AFS Spain High School Study Abroad

I studied abroad in order to be who I felt I was. To expand, my first few years of high school were rough; I was continuously boxed into playing a person and a role that I didn't identify with by the people I had grown up around. I was ready to break out and grow into a different person, but I could not do so by remaining in my home environment. So, instead, I left and went to study in Spain. Getting off the plane, I was instantly whisked away to orientation, where I was placed with a group of teenagers who were all just as scared and nervous as I was. Never before had I felt so comfortable. Other exchange students are some of the closest and easiest friends you could ever imagine to make - they are the only ones who fully understand and identify with the struggle of being immersed in a brand new culture, and that allows a connection that is both instant and intimate. Being in a new environment allowed me to act as the person I saw myself becoming, and the struggles that come with studying abroad and learning a new language built me into that person. My year with AFS, as a result, was the most formative of my life, and, no matter where you are, I highly recommend partaking in a study abroad experience.

Amazing country, people, and program!

There really are no words to describe the beauty of Norway and the kindness of the people there. This was an amazing experience and something that I would recommend to anyone thinking of going abroad. I was very fortunate to live with a welcoming and generous host family, but the Norwegian people in general are the nicest I've ever met. The year I was there happened to be one of the coldest and snowiest in a long time, so I had the chance to go on many "hyttetur", or basically cabin trips. Sledding, skiing (downhill and lots of cross country),and walking on frozen lakes are just a few things to do. Norwegians do like a party now and then, and will always test their English on you after a drink or two. There is no shortage of cold/snow, so if you like that you'll love Norway in the winter. Summertime has nice weather as well, with beautiful seasonal changes and lots of water activities. My host family had a cabin on an island where you could only travel to by boat it was very serene, pristine land with appreciative people who like to enjoy all that the country has to offer. This is a must visit country for anyone who likes snow, mountains, oceans, islands, fish, potatoes, hotdogs, waffles, sweets, kind people or really just for anyone. You won't regret it I promise!

True Tico's

The 4 weeks I spent at Costa Rica were amazing. I especially enjoyed my stay in palmares since we got to live with a host family. I felt like I had a new sister. We still keep in contact on facebook. The work we did was pretty hard especially at the volcano park on the 4th week but that just made it all the more rewarding. I really enjoyed my time with the volunteer group, as well as the individual time when we got to explore and work in Costa Rica. I hope that if you choose this particular experience you can also enjoy it as much as I did.

What would you improve about this program?
Make sure people have proper understanding of spanish before you release them alone on public transportation.

My travels in Italy

My host sisters and her friends had heard about this huge beach party with a famous DJ that was happening on a Saturday night. We spent two days going shopping for outfits, arranging transportation, gathering more people to come, and getting excited for the big night. Finally on the day of, we get to the beach, and the party in fact was grand. There were intense lights, beautiful lighted gazebos, loud music, and the stars were shining gorgeously. We danced and walked around for about 15 minutes and then the music randomly goes off. As everyone waits for the music to come back on with confused and angered looks, one of our friends comes over and informs us that we should leave; the DJ didn't have a license to play at the beach so the party was over. My host sisters and their friends let their tempers flare for a bit, and then we promptly gathered our stuff to headed back home. So much for a hyped up 15-minute beach party!

What would you improve about this program?
The communication within the program could be improved. For example, I wanted to request a change of host-family for health reasons and it was hard to reach AFS-Italy at first.

9 Cities in 13 days

While I told the Intercultura staff that I would be staying in Venice with my friend Electra for a week or so, I secretly took the train in the opposite direction to begin my backpacking trip where I stayed in hostels or on trains for the night and walked around ancient cities sightseeing for the next two weeks during the last month of my exchange and finished it off with the world Expo in Milan with my fellow exchange students.

What would you improve about this program?
More scholarship options or lower tuition fees/extended payment plans. The price is the ONLY thing stopping high schoolers from this life changing experience

A Summer in Thailand

My summer in Thailand was spent in school with my host sister and around Bangkok and the surrounding areas with my host family. A big part of what I saw outside of school was temples. My family, particularly my host mother was religious and we visited a multitude of different temples. From Wat Pra Kaew, a huge temple in Bangkok near the Grand Palace to a tiny shack of a temple on a hillside in the country. I very much enjoyed seeing the variety of places of worship and learning about and participating in different Buddhist traditions and practices.

What would you improve about this program?
For me, the biggest drawback to my experience was the fact that the school I went to was taught completely in Thai. I know from talking with other students that some schools are taught in English. This, combined with the fact that my school did not seriously try to teach my the language, as I was only there for the summer, made my time in school rather isolated. I think that if the program either placed students in English teaching schools or insisting that the students are taught Thai with the intention of fluency would make the program better.

Finding a new home

The cliché that study abroad is not a year in a life, but a life in a year holds so much truth. Between school work and family and friends and weekend travels my life in Spain was so exhaustingly wonderful. I was welcomed and loved by mere strangers. Like that time I didn't have exact change for the last bus fare back to my host family town. A complete stranger so me struggling and completely saved me that night. Or when 20 of us exchange students were waiting in a bus station and this old lady taught us tongue twisters. And all of those strangers on the street who took our pictures. I love all of my memories from Spain.
To begin with, AFS had the history and the reputation that encouraged my parents to let their 16 year old travel thousands of miles away for 10 months. AFS was there every step of the way with monthly orientation meetings where everything from homesickness to family troubles was discussed. The real reason I loved the orientations was the other exchange students. To be able to talk and make connections with people who understand exactly what you're going through is invaluable.
Take the leap. Becoming comfortable with uncertainty and saying yes will change everything. And AFS volunteers who have studied abroad themselves understand what it's like and they care so much.
I wouldn't trade the friendships, family, and new home I found while abroad for anything.

What would you improve about this program?
Coming back from Spain was a difficult adjustment and I wish there had been more structured support upon return to the U.S. Although I was prepared for reverse culture shock during the last couple AFS orientations in Spain, I think more support upon return would have helped me adjust back to my life.

Amazing Summer Experience

If you're thinking of going overseas during your high school career, but don't want to leave for an academic year, you should definitely consider doing the AFS summer language program. Easily the best experience of my life, in one of my favorite countries. I went to the south of France, and not only did my French drastically improve, but I had the best summer with some great international friends.

What would you improve about this program?
If I had to change one thing, it would be the overnight preparation session in America. For me, an overnight orientation wasn't very necessary; it could have been done in a day.

Un país muy lindo

This was the best experience of my life. I loved going to school even if it was from 7am to 4:30 pm almost everyday. My host family and compañeros were the best and everyone I met was very helpful and kind. They tolerated my inability to speak Spanish and included me during recess and family events all the time. The social scene during my trip was a little dull but I was only there for 6 weeks and it was in the middle of their exam schedule at school so they did not have much time to have fun. Plus, school was very long. I love Costa Rican food too. It's muy rico. Life is completely pura vida. I wish I'd done a year exchange!!

What would you improve about this program?
The one thing I didn't like other than not being able to change my program to a year was the 5 day AFS trip I had to go on. It happened the second week I was there so I missed school after finally getting used to it. It also halted the language learning process because I was with my other AFSers. I am not sure if it was mandatory, but while it was mostly fun, I would have preferred to be with my host family and going to school. One problem was that when they us back in our host town, they didn't let our host families know so we were stuck for 30 minutes until our host parents came to get us.

AFS France

If you're considering it, do it. You won't regret it! I went with minimal French skills and returned more or less fluent. AFS has great support volunteers who were always available whenever assistance was required. I had an incredible experience with my host family and at school; I learned a lot about myself. Words cannot do it justice: you will have the experience of a lifetime!
