Intern in Barcelona, Spain

As an intern in Barcelona, I had an amazing experience, thanks to the AIFS program and my incredible supervisor, who provided invaluable support and guidance. The program was well organized, from my welcoming homestay to thoughtfully planned activities. I only wish there had been more events that fit into my busy schedule so interns could participate more often and have more time to connect with other students.

Overall, it was a truly rewarding experience that I’ll always cherish. My supervisor played a huge role in my growth during the internship, pushing me to give my best at work and encouraging me to explore Barcelona more through her kind and thoughtful advice.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice is to enjoy every second and be open to new experiences, especially when it comes to trying the amazing local food. Embrace every opportunity to learn and grow, including practicing the language of the place you’re staying. It’s not only a great way to connect with people and culture but also an invaluable skill to have as a second language is so important in today’s world.
Pros
  • Enjoying every moment ensures you create lasting memories of your time abroad.
  • The language and culture helps you build meaningful relationships.
Cons
  • Trying new foods or adapting to unfamiliar customs may take time and effort.
  • Being open to everything could lead to overcommitting or feeling drained.

Amazing Internship Experience in Barcelona

I completed an internship in Barcelona, Spain and I had the best experiences in my life. I was able to apply the internship as credits towards my degree, and AIFS has been such a wonderful and supportive program. The staff is amazing and personable, and with 30 something kids to look over, you can tell that our group really looked to them for support. Inma, my internship coordinator, placed me with an amazing company where I held a marketing position, and she was extremely supportive and a really well-rounded and wonderful person as well.

Fashion PR Internship

I was placed with a luxury fashion PR company for the program, and I learned so, so much from my experience here. As someone who had never worked in the industry before, I now feel confident to pursue my career in fashion PR further, and with the connections and experiences I've gained from this program, I've found a variety of solid job opportunities. The big-city environment also pushed me to become a lot more independent and sure of myself, so all around I've had incredible personal growth since starting this program.
The accommodations at St. George towers were absolutely fantastic and very safe, and I honestly had more room and was much more comfortable than I was initially expecting when joining the program. Weekly activities were planned, and since the internship can lead to a fairly busy schedule, Samia was very understanding if we were unable to attend. But, I would recommend going to as many as possible! They're a great opportunity to see things you might not otherwise have thought to explore.
Overall this experience is one I'm very glad I had, and thanks to my internship I feel much more on-track to achieve the career I'm aiming for.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
- The city is safe as long as you stay aware of your surroundings and are not out too late in sketchy areas. Just take the proper precautions to keep yourself safe and out of trouble and you should be fine.
- If you do run into trouble, though, whether it be with the internship or the city, Samia (the NYC program advisor) is always there to help with any issues you might have, so you never feel without a support system. Even if you just need someone to talk to about the little things, she's very sympathetic and gives great advice!
- You definitely need to budget more than you think for groceries, transportation, and general activities in your free time. If you are placed with an internship that does not cover commute costs, expect to be spending at least $34 per week just to get around. If you want to really experience the city and explore without financial stress, make sure you budget well and check the costs of activities you'd like to do on your own before starting your internship.
Pros
  • Gained independence and self sufficiency
  • Built a strong foundation for my career and made valuable connections
  • Got to know the city and fell in love with it, I'll be moving here very soon!
Cons
  • Financial stress can hit hard if you don't budget well

Film Internship

I had an incredible experience with AIFS that not only helped me grow in my career but also taught me a lot about myself. Despite facing some hardships and dealing with homesickness, the support I received made all the difference. Samia was like a cool aunt—always positive, supportive, and fun. Her bright spirit helped me stay grounded when I felt overwhelmed by the chaos of moving to NYC, a city I had never been to and where I didn’t know anyone.

AIFS is an amazing program that truly sets you up for success. It gave me the foundation I needed to launch my career, and so many doors have opened for me since participating. I highly encourage anyone considering this program to take that leap of faith—it’s worth it!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Comedian Amy Schumer and Dunkirk actor Finn Whitehead at the subway station. Both reading scripts on the train of course.
Pros
  • New experiences everyday, NYC is never boring EVER
  • Pushing your self and growing through discomfort and nerves
  • Networking all the time
Cons
  • Homesickness
  • Public Transportation can sometimes be confusing and have delays (a lot actually)
  • There's no time for a part time job.

A Life-Changing Experience with AIFS in Madrid

My name is Sebastian Aguilar, and I’m currently studying at Texas A&M International University. In the summer of 2024, I had the privilege of joining the Hispanic Studies Program at Universidad de Nebrija in Madrid, Spain, through AIFS Abroad. Looking back, I can confidently say that partnering with AIFS was one of the best decisions I made.

From the beginning, AIFS supported me every step of the way, providing comprehensive guidance, opening doors to networking, and fostering connections that will undoubtedly shape my future career. Lucas Zugasti, the Madrid Student Services Advisor, went above and beyond in ensuring everything went smoothly—from helping with apartment check-ins to organizing events that immersed us in Spanish culture. His advice and insights into student life in Madrid made adjusting to a new environment much easier. Additionally, Barbara Franconi, AIFS’s Director for Buenos Aires and Madrid, played a crucial role by encouraging me to apply for the AIFS Ambassador Program. Through this role, I’ve expanded my network, developed professionally, and created lasting connections within the AIFS community.

Academically, the International Management course taught by Professor Omar Espana Arrieta was a highlight. Professor Espana Arrieta’s approach, blending innovative teaching methods with real-world business insights, allowed us to lead projects and presentations that deepened our understanding of global business practices. For anyone interested in international business, I highly recommend this course. It not only sharpened my skills but also allowed me to connect with like-minded students, making the experience richer and more impactful.

This experience was invaluable in helping me pursue my long-standing dream of launching an international business in commerce and logistics. Growing up between the U.S. and Mexico, I was naturally drawn to global commerce, and Spain’s strategic position as a gateway to Europe, Latin America, and Africa provided insights into international business opportunities and challenges. My ambition to build a business rooted in global markets feels much more attainable now that I’ve seen the possibilities up close.

Studying abroad truly broadens horizons, and for students where opportunities to study internationally may seem distant, I encourage you to take a leap of faith. Yes, the process requires determination and resourcefulness, but AIFS offers support at every turn. Personally, I worked in a federal work-study position, participated in affiliate marketing, and even sold homemade treats to raise funds. It was challenging, but the investment was absolutely worth it.

For those who are ready to embark on this journey, my advice is to start, even if everything isn’t perfect. AIFS, along with resources at your home institution, can help you navigate any obstacles. The experience will equip you with the tools to become more than just a student; it will shape you as a global leader, ready to engage with the world’s complexities and opportunities.

Why did you choose this program?

Choosing to study and intern with AIFS in Rome during the spring of 2024 was a decision driven by a deep desire for personal growth, cultural immersion, and academic enrichment. Rome has always been a city rich in history, art, and culture, and I saw it as the perfect backdrop to expand my worldview while also advancing my academic and professional goals in counseling and family therapy. I was eager to experience life in a new environment, connect with diverse people, and gain insights that would broaden my understanding of the world and help me grow as an individual.

AIFS offered a unique combination of academic rigor and practical experience, allowing me to not only study but also intern in a global setting. This opportunity was invaluable to me, as it provided a hands-on experience that would directly benefit my future career in counseling. Working with people from different backgrounds in a city as vibrant as Rome allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of human behavior, relationships, and communication across cultures. The internships and classes I engaged in challenged me to think critically and adapt to new situations, which are essential skills in the field of family therapy.

Additionally, AIFS’s program structure, which included organized excursions and cultural experiences, was a key factor in my decision. I wanted a study abroad experience that went beyond the classroom, and AIFS delivered that with opportunities to travel across Italy and to other European countries. These experiences were not only enriching on a personal level but also helped me build a global perspective that I believe is crucial in today’s interconnected world. Ultimately, choosing to study and intern with AIFS in Rome was about stepping out of my comfort zone, embracing new challenges, and preparing myself for a future where I can make a meaningful impact.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

The University of Arkansas played a crucial role in assisting me with my study and internship experience in Rome through AIFS. The study abroad office guided me through the application process, ensuring that I understood academic requirements, credit transfers, and how my coursework in Rome would fit into my counseling and family therapy degree plan. They also provided essential information about scholarships and financial aid, helping make the experience more affordable. My academic advisors were incredibly supportive, helping me choose the right courses and encouraging me to maximize the unique learning opportunities available through AIFS.

Despite this support, there were several key aspects that I organized on my own. I took charge of my flight itinerary and travel logistics, making sure that all my plans aligned with my academic and internship commitments. Additionally, I was responsible for coordinating the details of my internship, from setting up initial meetings to managing my schedule while in Rome. Navigating these challenges independently helped me grow in confidence and adaptability, equipping me with skills that will serve me well in my future career.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

One piece of advice I would give to someone going on my program is to embrace flexibility and be prepared for the unexpected. Whether it’s adjusting to a new academic system, navigating a different culture, or dealing with travel logistics, things may not always go as planned—and that’s okay. I wish I had known just how important it would be to let go of the need for everything to be perfect and instead focus on making the most of every experience, even the challenges. I always tell my friends who are thinking about studying abroad to be open-minded, stay curious, and not be afraid to step outside their comfort zone, because that’s where the most growth happens.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

As a participant in the AIFS Study + Intern program in Rome, an average day or week is a dynamic blend of academics, professional experience, and cultural exploration. Typically, your weekdays are divided between attending classes and completing your internship. Mornings might start with Italian language courses or other academic classes, followed by an afternoon spent at your internship site, where you gain hands-on experience in your field. This allows you to apply what you’re learning in class to a real-world setting.

In the evenings, you might find yourself exploring the city’s historic streets, trying new Italian dishes, or meeting up with fellow students at a local café. The weekends are usually your time to explore even more of Rome or travel to nearby cities like Florence, Venice, or even neighboring countries. AIFS also organizes excursions and cultural activities throughout the semester, such as guided tours, cooking classes, or day trips, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in Italian culture.

Throughout the week, there’s a balance between structured academic and professional responsibilities, along with the freedom to explore, learn, and grow at your own pace. The program offers a comprehensive experience where every day brings new opportunities to engage with the rich history, culture, and vibrancy of Rome.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

Going into my experience abroad, my biggest fear was feeling overwhelmed by the challenges of living in a foreign country—especially balancing my studies, internship, and adapting to a new culture. I worried about navigating unfamiliar systems, from public transportation to academic expectations, and whether I would be able to handle everything on my own. The thought of being far from home and outside my comfort zone added to that anxiety.

However, once I arrived in Rome, I realized that the key to overcoming this fear was to embrace the uncertainty and trust in my ability to adapt. The support from AIFS and the friendships I formed with other students helped ease the transition. I also found that approaching each challenge with an open mind and a willingness to learn made everything more manageable. Over time, my fear turned into confidence as I successfully navigated the daily demands of living abroad. My view on the issue changed from seeing challenges as obstacles to viewing them as opportunities for growth and self-discovery. This experience taught me that stepping into the unknown can lead to some of the most rewarding and transformative moments in life.

What was the most unexpected lesson you learned during your time abroad, and how has it shaped your outlook on life and future travels?

One of the most unexpected lessons I learned during my time abroad was the value of slowing down and being present in the moment. In Rome, I quickly noticed that the pace of life was different from what I was used to—meals were leisurely, conversations were deep and unhurried, and people took time to appreciate the simple pleasures of daily life. At first, I struggled with this slower pace, especially coming from a culture that often values productivity and efficiency above all else. But as I spent more time in Rome, I began to embrace this way of living.

This shift in perspective has shaped my outlook on life and future travels. I've learned to prioritize quality experiences over rushing through a checklist of tasks. I now approach each day with more mindfulness, taking the time to savor moments and fully immerse myself in whatever I’m doing. Whether it’s exploring a new city or simply enjoying a cup of coffee, I try to be present and appreciate the experience. If I could do anything differently, I’d tell my pre-Rome self to let go of the need to plan every detail and instead allow space for spontaneity and unexpected discoveries.

Lydia spent her senior year of college interning abroad in Florence, Italy for a Tuscan Wine Touring company. What is your favorite travel memory?

When thinking of my favorite travel memories, an array of breathtaking new sights, laughter, stepping out of my comfort zone, and spending time with unforgettable people flashes through my mind. One memory that combines all four aspects was during my time interning abroad in Florence, Italy.

My roommates and I took a day trip to visit Cinque Terre, the string of centuries-old villages on the Italian Riviera coastline. After exploring Riomaggiore (picture the famous shot of colorful houses on a seaside cliff), the beach town of Monterosso al Mare was next on our list. The furthest villages away from each other, there were two options for methods of transportation: the train, or a strenuous 7.5 mile hike that could take up to 5 hours. While most of the group opted for the train, my roommate from Amsterdam was feeling adventurous and asked me to join her in the hike.

Together, we braved through climbing, descending, narrow passages, and steep, uneven stone steps. Though it was exhausting, the trek was well worth it as we discovered incredible views of the coast, lush olive groves, and exotic plants and flowers.

My favorite part was coming across a quaint stand selling limoncello during one of the descents, manned by a sweet old Italian man. While I may have regretted thinking that taking a limoncello shot in the middle of a 5-hour hike would be refreshing, I’ll never regret that I said yes to a new adventure that would turn into a cherished memory.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

I started working at Global Experiences fresh out of college, eager to learn and take on responsibilities. While I've gained technical skills such as learning how to code and Photoshop, I've also learned valuable soft skills that I'll have with me for the years to come. I've gained organizational skills and become more confident in my decision making. Through being welcomed to give new ideas and input, my creativity has also been able to grow.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

I'm lucky to be able to work with many of our alumni and interns while they're abroad and capturing their stories and experiences. I get to hear a lot of awesome perks that our interns receive from working hard at their internships, but my favorite was when our Barcelona Fashion Business intern, Olivia V., attended the 080 Barcelona Fashion Show for work. She was interviewed by Elle Magazine, and was featured on their next issue!

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

This question is perfect for me because I have gone on one of GE's internship abroad programs!

Fall of my senior year, I had a marketing internship abroad in Florence, Italy for 3 months. Studying abroad in Italy had always been a dream of mine, and Florence seemed like the perfect choice for many reasons. I wanted to experience a different culture, and knew that Florence had so much art, history and architecture to offer for me to learn and explore. For my first time living abroad, I wanted to live somewhere that was easy to get around in, yet was also an easy gateway to explore the rest of the country and Europe. The language barrier did not bother me either because I heard that Italians were friendly and just appreciated you trying to speak their language.

Upon arriving, these reasons proved to be right on all accounts. Interning in Florence, Italy was everything that I could have dreamed of and more!

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

I find Global Experiences to be unique because of how passionate every member of our team is about our mission. We've all had life-changing experiences abroad, and want to help young professionals gain a worldly perspective while enhancing their career path. We truly care about every single intern that goes through our program and are dedicated to finding the best possible match for them from pre-departure to when they're on the ground. I felt that myself as I was going through the Florence program, and was confirmed once I started working behind the scenes at GE.

I was especially proud of my team when we pledged to donate $20,000 every year in scholarships to interns. We want to make this experience accessible to as many students as possible, and to make this official was really exciting.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

I believe that the biggest factor in being a successful company is to value your customers and always put their best interests first. It's important to ask for their feedback, listen, and act on it. No one knows their customer journey better than they do. Using their data to create useful, personalized experiences for others is okay, but it's important not to abuse their data. A successful business starts and ends with valued customers.
