About Program

As a volunteer summer English camp counselor, you’ll spend your days interacting with Italian youth between 7 and 17 in a laid-back and casual setting. The main objective is to have fun and help campers gain confidence in English speaking and listening. This can happen through English games, drama, conversation, or in some cases just spending time together. A general schedule structure will be provided, but you’ll have the chance to draw on your own creativity as well.

After the program, you can stay in the country or elsewhere in Europe for several more weeks to travel to your heart's content!

Fun and Rewarding Way Experience

Through InterExchange, I was given the opportunity to live in Porto Sant'Elpidio, Italy for 4 weeks, while teaching English at two different locations of You Can Camp (one in Recananti and one in Macerata). Through this experience, I was able to really experience the culture of the people living there, build relationships with the children at the camps, and meet lots of peers from all over the world who were also working alongside me. The camp staff who was from Italy were so friendly and accommodating and really made us feel at home. I made so many wonderful friends on this trip, and I was also able to travel to different areas around Italy on weekends too, which was absolutely phenomenal. This program really helped me grow as a person, increased my cooperation and teamwork skills, and gave me an experience that I will remember for a lifetime.

So glad to hear you were able to have a true connection to Italian culture. That's a big part of what this program is about. Hope you're still keeping in touch with friends from your group! Thank you for your comments, Victoria!

Interexchange in Macerata, Italy

I taught for You Can Camp in Macerata, Italy. I spent four weeks teaching at a summer camp for elementary aged students and had the time of my life! I met new friends, experienced a new culture, and learned some of a new language. I’d never been immersed in a new culture in this way, where I had to learn basic phrases and conversational Italian so quickly. By the end of the trip, I was cooking my own Italian meals, speaking in full sentences, and I felt even more confident in my teaching practice. As a high school teacher, this was such a good way to learn how to differentiate for each student while also tracking myself as a teacher in many ways. This program encouraged new teaching ideas that I’ve brought home to Cincinnati Public Schools, and I believe it helped me to grow as both a person and a teacher. I would give anything to do this again, as it taught me more than most other experiences in my life and I truly enjoyed every single moment.

What would you improve about this program?
The only thing I can think of is to have more communication with coworkers and camp staff before arriving, but that’s it
