First time study abroad student

I enjoyed the program a lot it was a lot of fun and the professors make the program. Riding was a lot of fun and I did learn a lot. I made friends of this trip for another university and it was pretty awesome. The horses that are used in the program are very much suited to the rider placed with that horse. The organization was really go they kept us busty and encouraged us to travel on our free time. The free weekend we were given some of us went to London and Ireland. If I could do it all over again I would not second guess this trip. I am so happy that I made the choice to study abroad.

What would you improve about this program?
The living arrangements could have been a little bit better. But they living conditions were not bad.

Adelante Equine Study Abroad at Oatridge College

This is a very good study abroad program. All of the staff at the college are super friendly and want to make it the best experience possible. The itinerary was structured enough to keep the days filled, while still leaving plenty of time in the evenings and on off days to experience the surrounding areas. The facilities are very clean and well-kept, with only the beds being a little hard. It is important to remember that with any study abroad experience the food will be different, the housing will be different, the transportation and places to go will be different. Just don't expect everything to be the same as it is at home. Embrace the new culture.

Summer to Remember

I really enjoyed my time studying here in Scotland. I have met a lot of great people and have seen amazing things in Scotland and all over Europe. I also like being able to ride almost everyday. There is a great variety of horses and the barn has a wonderful atmosphere. The classes were great because I learned a lot while still having enough free time to see Scotland and adventure. I highly recommend trying to travel anywhere you can while you are here, and before/ after the program!

What would you improve about this program?
Only improvement would be changing the dorms that the study abroad students are in, and making it easier to get food on the weekend.

Adelante Equine Program

Overall, I had an amazing time on this trip. The staff here was extremely welcoming and helpful, and always made sure we had someone available to help us if needed. I do wish that the riding was a bit more rigorous, although I know it's hard to get super deep into riding in only a 4-week program. I also found the classes to be extremely easy, and think that in the future they could be a bit more challenging for students. My favorite part about this trip was really being able to submerge myself into the Scottish culture. I learned so much just from touring castles, palaces, or just walking the streets of Edinburgh and talking to locals. At the end of the day, those amazing experiences are the ones I will remember and carry with me wherever I go.

What would you improve about this program?
I would love to see the riding be a bit more challenging. I understand that riders come from all different starting levels, however for the upper level groups, I would love to see them be able to do more things such as jumping more quickly.

:-)

Studying abroad at Oatridge College was amazing. The staff was extremely friendly and offered a lot of transportation and help when we wanted it. We had lots of free time to go out and explore and it was easy to do so. We rode up to 4 times a week and had a different horse almost every time. I hadn't formally jumped before I came here and now I feel comfortable jumping on my own. Highly recommend!!!

Adelante-Scotland Equine Study Abroad

The program overall was very good. The classwork was not hard and was very fair and interesting. Not coming from a jumping background, learning the basics of jumping was very entertaining and fun. The horses are all well mannered and the staff is very friendly! Definitely recommend! There is plenty of time to explore Scotland and pretty much do whatever you want. The staff is very open to making us happy and doing things people are actually interested in doing, which was really appreciated.

What would you improve about this program?
Housing was a little rough, mostly the rooms. With that being said, the description most of us were given about the housing before coming to Oatridge made it sound like we were staying in a brand new dorm with lots of space. I didn't mind our accommodations I just would have preferred to have been told accordingly so I knew what to expect.

Response from Adelante Abroad

Thank you so much, Kelsey for the solid review with good details. The housing is always in on-campus dorms in this program, but not always in the same on-campus dorm! Each student ALWAYS has their own room, too, no double bunking. The dorms for this summer had renovated bathrooms and bedrooms (see the photos we have added to the Equine Summer Program listing here), and definitely a smaller common area than in past dorms. We apologize for not making it clearer we do change dorms each summer - based on what is available around the Scottish students housing - to ensure that all 16 of our Equine students live together in the same dorm. It is such good news to hear that you learned jumping....and in Scotland! Please stay in touch. Team Adelante

Wonderful and Knowledgeable Experience

I really enjoyed my experience at this program. I enjoyed the classes we took, as well as the horseback riding lessons, and thought that the professors and instructors were very kind, caring, and helpful. As an Equine Science major, this program really added to my learning and experiences. I also liked learning about the culture in Scotland. I learned a lot about the culture through the trips we took, and also really liked going on horse related trips, such as to the Perth Races.

Scotland Equine Study Abroad

This study abroad experience was one of a kind! The opportunity to study in a foreign country, both traditionally in the classroom and also in the arena was really unique. I enjoyed both of the courses offered, and really enjoyed applying what we learned in the classroom in a hands on setting in the barn as well. The instructors are very well educated in their fields and have a lot to teach, but are also very interested in learning about different perspectives that come from being a part of the equine industry in another country. The riding instructors are amazing! I thoroughly enjoyed every riding lesson and every horse that I rode. The instructors are there to make you a better rider, but are also very encouraging as well. The equestrian facilities are really impressive and there is always something happening there to see on the weekends. The residential accommodations are great for the amount of time that you are spending there. The planned day trips are really well done and very cool! And there is an ample amount of free time where several groups went into Edinburgh or on horse treks in the area. There is a lot to experience and learn from this program, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves horses, riding, or is interested in an equine career!

What would you improve about this program?
For the equine fitness class, there was a significant amount of outside work required, but it was fairly redundant in my opinion. I would recommend reducing the number of outcomes required from the students. I would also say that another day of riding during the first week would be appreciated.
