An adventure in the coffee country

My experience with the intern group in Colombia was both exciting and educational. This is the first time I have ever left the country and it was very scary when I first arrived. I never took any Spanish classes in school so unfortunately I was going into this journey without any knowledge of the local language. Don’t worry though I’m here to tell you that if you are in the same situation as I was you’ll be okay. Without the intern group and the help of our advisor Maria I would have been lost. Luckily they are there with you the entire time assisting in anyway possible. They have Spanish classes providing you with the basic information necessary to get by on your own. You will pick up so many new words and phrases simply just from existing so don’t worry if you’re Spanish isn’t the best or Is just a little rusty, you will get plenty of practice and quickly become confident going out in public. The city of Medellín is one of the most amazing places on earth and there are so many cool places that are a must see here. The intern group generously hosts events for you throughout the time your here. My favorite tour was the trip to Guatape! There is an enormous rock with stairs taking you to the top for a spectacular view of all the different lakes and mountains in the landscape. Later you tour through the city after eating a delicious local lunch. Finally you go out on a relaxing boat ride to end the perfect trip. There are also many different towns outside of Medellín that are absolutely stunning and worth visiting if you have the chance. Jardin, la cascada, salta del buey, cascada el hato, and puerto triunfo are all some of my favorite places that I visited outside of Medellín. Aside from all of the fun and exciting things to do here, I have had a very wonderful experience in helping me to decern my future career path. I came to the intern group looking for an international experience to learn new cultures and just a different part of the world. I also came looking for help in finding an internship that could teach me the necessary skills to move forward in my career. I can confidently say that I will be leaving my internship not just properly prepared for the next step in my career path but also well traveled! I will never forget the many amazing people I have met through this internship and will cherish these memories forever! I highly recommend this amazing fun adventurous trip to everyone. Thank you so much to everyone on the intern team for making this possible! Especially thank you to Maria for being the support we all needed every step of the way!

What was your funniest moment?
There’s of course several funny/embarrassing moments I have experienced here. One of the best I had was when I went to lunch with some co-workers and the server asked what I would like to eat in which I replied “nada hoy” this quickly became an inside joke between my colleagues and I.
Pros
  • New culture
  • New language
  • New skills from internship
Cons
  • Foreign country so your away from family
  • I don’t have my car here so it can be inconvenient traveling to places
  • Getting lost in the big city

3 month internship in Colombia

The experience in Colombia with the intern group was by far the best experience I’ve had in my life. I’ve only ever lived in the UK, so moving across the world to Colombia for 3 months was daunting. But Maria, the programme coordinator, along with the other interns on the programme, made the experience better than I could’ve imagined. Whenever one of the interns had a problem (for whatever reason, big or small) Maria was always so supportive. There were many times she came down to Indie to talk to us in person which made the whole experience a lot easier because I always felt reassured. I’m so glad I had the experience with intern group rather than on my own. The internship was such a valuable experience and helped me to learn so much. I felt so supported the whole way through and have left with such special connections.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I was working in the government but because it’s such a big building with so many people working there, I never expected to meet the governor. However, I was able to travel a lot with the governor and the press team to different towns and was introduced to him. I was able to have a short conversation with him which was really cool.
Pros
  • Support with every and anything
  • Ability to travel such a geographically diverse country
  • Activities organised
Cons
  • There were some issues with Indie

Great experience to push yourself out of your comfort zone!

Interning in Colombia as a digital nomad intern was an amazing experience! I learnt so much about myself and what I’m capable of doing, in both a professional and personal capacity.

Meeting people from Colombia and from across the world was an absolute highlight of my internship. These connections helped me really grow my understanding of different cultures.

Being a digital nomad was awesome - it meant I had the flexibility to explore the country while still gaining valuable work experience.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
There are so many diverse birds in Colombia! Going up to feed the hummingbirds was an unforgettable experience. I discovered a passion for birds which I never knew I had until I lived in Colombia!
Pros
  • Connections with interns and host organisation
  • Food was delicious and plentiful!

Worth the while

This experience will take you on a roller coaster, driven by rich cultural exposure and a unique placement experience from the other side of the planet. The Intern Group provided a very warm and safe environment for us to work and have fun. Throughout the program, you will develop new ideas and approaches, meet new people, and undoubtedly acquire a range of skills. This includes not only technical skills relevant to your placement but also broader skills such as traveling, personal growth, application of transferable skills, and overall self-development.

Experience of a lifetime!

I did my internship with The Intern Group in Colombia and I don’t have enough words to describe how amazing it was. The internship experience was beyond my expectations and the activities that were set up by the company were amazing. I cannot express how much this helped me in a professional matter. Also, our coordinator Maria was amazing and was always there for us. Please don’t think twice about doing your internship in Colombia! You will never regret being in such a beautiful country and with such beautiful people.

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment was when we were watching the Alborada in the rooftop with the other interns and we couldn’t stop laughing and crying because it was a really beautiful scene.
Pros
  • Great for CV building
  • Great to meet and know other cultures
  • A way to understand more of your field of choice

Simply Amazing

Even though changing careers might be difficult or uncertain, that is what I decided to do. I returned to school and completed a bachelors degree at the University of Texas at Arlington on May of 2019.
I am so happy that during my time at UTA I learned about The Intern Group from the Golden Key International Honor Society. In my opinion, what they do it is simply amazing. Taking part on an internship experience is beneficial not only for young adults, but for professionals like me that chose to change careers.
The Intern Group has a dedicated staff with the most welcoming attitude. They have a passion that drives them to give their best to every single intern, from the moment of the initial interview with the headquarters staff in London, to the moment of the exit interview with the program’s country staff.
I chose to go to Medellín, Colombia. Camila, Catalina, Alejandra, and the rest of the staff were great at taking care of our needs, keeping us informed, planning our excursions, choosing the best partner companies, and everything else they did.
If anyone is still thinking if they should apply, I would say: Go for it! I am sure that the program they chose and the staff at their host country will be amazing wherever they chose to go with The Intern Group.

An Unforgettable, Un-missable Experience!

I spent 3 months interning in Medellín, Colombia, with the Intern Group. It has been one of the best experiences of my life - so much so that even though I haven't left Medellín yet, I'm already planning on coming back!

The Intern Group was very professional and supportive throughout my entire internship. They placed me in a law firm that was absolutely PERFECT for me! I was able to work in a field that I enjoy doing, with workmates who have become like a second family to me. I learned so much about the international legal field, as well as how to adapt to different work cultures.

My accomodation was amazing. I specifically asked to be placed in an apartment with other Colombians in order to improve my Spanish, and the Intern Group found me an apartment with the best roommates I could possibly ask for. The view was beautiful, and the location so convenient - we lived right above 2 supermarkets, and the metro station was a short walk away. The apartment complex also had a pool, jacuzzis, and a gym! It was a luxurious place to live in.

The Intern Group planned social events and professional development workshops for us, and were always there for us when we needed any slight thing. These events were always enjoyable, and allowed us to really get into Colombian culture. As a group of interns, we were a close, tight-knit family. It is a wonderful feeling to leave Medellín knowing that I now have life-long friends from all over the world.

Overall, the Intern Group organised the most incredible internship, and because of them, I was able to really enjoy my time in Colombia. I learned so much academically and professionally, and have gained so many close friends. I wholeheartedly recommend this program!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice to future travelers on this program is: keep an open mind and an open heart. Always be willing to try new things, to meet new people, and to put yourself out there! The Colombian culture and the people are so warm and welcoming, and the best way to enjoy it is to dive headfirst and really live it. The first step you should take is to the step that takes you outside of your comfort zone.

INCREDIBLE, ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE!!!

My experience interning for 3 months in Medellín, Colombia was one of the most amazing, wholesome periods of my life. The Intern Group facilitated all of this and were consistently outstanding throughout my time here. My placement incorporated every aspect of what I study and what I enjoy doing as well as a few unrelated topics that enabled me to learn a completely new skillset. My accomodation was excellent beyond words. The furniture and bedding was very comfortable, we had everything we needed, an amazing view of the city, it was located very close to shopping centres, workplace, and transport, and we had a huge pool and jacuzzi within the complex! It was honestly a treat to live there. The Intern Group were always very helpful and efficient with whatever we needed whether it was to do with our placements, accomodation, or general experience. The social aspect of the program was fantastic, we always had something fun to do or top recommendations for where to go and what to eat etc. The events organized by TIG were always culturally insightful and very enjoyable and the professional development workshops were extremely useful for improving my academic and professional skills. There is a huge sense of community among the interns and with the TIG team and I definitely left feeling like a part of me will always remain in Colombia. Every aspect of my internship program organized by The Intern Group allowed me to make the most of my time in Colombia, improve my academic, professional and personal skills, and gain an unforgettable and unparalleled internship experience that I don't believe I would find elsewhere. I 110% recommend this program to anyone who is considering doing an internship!!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
This experience, as well as any internship or exchange anywhere is really what you make of it. To get the most out of this I strongly recommend to arrive with an open mind and be prepared for things to not go as planned but know that they will work out in another way! This advice really applies to life in general. Everyone has different interests and that is absolutely fine, what matters is that you are proactive and look for the opportunities and experiences that you wish to have. Sometimes getting used to life in a Latin American country can be tough for people who are not used to it, but pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, talking to everyone and anyone, trying all the foods (even if you don't even want to ask what it is!), and being prepared for any spontaneous adventure is the best way to make the most out of this internship program, and whatever cultural exchange/travel experience you may have!

Questions & Answers

Applicants have the opportunity to complete an internship in a wide variety of different industries in Medellín. More information can be found here: https://www.theinterngroup.com/destination/internships-in-c… I am also happy to be contacted, as an alumnus of the Colombia programme, to answer further queries.

Okay perfect, thank you so much!

Language can be a hurdle. You need to go with the intent of learning Spanish as to communicate better. They really appreciate it. Time is also not as strict, I remember getting to work for 8am as this was the designated start time and I was the only person there, so that is a little bit different. Apart from that, they are very friendly and curious to learn more, so just relax and enjoy!
