About Program

Medical internship in Thailand is the best way to learn and grow, and Volunteering Solutions will ensure that each of you gets to experience something incredible. Medical Interns in this project will be paired with a full-time Thai doctor and work five days a week (Mon – Fri) usually from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. In special cases, interns may work on weekends and evenings.

Please note that the daily working hours can vary depending on the workload and hospital schedule. Interns will shadow the Thai doctor in their normal, daily routines and assist with professional responsibilities.

About the medical program (dentistry) in Chiangmai
This is in my opinion complete fraud!
For 4 weeks the charged me €1,680.00€ with zero value provided by the so-called organisation.

The quality of the volunteer house is a disaster:
A super tiny, shared room on the third floor with stairs only and a small bathroom in bad conditions!
There are nearly 10 people in the house sharing one fridge and one TV on the ground floor.
Every day a man came to each bedroom when no one was there, with the excuse of checking whether the AC or the light was on.
This is a pure violation of privacy especially when considering that the rooms where for girls only!!!!
The breakfast consists of Muesli, yoghurt and bananas to maximize the profit of this rip-off!

about the management:
Of Course, they won't pay any money for picking us up from the airport. It was with the company truck which I had to sit in the back of it with my luggage.
On the first day they just got me to the hospital in the back of the same truck, showed me the dental clinic of it and told me here are the dentists go introduce yourself, which I believe, I could have done without them.
They told me I must manage the time with doctors that I’m shadowing myself and there is no specific schedule!
There was not one second in this program that I felt I’m here to help someone which is the definition of volunteer work in the name of charity. It's just a way of making money in the name of charity and providing the worst quality of stay to maximize the profit!

For a long weekend I stayed in Hua Hin at the beach in a super nice private room with an amazing pool including breakfast and it cost me only €21 a night.
I have no idea what this organization is getting money for if you just compare the value!
The only thing they told me about the hospital was to coordinate with the doctor, so I did and asked the doctors to take one day off and then on Monday I receive very rude and disrespectful messages from Imm trough one of the volunteers, accusing me of not showing up at work before even contacting any of the doctors.
After complaining at Volunteering Solutions in the UK I was told I must talk directly to the local agency to sort out the problems. My contract is with Volunteering Solutions and not with any local sub-contractor.
I will report the company for fraud and claim my money back in court if necessary!

We are sorry that you were unhappy about the program. Your unannounced early departure and dissatisfaction of the program was quite a surprise, as everytime the local coordinators checked in with you, you told them everything was fine. The dentists in the department and hospital of your placement said you also seemed happy learning with them. All of our recent interns and other volunteers have been very happy with their placements. As is stated, the dental internship is an observation based activity. Aside from volunteer projects, we also arrange shadowing / observation based internships as well in private hospital placements. You had joined this program. The details of the program were provided to you beforehand and a detailed Pre departure booklet was also provided outlining the program information. Yes, the volunteer and intern accommodation had 10 people staying there, but they are spread between six bedrooms. The top floor room has its own refrigerator and kitchenette. Our safety coordinator does a check of the house each morning when all volunteers and interns have left for their programs. This safety check is also in place to turn off any electrical devices that may have been left on. Transport is provided on a Chiang Mai style mini-bus, which is a modified pickup truck with covered, padded seating in the back. This is consistent with transport used throughout Chiang Mai and Thailand.

It was an amazing experience during my medical internship in Thailand. It was really helpful as a medical student. Also it was incredible to learn new culture and be part of an wonderful group of volunteers. During my free time, it was interesting to visited the most iconic parts of Thailand. Nevertheless, we don't have enough time to do it because of the schedule, it was incredible all the places where we went. The stuff were amazing and help us every time we needed.

What would you improve about this program?

For a medical student, it must be really helpful to have a translator because of the big language barrier.

I just want to start by saying that my 4 weeks here in Bangkok flew by so fast, I did not want to leave! The friendships and interactions that you experience on a trip like this are those that will stay with you forever! Seeing the people of Thailand live their lives was absolutely amazing. The medical Internship definitely left me with more knowledge and it was sweet to see the differences and similarities between here and America in the health care field. The staff was so welcoming and everyday their faces lit uo when we would walk through the door! They always welcomed up with drinks and snacks, very caring and giving! My whole time here I've felt so happy, I can't help but constantly smile! The staff here at volunteering solutions who set up my whole trip did a fantastic job and I would recommend going through this company to anyone! Every day I would get emails from the staff at volsol checking in on me and they still continue to do so even though my program has ended. They honestly made sure my trip was perfect and all of my expectations have been met and I can not thank them enough! This is an amazing program not only to volunteer but to experience life in a new culture, this journey has opened my eyes and has given me a great appreciation, these memories that have been made will stay with me forever and I would not trade that for anything!

What would you improve about this program?

The hospital we were interning at was about an hour away from the accommodation house that we stayed at. Some days the traffic was very backedup so the car ride seemed so long. Transportation is provided but a closer hospital would be nice!

Why did you choose this program?

I wanted to learn about the medical system in another country as well as learning about culture in Thailand.

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

The program itself provided all volunteers/interns a wonderful house to stay in during the duration of the program, as well as transportation to and from the project site everyday. On my own I learned that each day would be different and you just have to go into it with an accepting, open mind! Not all things may be the same as the way you do them back in your home country!

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

My advice to future volunteers/interns would be, be excited and eager but have an open mind! This is an amazing experience! The medical project I will say is more of a learner experience rather than hands on, but take in as much as you can because it is very meaningful.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

The average week would be a 7:00am pick-up about 45 minutes to the hospital depending on traffic, so you would start at 8:00am and depending on the medical staff schedule you could either be busy until 2 or 3 pm or some days you would get done early. But there is plenty to do at the hospital, there is a full market there 3 times a week. Then the bus would pick you up at 3:00pm and another 45 minute drive home. Definitely a full day!

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it and/or how did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear was the language barrier but the good thing is, this program also gives you a 2 day orientation lesson which includes many phrases and terms in Thai that are such a big help! And a lot of Thai natives also know a few English phrases so it was not bad at all. They are eager to learn English and you will definitely see that as you meet a lot of staff and everyday people on the streets of Thailand

Did you feel safe during your time abroad?

Absolutely! I have never felt more safe in my life, and I will say I was very skeptical about this when I first came to Thailand especially being with just one friend, but honestly Thailand really is the land of smiles! These people are the sweetest and most welcoming people you will come across. Now this does not mean go out alone and not have a care in the world, you still have to be smart and observant, aware of your surroundings, but I 100% never felt uncomfortable ever.
