My recent internship experience in Hong Kong, facilitated by AIP (Asia Internship Program), has been an exceptional chapter in my professional development. The comprehensive support provided, coupled with the vibrant professional and cultural landscape of Hong Kong, has left an indelible mark on my professional journey. International Environment

Hong Kong is an amazing place. There is no better place in the world. A lot of people believe that Singapore is the heart of Asia, but I am convinced it's Hong Kong. Business, trade, money, deals are all around Hong Kong. The first time I heard about Hong Kong was a documentary movie called "A century of power". The amount of inspiration I received from the movie was over the top. From that day I knew that if there is a place for me to grow my career that place would be Hong Kong.

After confirming my passion towards the country, I didn't know what kind of career should I follow and go with. History was my favorite subject in school, and I've read a lot about travelers who were bringing goods and materials all around the world with their ships, so I became obsessed with logistics industry. What are the most efficient and safe ways to transfer goods from one part of the world to another? How can the companies reduce the cost of transportation and make it more sustainable as well as environmentally friendly? Those questions were in my mind and driving me towards personal developments and career growth within logistics industry.

Combining these two factors, I realized my destiny. Hong Kong the logistical hub of Asia if not the world, and I clearly have a passion towards the transportation of goods. Instead of waiting for a perfect opportunity and perfect conditions I've talked to my parents and they supported my idea to go to Hong Kong for the winter period to do an internship. Since I didn't know anything and anyone in Hong Kong, I found AIP. These guys help students to not only find an internship but also assist with on-ground support like accommodation, transportation and some social activities. Within few months and some simple steps like interview and my CV being sent to AIP they manages to organize an interview with great company and they had a logistics position, under the supervision of the logistics manager. As soon as everything was confirmed I booked my flight and started crossing out the days before my departure. When I arrived to Hong Kong AIP came to meet me and picked me up and gave me some good tips for my time here!

Overall I'm grateful to AIP to make my dreams came true, more than that I am planning to re-apply for one more internship next year with AIP as well.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?

Stinky tofu.... it wasn't my favorite that's for sure

I just finished the last day of my finance internship in Hong Kong and I don’t want to leave. I love the company that I was able to work with and met many great people.

Looking back 6 months ago I’m so happy that I chose AIP for my internship experience because they found the perfect placement for me. I learned a lot of valuable things from the company that I worked with and I’m sure it will benefit me in my future career.

Friends that I’ve met from various networking events, which AIP arranged, are having a going away party for me and I’m going to miss them. This was my very first internship that I’ve done and am so glad I chose to do it abroad. I gained so much from this experience and can’t wait to come back to Hong Kong.

What would you improve about this program?

AIP you have to make more of those dinners! thanks to that me and all the other interns we found new friends and the food was so good.

Dennis Scharpf is the Head of Business Development for Asia Internship Program. Dennis is a German national who grew up in the United States and has lived in Thailand for 7 years.

What is your favorite travel memory?

My favorite travel memory would definitely have to be when I went on a family vacation to Thailand back in 2005. We spent most of our time in Phuket but also had a brief stay in Bangkok. It was my first time to Phuket, and this was recently after the infamous tsunami in 2004. I found it very interesting how the locals were recovering from the devastation, but I was also quite impressed with how fast they were able to redevelop this popular tourist destination.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

I believe that I have grown a tremendous amount since my first day working with AIP. Originally, I did an internship as a content writer and previously didn't have any work experience. After six months of the internship, I was able to gain an incredible amount of relevant knowledge – much more than I did in university, to be honest. Working with AIP enabled me to see various departments of the business, and I think this has put me in a position to further develop myself

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

The story that comes to mind the most was about a Mexican student who came to AIP's office once he arrived in Thailand for his internship with an architecture firm. He was a recent graduate and very motivated to work full time in Thailand after his internship. I remember the AIP staff giving him all kinds of tips and suggestions to give him the best opportunity to get hired for a full time position. Almost 2 years later, he is still in Thailand pursuing his dream by living and working abroad.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

Personally, I would really like to experience our South Korea program! I've never been to Korea, and I'm quite fascinated with the culture. Also, there are so many opportunities to take advantage of and explore. I'm also a big fan of Korean BBQ and fast internet speeds, so those would be some nice perks!

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

I think our young and international team makes us very unique and special. Our staff is from all over the world, which helps bring different perspectives to our internship program. It's hard to choose one thing but I'm always proud of our team when we can provide value to our program participants and put a smile on their faces.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

I think the biggest factor for a business to be successful is perseverance! Many entrepreneurs today are pursuing business ideas for the wrong reasons, and eventually fold.

When you have a passion for something and put in the work, you know you're doing something right.

There are always going to be ups and downs but pushing through those hard times makes it so much sweeter in the end. It's kind of like working out – no pain no gain!
