It was when I had the opportunity to bundle wood for the winter, paint a beautiful mural, play soccer with the little kids, dine on home cooked Sicilian meals with 30 others all gathered around the table, tour ancient cities, and watch the sunset sink back into the mountains that I learned the most about life and what it means to take chances. Sicily Community Service was the trip of a lifetime and an experience I will never forget. This trip changed me in so many positive ways. I met amazing people, saw incredible places, and got to take part in service that has forever impacted me. This trip gave me the opportunity to be a part of a new culture, it taught me to be flexible and patient, and it showed me how wonderful it is to open up your door to others in need. I am so grateful for the experiences I gained, the friendships I made, and that I was able to make an impact during my time in Sicily.

What would you improve about this program?

I would change the living spaces. For girls, especially, it was really difficult to share one little room with ten people. Because we were all living in the same space for 10 days, everyone started to get sick. It was also very difficult to shower and keep the room clean.

I would have also liked to tour a little more as it made the experience something I will never forget.

Lastly, for the price of the trip, in comparison to the People to People trip I went on, it would have been nice if the meals were all included, even on the days we toured.

This trip is a must do. This trip offers a view into how other people make a difference in their community and in other people's lives. You yourself with be part of their journey of helping out in the community and helping other people's lives. One of the best parts of the trip is climbing Mt. Etna. This is a thrilling experience like no other. Also on this trip you will see how beautiful Sicily really is. You will embark on your own journey of a Sicilian culture, Sicilian food, towns, and most of all a journey of meeting new people and making friendships that will last you your whole life. This trip is truly a life changing experience. When you get back from this trip you will want to help and do more in your community just like you did in Sicily. What would you improve about this program?

I would do more day trips in Sicily and explore more in Sicily. Also extend the trip and add a more variety of service opportunities.

I had the best time on the Sicily community service trip! My counselors were AMAZING and all of the friends I made on this trip and I talk everyday! To me, the best part of the trip was living with the family because they were so welcoming and loving. My favorite day trip was Mt. Etna, it was the most amazing feeling running down the mountain and seeing the whole island from the top!

What would you improve about this program?

The amount of service was more than I expected. Although I'm glad to have been able to help, I think getting to see more of Sicily would have made the trip more fun.

Why did you choose this program?

I chose Travel for Teens because my older sister had participated in the program two years prior to me. Both of her trips were transformational and amazing in different ways.

Her first trip was to London, Paris, and Barcelona. Her second trip was a community service trip in Fiji. My sister's experiences were each so unique that I knew that when my parents would allow me to travel, I would be going with Travel for Teens.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

Travel for Teens handles the entire itinerary. As a participant, you have to handle transportation to the group flight or to the location of the first destination on the itinerary. Travel for Teens can also help you make those arrangements for an added fee.

While you are traveling, there is a little bit of free time and you can walk around on your own and shop around a bit. But overall, Travel for Teens organizes the whole trip.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

I had a very unique experience because I did community service working on a farm with a family who temporarily takes in children in need.

I was the there to help with the kids and to help build a path. Because we were living on the farm and in one location, we would wake up every morning, eat breakfast, and get right to work! We would have a snack break and lunch break.

After lunch we would finish up our work and get some free time before dinner which is when we showered. Then, we ate dinner and got to hang out with the kids before bedtime!

What were you most surprised by during your time abroad?

One of the greatest benefits of going on a Travel for Teens trip aside from seeing new sights and and experiencing new cultures, is the friendships you make.

I’m not sure I realized how close I would become with the people I would meet on the trip. I met people from all over the U.S., and the world.

At first they were strangers, but then many of them became my lifelong friends. It’s amazing the bonding that goes on. One of my best friends that I made is from Germany but lives in China. I talk to her everyday!
