Fantastic Experience with Umoja Foundation Group

I have had the best two, three weeks best of my life. The Umoja Foundation Group staff made me feel like part of the team. On my project I got to meet some of inspirational people, traveled the rural most community of Kenya and improve my communication skills.
I would recommend Umoja Foundation Group in Kenya to all my friends and am thinking doing another project next year. I have not got a negative thing to say a bout my experience and I'm sad to be leaving. The project exceeded all my expectations. At the weekends we got to travel many places and i have made memories i will never forget.
Its fun project in a great location with lots to do outside the project activities if you want to. I wanted to visit Kenya since my teenage years. As a keen photographer of elephant i also wanted the opportunity to photograph them in the wild and see them roaming freely i did that during the safari experience to Maasai Mara safari park.
In the morning i helped out the local team with home duties but big for the enjoyable activity was afternoon visit the local school. The kids so gorgeous, with friendly, open and curious smiles.
Everyone on the project was so accommodating and friendly and felt very well taken care .Mercy's food was absolutely delicious and i don't think there was single dish that i didn't love. Many provided ample entertainment! Mike was also kind enough to take me on an excursion to safari.
All in all it was unforgettable experience and leave feeling that i have contributed to the great work that Umoja Foundation Group does. I will definitely be back

Great experience

I've always wanted to get out of my comfort zone and Umoja Foundation Group made it easy for me to not only learn so much about myself, and again a new perspective on life but also feel 100% comfortable, especially being on the other side of the word. My friendships with other volunteers, staff and local community members are unlike any other. Kenya will forever hold a special place in my heart, Umoja Foundation Group made this one-of-a-kind experience so incredible. I loved that I was able to be part of the local communities, and experience Kenya in such a unique way and I know this won't be my last Umoja Foundation Group volunteer work trip.

"I enjoyed my stay"

I really enjoyed my volunteer work at Umoja Foundation Group on child care program in Matunda Kenya.Everyone, volunteers and locals alike, were highly friendly and many many locals would attempt to stop on the street to chat with you, anyone you meet says "habari mzungu" sounds so funny. The accommodation was basic but suitable.Everyone had their own bed and the food each time was delicious. The tap water was not suitable to drink, which meant that you spend some money on bottle water. The project itself was enlightening, and very worthwhile, sometimes the work could be hard with the children as you would see issues that would be very unlikely to rise in your home country Denmark but the people and staff mad everything worthwhile. The weekends were packed of tourist safari trips, and it was very interesting to see the difference between locals Kenya and tourist Kenya.Generally I enjoyed my project and would volunteer with Umoja Foundation Group again in a heartbeat. The staff at Umoja Foundation Group especially Michael, was very helpful in making the arrangements.

What was your funniest moment?
Walking a round the villages and locals would want to chat and says habari mzungu it was so funny and enjoyable. I like it.
Pros
  • Children supported basic needs
  • Introduce kitchen gardens for nutrition
  • Fees to few bright children
Cons
  • Disadvantaged children needs more support

I would recommend Umoja Foundation Group Kenya to anyone

Umoja Foundation Group offers a fantastic opportunity to both people who are looking to make a difference in their own way,but also to people who want to progress further into their chosen fields of study and have the opportunity to practically implement this in field.I was in Kenya with Umoja Foundation Group for there months and working within the rural education development program there has been absolute eye opener and one which has allowed me to experience many things. From the moment I arrived in Kenya I was taken away the beauty of our surroundings, the green maize plantation surrounding the back of the home and our views out over the hills and the surrounding areas.Living with a local community has also been a a real eye opener, seeing their way of life and how they adapted to live this paradise has been amazing -specially the way they allowed is to fit into their village and are willing to help us with anything we may need.I have genuinely enjoyed every day of my stay there. The school staff are also extremely fun to work with and mixture of people means that there is plenty to learn and never a boring moment. I would recommend Umoja Foundation Group in Kenya to anyone, but be prepared for basic living standards!this is genuinely not a problem and I believe it has added my experience there-but being a few luxuries from home with you!!ENJOY!!!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
When you have the capacity please help those in need
Pros
  • Provided education support
  • Helped marginalised children and families.
  • Nutritional support to the disadvantaged.
Cons

Something life changing experience in Kenya

I was nervous before I came to Kenya.Am now excited to say I experienced something life changing in Kenya.I joined Umoja Foundation Group and I love every bit of my trip.Working in school and hospital allowed me glimpse into education and medical systems and have me an opportunity to learn.I learned sometimes to be helpful,I had to brave and ask where I'd be most useful, sometimes doing little things meant the most to those around me-like calming a crying child to allow the nurses to be able to finish pressing work,or having the patience with a child to sit and help them finish their food for the first time.I was in the public hospital emergency room, where I was able to see a C-section as well us well as a live birth. This experience was crucial to my decision to continue studying medicine to higher levels. In Kenya ,I found incredible kindness everywhere I went.An incredible experience, and one that I will never forget.Thank you Michael at Umoja Foundation Group for organising my trip to Kenya.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I was served with ugali so delicious food it is Kenyan stable meal a mixture of flour and water to ball like served with vegetables, meat among others.
Pros
  • Support disadvantage children
  • Promote health
  • Promote education
Cons
  • Poor health facilities
  • Poor standards of school long distance
  • Sustainability
