Amazing Experience

Best trip I've ever been a part of. Great mix of activities from field work to classroom sessions to sightseeing. 10/10 would recommend to anyone, regardless of your level of interest in sustainability/renewable energy.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The ride up to the village is really scary - just can't look down.

Outstanding experience with a creative and adventurous outlet

I was able to befriend some of the members of the GREEN Program, and develop a rapport with them before, during, and after taking the courses with them and the University of Reykjavik. This program was an incredible way to end my time as an undergraduate and transition into a young professional working for the Department of Environmental Protection and going to graduate school. Overall, this program has the sense of adventure as well as the creative outlet that students like myself could really benefit from. I feed off of ambition and challenge, and this program gave me that-- while also being in that "Goldilocks' zone" of not being overwhelming while also setting the bar high.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Try to keep in mind COVID's role in traveling in an international setting. I underestimated the issues it would cause.

Nepal Ethics Online Course

This two-week online course taught by Dr. Sagar Sharma from Kathmandu University about the Ethics of Sustainable Development was engaging and eye-opening. This course focused on the importance of ethics in sustainable development and the theories and practices behind it. Dr. Sharma encouraged us to engage in insightful, inclusive, and head-scratching discussions in an open and safe (virtual) environment. After taking this course I will definitely approach future projects and problems from a new, different, and more inclusive angle.

Additionally, each student was required to complete a Capstone project that was focused on sustainable development. The capstone project provided an opportunity for people from all different places and backgrounds to come together and collaborate to develop an innovative solution to a worldwide problem. I loved having the opportunity to work along side passionate people to develop a creative, ethical, and sustainable solution.

Response from The GREEN Program

Thank you so much for this wonderful review, Carly! We're glad that you found Dr. Sharma's discussions interesting and insightful. You also did a fantastic job with your capstone project presentation. It was great to see so many interdisciplinary minds come together for a solution to a sustainable development issue!

The Best Study Abroad Experience!

If you are looking for a study abroad experience, you have to check out The Green Program! The Green Program provides an amazing program that is also compatible with the schedule of busy college students. The 10-day program was jam-packed and full of knowledge. The Green Program first ensured that travel and accommodations were comfortable for all of its attendees. I enjoyed that along with the educational aspect of the program, The Green Program also highlighted the importance of learning the Nepalese people and their culture. We visited World Heritage UNESCO sites, visited renewable energy sites in the Kathmandu Valley, and ate traditional foods throughout the trip.

We also were able to transform the knowledge we learned from Kathmandu University into action when we installed the micro-grid system in a rural Nepalese village. The Green Program truly executed its mission in this program to utilize the world as a classroom. The students were encouraged to collaborate with the local people during the project, to learn more about the Nepalese culture, and to have a well-rounded understanding of the installation of the solar panels.

It is also important to mention how the program coordinators ensured that everyone on the trip was safe and welcomed. The Green Program is definitely a community builder that enabled all of the attendees to create lifelong relationships. I am extremely excited to attend another program led by The Green Program, and I am proud to be an alum of an incredible organization.

What was your funniest moment?
I shred so many laughs with everyone on our way to the village. It was a blast playing road trip games!

TGP

What I loved most about the course was being able to learn more about how I can consciously help people with my work in sustainable development! I feel like most of my education focuses on the environmental aspect of things without considering a community's social or cultural needs. The Nepal program not only considers the way that development impacts the environment, but it also explores how it impacts the people and their economies. In this course you are able to examine the interconnectedness of the relationships between people and planet, and it enables you to create a sustainable capstone project.

I think what stuck out most to me about the Nepal online course was that this was the most well facilitated class I ever took online (and I've spent three semesters taking online classes for my university). I can honestly say that I felt way more connected to people that I knew I was never going to meet in person who were thousands of miles away from me than I did with people that I could more easily access or potentially meet on campus. It was just a much better experience. Programs like these will be the future of intersectional education abroad, and will go a long way in achieving the sustainable development goals.

Response from The GREEN Program

Jaedyn, thank you so much for this fantastic review and for recognizing the impact of learning through an intersectional lense! You always had fantastic contributions to class discussions and we're so happy to see you take advantage of experiences such as these.

Nepal Ethics Course Review

I love all things sustainability. I was just expecting to meet like-minded people and have interesting discussions around ethics. I loved the conversations around Ishmael and what it brought. I liked that Prof Sharma called on people. I tend to be more of a listener but I was encouraged to think. I typed my thoughts and being called on kept me on top of it. I liked the food for thought questions. I liked Prof Sharma's personal stories. I want to know his life story! I would've liked more ice breakers in the beginning. I'd like to speak to more people in the group with face to face conversations (breakout rooms were nice). It would've also been interesting to go into different ethical theories and philosophers and apply them to real-world problems (eco-egotism, utilitarianism, the social contract, etc.).

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I think I would try to speak up more and reach out to the professor and everyone more often to get to know the other participants better.
Response from The GREEN Program

Hi Jade! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this review. We're glad that you enjoyed going outside of your comfort zone and inputting your thoughts during class discussions. We definitely plan to do more ice breakers to help the class get to know each other more before the course starts. Thank you for the feedback!

Nepal Ethics Course

**Note: I took the online certificate ethnics course so I could not rate the housing. I rated 5/10 as a neutral answer**
This is my second time being with TGP after the hackathon. Every time, TGP blows my mind and I gain new knowledge. I love how our conversations explode every class. It's very different from all of my other courses and a great change for me. I enjoyed doing the capstone project again and every time it's really rewarding and I always learn something new. I would highly recommend students to take this course as it is very applicable in many fields of study.

Response from The GREEN Program

Hi Janice! Thank you so much for leaving this review and thank you for your continued support for TGP. It's been great to see you grow on campus as a TGP ambassador. We appreciate you!

Amazing course!

This class was really great. Best virtual course I have attended so far! I loved the fluidity of the class and how the professor guided the class discussion while still being unassuming and allowing everyone to express their own opinions, especially in the tough and controversial conversations we had. Everyone's perspective was welcome and respected. I really liked hearing different perspectives and being challenged to think outside of my initial understanding, and realizing that different countries need different solutions. Would highly recommend taking it!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be open minded and willing to have your initial thoughts and perspectives change :) and be ready to grow as a person and as a scholar!
Response from The GREEN Program

Hi Bianca! Thank you so much for this wonderful review. We're so glad that you found it meaningful to take this virtual course alongside students and young professionals from all over the world. It's been amazing to see you continue to advocate for TGP on campus as an ambassador as well. Thank you for your hard work and dedication!

Iceland online

I did the course online and I will be traveling later this summer. I am so excited to get to see Iceland in person and explore it. The course was very fun and taught me a lot about energy that I didnt know!
I would definitely reccommend this to anyone who loves Sustainability and learning about Environmental Sciences/energy. This program offers its students many connections for future jobs and helps us reach our dreams.
I found this program through my school and I have been looking forward to it for months now.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I think starting the course was the scariest part. Not knowing how to work the website and not knowing anyone in the program was definitely very nerve-racking.
Response from The GREEN Program

We're so glad that you found the Iceland online course fun and interesting! We're so excited that you will get to travel to Iceland this summer and apply your classroom learning to current sustainability challenges. Thanks Megan!

Amazing Experience

I was so grateful I was able to visit a new country with the GREEN program. We not only witnessed the culture and lifestyle, we were also involved. You get to build, fix, etc. with civilians. You learn so much. You see amazing views and learn the stories about them. You learn how different society is over there, and the dynamic of wealth in one city. It's an amazing trip, very educational, and so much fun. When I went, we learned about the water system in Cusco, and how it's struggling. We witnessed various waste flow directly into the river, the Rio Huatanay. We learned how there were ways to help filter the waste, but still not up to par. I got to think about how I was going to help the water filter generators, specifically. Your mentors are quick to launch counter questions to the argument, and in the end you learn so much more.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Honestly it wasn't a huge deal, but I realized I brought too small of a backpack with me on the trip (it was just a sling bag). We were going to places where we'd only bring our camping backpacks, not our entire luggage. I was fortunate to have a friend who happened to bring an extra camping bag and let me borrow it.
Response from The GREEN Program

Thank you so much for this wonderful review Sarah! We are so glad that you found the community engaging aspects of the program valuable, and that you enjoyed all of the adventure/educational components as well!
