all the sessions enjoyable and engaging.
Pros
  • Deep & Immersive Course Content
  • Wide Variety of Activities
  • Professional Experiences
Cons
  • High Cost

The 2 weeks of my life which became the best 2 weeks of my life

Oxford scholastica gave me the most memorable , exciting and educational 2 weeks of my life ...(I regret not staying there for 4 weeks ) . Scholatica doesn’t only broaden your knowledge on your subject but helps you discover so many talents in you which even you yourself didn’t know of.The quality of education you receive here .. helps you in innumerable ways even in your own country but but but ...scholatica is not only about education ...I did so many fun activities here ...like punting , the Scottish dance , international ball to name a few . I made friends for a lifetime and I thank scholatica from the bottom of my heart ... I am still in touch with the wonderful activity coordinators Omar and tia they were my support system back in oxford . I would recommend this Summer school to everyone .ITS A MUST. And would love to visit it again myself . All this was possible thanks to the wonderful , encouraging and understanding staff of scholatica !

What would you improve about this program?
I am not just saying this for the sake of saying it but there’s nothing one can really improve . When I say ITS PERFECT I mean it . Though I would love if scholatica could have people over the age of 18 also due to my own selfish reasons (I would love to come back again and again )

Oxford 2019

The most valuable experience I’ve ever had in a multitude of ways. The academic side was fascinating and stimulating, not only I n terms of content, but it also gave me so much more confidence, in a classroom setting that has definitely helped when going back to school since. I made friends from all over the world and remain in touch with them through social media, which is such a rare occurrence at such a young age, Also we took part in so many fun activities, including the famous oxford punting! (Which was so much harder than it looks, but completely hilarious and one of my favourite memories to date). The beautiful city of Oxford combined with the awesome people and OSA team serves for a guaranteed unforgettable experience.

Best summer school!

I’ve had the greatest experience during the summer school. I had the chance to meet new people from all over the world who have the same aspirations as me. It made me feel even more passionate about what I want to study in the future. Not only the learning, we got to visit really cool places and do so many fun activities. The staff are so friendly and welcoming as well. When I signed up for the summer school I was really nervous and not sure of how it’s going to be like but from the first day I started I felt so welcomed. I honestly experienced so many things that I would’ve never done on my own. :)

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Enjoy every moment of it because it goes by fast!

Hands-down a top tier programme!

I attended LSA just before my final year of school, with A levels and university applications ahead of me. The masterclasses, mentors’ advice, and the Young Lawyer’s course (obviously), made me so much more confident about the application process and zeroing in on my decision to do law. I wouldn’t trade my time at LSA for anything, especially because of the strong friendships I formed while there and the support they’ve given me. The Scholastica family really is one you’d like to keep around. I would definitely, a thousand percent, recommend this course!

What would you improve about this program?
I would increase the total tutorial/lesson hours of the course to orient it slightly more towards academics.

This summer school is the best i’ve ever been to ! You get to meet a lot of people from all around the world, you get to learn a specific subject, and it’s taught to you by some amazing teachers. And the staff is really nice too. But you also get to do some fun activities in your free time or in the evening like punting and even going ice cream tasting ! All in all, Oxford scholastica was the best two weeks of my life and I truly recommend it to anyone looking for a 2 or 4 week summer school. Truely amazing experience !!!
