120 Hours - Teaching Young Learners

I've heard about the program through a friend, I did research on the online programs and decided on Toronto University. Started in May, completed in October.
In the 100 hour core curriculum first couple of units were boring - necessary, but boring. After completing 100 hours, I got the chance to learn about the actual reason I enrolled. Teaching Abroad, and Teaching Young Learners. +20 hours specialization modules dd not took 20 hours to complete. There were 3 lessons in Teaching Abroad, and 10 in Teaching Young Learners. In all honesty I did not understand why they call it 120 hours.
Lessons are overall interesting and educational as well as fun and interactive.
Reflection journals can be frustrating at first but if you do the readings listed in the beginning of each lesson, you can get the hang of it. They are important to self check your progress.
Brochure is misleading. It says there are many job opportunities in Europe, which we can apply through Teachaway, I've been checking jobs since July and did not find a single TEFL job available in Europe. I will find a suitable job for me but it is not going to happen via Teachaway.

To Elspeth, Kevin, and Shannon,
Thank you! You were always available to answer my questions. I appreciate your solution oriented attitude.

What would you improve about this program?
Feedback more.
Give more reading options.
Final assessment should be a demo lesson.
Enlarging job opportunities through Europe.
Find a solution for the delay in receiving the certificates.

Response from Teach Away

Hi Imren,

Congratulations again on completing the course! We are pleased that you were able to move through the course quickly and that you found it interesting and educational.

I myself taught in Europe so I am pleased to hear that's where you are looking to teach. I like to advise students that hiring practices are different in different places so you'll find that openings in Europe will appear less frequently on most job boards. Moreover, you may be competing with native and near-native English speakers from Europe. But landing a job there is absolutely possible!

We encourage our graduates to begin their job search with Teach Away, but with this TEFL certificate, you can apply to jobs anywhere and through any company!

Our focus is to provide TEFL training for its students and the OISE TEFL team does not recruit for teaching positions, but we can certainly be a resource when beginning your job search.

We hope that helps to broaden your search and allow you to find those positions in Europe. And we look forward to being in touch soon to help you get started!

Best,
Elspeth

Tefl online course review

Overall I really enjoyed this course. You definitely have to be a self starter as with any online learning material. The course went into alot more depth in certain areas than I would have ever considered myself. I appreciate the psychology this course follows - catering to individual needs and personalities, different generations of students etc. Its a very model approach by following this mentality, as well as touching on diversity im tje classroom. The support was great when I needed help too. I gave an 8 for the rating about helping to find a job only because I havent looked at that route yet - just trying online teaching for now while traveling. :) quite possible I'll use this in the future! Online teaching is definitely more restricted for flexibility and content, however theres still so much I can apply and practice from this course, before I move on to possibly teaching in q classroom. Appreciate all the support from staff and truly enjoyed this TEFL course.

What would you improve about this program?
I cant think of anything off hand. It fulfilled what o was looking for and provided alot of materials and resources I can use in the future.

Great courses and convenient

I researched a number of courses before deciding on OISE. Major deciding factors was it was 1. coming from a University recognized everywhere, 2. Convenience (I work full time so distance learning method was perfect, 3. Price and affordability. The course is designed in manageable chunks so its easily digestible. Knowledge checks and assignments were frequent and the level of difficulty was just right!

Excellent TEFL Course with Global Recognition

I have completed the 150 hour OISE TEFL program in September 2018. This program is comprehensive and valuable for all English language teachers. It includes teaching theories and practical experience sharing from professors, and expertises.
I chose this program because the program is worldwide recognition by University of Toronto. Also, I really enjoy this online program anywhere and anytime. After completed this program, I enriched my knowledge and skills of teaching English abroad.

What would you improve about this program?
This program can be improved by introducing a TEFL diploma course for teachers who need continuing professional development.

Not difficult, but SO SLOW

If you are in a rush and need things done very quickly, do not rely on University of Toronto.

While doing this course, you are forbidden from even viewing the content of any lesson until you have completed every lesson before it. And (almost) every unit is capped with a submission of reflection journals that need to be manually 100% accepted by someone, somewhere, and you can't continue the course (or even try to write the test for that unit) until that is done. Which can take 1-2 days. You also never get any feedback on the quality or content of your reflective journals, despite the course having a whole unit talking about the usefulness of feedback and good ways to give useful feedback on a students work.

After completing this course, I was made to wait a full 5 weeks before receiving a scanned copy of my certificate, and I still haven't received the physical copy now, more than a week since I got the scanned copy, and it should normally take 2 or 3 days for how relatively short of a distance away I am. And this is despite me asking them multiple times to send it to me by the fastest means possible, even saying to do it at my own expense!

With that out of the way, the content itself seems fairly straightforward. The quizzes and unit tests weren't especially difficult.

What would you improve about this program?
- Give at least a tiny bit of feedback on submitted work
- Allow students to at least take the unit test while waiting for the reflection journals to be accepted (if not also allowing them to start studying the next unit)
- Have some sort of back-up for the single person that is currently the only one allowed to sign and seal the certificates, in case they suddenly die or quit or something. No company should allow itself to have such a critical single point of failure
- At least allow the option for express shipping of the certificate, even if you charge the students who opt-in for it.

Response from Teach Away

Hi John,

It was lovely speaking with you again today. As discussed, the design of the course is such that students must complete each unit successfully before progressing to future units. This ensures that you have fully grasped the material before building on it with future lessons. The Reflection Journals are also an important part of the course as it is a chance to reflect on what you've learned and for a real person (our Grading Assistants) to review your understanding. It is often an opportunity for feedback as well, though students who are successful in their journals may receive less feedback, as was true in your case.

As we discussed last month, at the time of your course completion, a medical emergency that meant our Executive Director was unable to sign the certificates for some time. I do apologize that these unfortunate circumstances lead to an unusual delay in your receipt of the physical certificate, though I was pleased to be able to send you your scanned certificate within 2 weeks of completion in spite of this.

We do send all certificates via standard mail and mailing time may vary. In our previous conversation, we opted for standard mail due to your proximity to Toronto, but I hope future students do know that a courier can be arranged upon request in similar circumstances. I was very glad to hear that you have since received your certificate and begun your visa application.

I do wish you the best on your teaching adventure in China and please feel free to get back in touch with me should you require any further assistance.

Best,
Elspeth

Great!

The material was great overall. There was a lot of repetition, which can be tedious at times, but was ultimately good for knowledge retention. There were some minor problems with the specialization courses, such as wrong files being attached to a slide (I got a document for Arabic speakers when I was studying for Chinese speakers), but they did not interfere with the learning process.
The staff really helped in solving tech issues. When I had problems finishing the course due to personal reasons, they were helpful in granting me an extension.
The scan of the certificate was on time.
I took the program to learn more about teaching, so I never quite put much hope in the Teach Away job board. As it is, I will be getting a job, but not through TeachAway. It may be more helpful for others, but certainly not for me. (My nationality has to be taken into account as well.)

What would you improve about this program?
I can't really add much to the course, but I would suggest running through the material with a fine-toothed comb to ensure the documents are placed correctly and to address smaller tech issues.
One thing I would really love is integrating the option to courier the certificate. It was difficult for me as the recipient to arrange a courier, though the staff, to their credit, made every effort to help me do so. Having an option for the recipient to pay the university staff to send the certificate via courier would greatly ease the process for all involved.

A To-The-Point Course

This is a course that set you up step by step, a streamline starting from 101 and leading to exactly what it takes to be a TEFL teacher, not matter what your major is in university, even to those that English is L2. If you study hard and seriously enough, you will be a great TEFL teacher. As matter of fact, I am quite unique example because I took the course NOT TO TEACH ENGLISH, but to teach Mandarin. Still theories, skills and techniques presented by the course are very useful in helping me to be a good Mandarin (should I say TMFL?) teacher.

What would you improve about this program?
Try to provide a big range simple and useful various activities, directly or indirectly related to the classroom teaching so as teachers will have a "magic hat" to improve classroom atmosphere or, just simply kill the extra time in the classroom. Like a lot of tricks for Plan B.

I was blown away

I had spent about 6 months doing extensive research about which TEFL program would be the best choice for me before deciding to choose this program offered by the University of Toronto. I'd heard excellent things about this university and actually had had a few friends attend, so I decided to join them (what really hooked me is that there a special going on at the time that decreased the enrollment fee $100, so as soon as I saw that, I knew I had to sign up immediately). After having signed up, I began my classes that same day. I would study day and night, writing down everything I thought was important and that I could use in the future. This program is tough, but you will learn so much more than you would have ever thought. You'll learn about different learning acquisition theories, different learning styles, how to teach different age groups, and even the differences between teaching boys and girls. This program is worth the time, money, and effort. Also, upon completion, you'll receive a link to make an account with www.teachaway.com that allows you to search for all sorts of international job opportunities for TEFL. Don't wait! Sign up and get started! If you aren't looking to move abroad, there are still many opportunities to work at local languages centers or work online as well.
