A New and Unfamiliar Beginning

My name is Shannon, & I am here to share a little about why I am so proud and grateful for my teaching abroad experience in Costa Rica. Firstly, the Travelbud team genuinely made my experience so much better with their encouragement, support, and enthusiasm. I was very nervous when I started, but they made sure I never felt alone. It's a crazy (and scary!!!) change to move away from home, but equally so rewarding and amazing. This experience is 1 of a kind and I wouldn't trade it for the world..

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Honestly, it was terrifying to leave the comforts I had at home for an extremely different lifestyle and experience. My Spanish level was beginner, and I had no real introductions to the people in my program prior to leaving for my trip. I felt very alone, scared, and nervous to have to make new friends and potentially "embarrass" myself in the process. However, I quickly found that I wasn't the only person feeling this way. I was able to overcome because I realized that, for the most part, the people who had chosen to do this experience like me had at least one thing in common: the desire to learn and grow. I (uncomfortably) put myself out there and was rewarded by doing so. Everyone was both nervous and excited. My small group became fast friends, and we all supported each other along the way, differences and all. You must have an open mind and heart to succeed on this journey. It is not always easy, but very worth it.
Pros
  • building your communication skills
  • making new friends and connections
  • beautiful nature
Cons
  • culture shock
  • feeling stagnant/stuck
  • feeling lonely/missing material comforts

Dear Shannon,

Your story is truly inspiring! We're absolutely beaming reading about your incredible teaching adventure in Costa Rica. It takes so much courage to step outside your comfort zone and embark on such a life-changing journey, and we're so proud of you for doing it!

It's fantastic to hear that the Travelbud team was able to provide you with the encouragement, support, and enthusiasm you needed. We understand how nerve-wracking it can be to move to a new country, especially with a beginner level of Spanish and without knowing anyone. You perfectly captured the feeling of that "crazy (and scary!!!) change," but also the incredible reward that comes with it.

Your honesty about the most nerve-racking moment, leaving your familiar comforts, really resonated with us. It's so relatable! And your description of how you overcame it – realizing you weren't alone, putting yourself out there, and finding common ground with your fellow teachers – is truly heartwarming. It’s wonderful that you found a supportive group of fast friends.

You've highlighted the beautiful balance of challenges and rewards perfectly. Culture shock and feelings of loneliness are real, but you've also shown how they can be outweighed by the incredible pros: building communication skills, making lifelong connections, and experiencing the beauty of nature. We love that you emphasized the importance of having an open mind and heart – that's truly the key to a successful journey!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us, Shannon. Your words are incredibly encouraging for anyone considering teaching abroad. We're thrilled that you wouldn't trade this experience for the world, and we wish you all the best in your future adventures!

Keep shining!

Warmly,
Charlotte and the TravelBud Team

Unforgettable Experience

I can say with confidence that this has been the most rewarding and exciting experience I have had. TravelBud made the process of moving to a new country a hassle free experience. I was put into a TEFL program in Costa Rica where met lifelong friends and build a network in a new country. We had plenty of free time to explore and enjoy local activities. My time in the TEFL program was truly such a memorable and fun time and I will always remember it fondly. Going through TravelBud, I felt a peace of mind and overall excitement for the journey that was ahead. I highly recommend them :)

Pros
  • exposure to a new culture
  • excursions to different parts of the country

Great experience in a wonderful part of the world!

I didn't know what to expect when uprooting my life to move to Costa Rica and embarking on this training. I was so lucky to have such an amazing group of fellow teachers around me including an utterly sensational and supportive course leader, Carla, who always kept the course fun and light while also putting my skills and experience to use and giving me responsibilities in the classroom.

I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a new challenge. I came here to deliberately make life more challenging for myself, leave my cushy life back in England, and discover who I was deep down in this brave new world.

Already I can feel I have changed so much and, come what may, I will never regret the courage it took to boldly go into the unknown. The sentiment as to why I left and the opportunities this course has provided me can be summarised in a poem that is close to my heart:

'I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking.'

All in all - 10/10 would highly recommend.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Teaching in front of 6 year olds who speak zero English! I have been teaching for 5 years and I have never had to teach students who spoke zero English and students so young. This was such a valuable experience as it taught me how much of teaching and communication in the classroom is non-verbal or can be done with minimal speaking. These principles can be applied to all areas of my pedagogy.
Pros
  • Unbelievably beautiful exposure to nature (I see parrots, monkeys, iguanas, and many more on my walk to work each day!)
  • I have developed my teaching skillsets further (even after my teaching degree and years of experience teaching English literature) and challenged me to develop new teaching skillsets in EAL
  • Doing the course has provided me with a close group of friends as a support network out in CR (where I knew no one previously)
Cons
  • I had expected to teach in person some different ages/abilities than very young children (ages 6 - 10 and beginners) - though some variety of ages and abilities was found when teaching online
  • I was lucky to get a room to myself as I was the only man on the course - but I can imagine it would have been hard to stay in a hostel sharing a room with someone I didnt get on with for a month. Thankfully, this did not happen on our course.
  • Sharing the San Ramon hostel with 3-4 permanent residents who were difficult at times. They resented having us there and even shouted at us at times for perceived infractions. This got really annoying and we didnt know they would be there.

Go for it!

I found this program back in 2022.. I was scheduled to leave in the summer of 2023. Life happened thus I ended up going in 2024. The inquiry was completely smooth from the start of it all to arriving in Costa Rica! It was a great experience to learn about myself. It was very humbling and pushed me to develop my Spanish. If you are looking to take sometime away from the hustle and bustle I recommend teaching abroad. I would recommend Costa Rica to anyone looking to travel and live somewhere for a bit and network/connect with ticos!

What would you improve about this program?
At least one meal should be included a day for the price. (i.e. lunch)
Pros
  • New scenery
  • Meet new people
  • Develop your spanish
Cons
  • Costa Rica is expensive for what we are paid
  • There should new activities the first week than the recycled ones
  • Meals are not included

Costa Rica-TravelBud

Coordinating my trip with TravelBud was an easy and smooth process. From my very first inquiry back in 2019 to actually making it to Costa Rica in 2022. There was a lot that happened globally and they did a great job navigating the steps. I was able to have all the documents needed for my arrival in San Jose. Also, being able to have support through the TESOL course to receiving my job placement. The transition was easy to navigate. The team was always there for support and guidance while I was living in Costa Rica.

What a way to learn yourself in the most accepting place of peace

I think I had the right idea coming here with little to no expectations. I did not realize how much pressure we had in the States to be or not to be many things on a daily basis. I was fueled by appreciation from the start based on overcoming so many odds as a woman of color doing something this crazy, like moving to another country. I chose Costa Rica based on the support from Travel Bud from the very beginning. I want to take this moment to recognize Kim as a huge part of why I continue to let the Pura Vida lifestyle guide me as I learn myself in the most accepting country of inner peace. Another shout out to Adam for his vulnerability in his journey allowing me to know at that time of my life when I needed clarity, the high mountains on this island would give me the perfect view to do so. I can not tell you all of these perfect things that are amongst the forests' green trees and clear waters, the peculiar creatures that you MUST learn share a space with and the amount of rice and beans you will eat, because sometimes it has not been perfect at all. However every day that I wake up in this small town I feel the spirit of the simple life I was told about and no it is not always ideal to not have one-day Amazon shipping for hair products or CHIPOTLEEE, God do I miss those things, BUT I have never been able to understand myself more than I have all my life. From the small precious moments tucked away in Pura Vida in the classrooms to the solitude with the waves, to the bright smiles of women in the local sodas, or the gentlemen that let you cross the road in these crazy streets or the giggles from your little students when you pronounce some Spanish wrong. It really has brought out the best versions of myself and for that, I get the chance to say I know how to live in gratitude every day because of this experience. If you don't believe me, you'll just honestly have to take a chance and come see for yourself. I promise the country won't disappoint you.

Pros
  • learning the langauge
  • networking
  • new hobbies
Cons
  • school options limited
  • communication
  • limited housing options

Hi Keey,
Your heartfelt review has left us deeply touched and immensely grateful for sharing your Pura Vida experience with us. We are thrilled to hear that your decision to embark on this adventure has brought you closer to understanding yourself and appreciating the simple joys of life.
Your recognition of Kim and Adam's contributions to your journey is truly heartwarming. We are honored to have them as part of our team and your experience and sharing this with us continues to motivate the team to push and make sure all our travelers have these experiences.

We understand that your experience in Costa Rica wasn't entirely perfect. There have been challenges and you have embraced and adapted and that is important in any journey. You pushed yourself to understand working in a multi-cultural working environment and that is something to be proud of. While there also may be moments of longing for familiar comforts like Amazon shipping and Chipotle, the irreplaceable experiences you've gained far outweigh any temporary inconveniences. Your words beautifully capture the essence of Pura Vida – the appreciation for the simple things, the connection with nature, and the warmth of the Costa Rican people. Thank you for choosing Travel Bud as your partner in this journey of self-discovery. Your review serves as a testament to the profound impact that immersing oneself in a new culture and embracing its unique way of life can have. We are humbled to have played a role in this enriching experience.
As you continue to navigate the Pura Vida path, we encourage you to hold onto the lessons learned and the connections made. May your next journey be filled with continued growth, gratitude, and Pura Vida!

Best regards,
The Travelbud Team

Great and Helpful Program and Coordinators

I am so glad I found this program! They helped me to finally move abroad and become an English teacher! They helped guide me through the process and matched me with the program I did once I arrived to Costa Rica. The help Saskia provided was amazing, through and I always felt like I had someone in my corner who was looking out for me. She is responsive, helpful and genuinely wanted to help make my transition and time in Costa Rica the best they could be! I think the program is great because they have so many resources and programs all over the world so you really have a lot of options for where you want to go! I also love that after my first year teaching, I have the support of the program for a lifetime in many different countries all over the world!!

Pros
  • Placement with a program that gives you the TESOL/TEFL.
  • Support even after you have been placed.

Costa Rica - GoOverseas Experience

This was my first time traveling internationally and it was, without a doubt, a life changing experience. With the help from the staff of GoOverseas and the in-country partner, the transition into living overseas was smooth, organized, and supported every step of the way. I am a solo traveler, but being a part of this program gave me a sense of community from the very beginning of my journey. During the first month in the program, I had the opportunity to go on adventurous, yet affordable excursions, find work, and build a support system made of friendships that I will have for a lifetime. Although I wish my work pay was a little higher, I now have a job that allows me to travel internationally, and nothing is more exhilarating than the sense of freedom you receive from that. My job allows me to create my own work schedule and I can work as much or as little as I desire. I have never been happier.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
