Internship Program

The internship has been a month. Open communication was one of the strongest and most apparent skills that I learned during my internship. When I first started interning, I was intimidated and nervous to ask too many questions because I didn’t want to admit that I didn’t understand or that I needed extra help with something. Luckily I got over that fear quickly because asking questions is the only way to learn what you are really supposed to be doing. I found that my boss and fellow staff members appreciated it more if I asked too many questions to make sure I really understood what it was doing and that I did it correctly. If I had not worked with such cooperative and helpful people, I probably would have been too intimidated to ask questions in my next job. Now that I know it is not bad to ask questions, I won’t have to struggle with it in my future job. Without open communication between everyone in an office, I don’t see how any work can be done.

I am very grateful to the internship unit for providing me with such a good internship opportunity. Through this, I have definitely gained valuable work experience, and grew as an individual.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Actually before the internship, I feel warried for my hotel. Because compare the study tour we are not good. But not bad when I lived in. It's amazing.

Experienced the busy and Prosperous journey of Shanghai

My name is Liu Chang. I am working in SMH International as a intern. The company's address is located on South Shaanxi Road, only four metro stations away from our hotel. I mainly responsible for the department of new media, the main task of this deparment is writing newsleter. For example, one of the wechat public account essay written by me is"California Strawberry Opens the Cool Summer" .From this kind of task I have learned how to write eassy in “Wechat language”.

Translating dish recipes is also an important task which I have ever done. From these recipes I learned some foreign spices which I had never heard before, such as sweet basil,Jiliet, etc. The fantastic ideas of foreigh chefs also opened my eyes.

Also, I did some simple and boring work, such as translate addredd list, scan newspaper and so on. But there’s always someone to do that.

Most noteworthy of all is that,I made hundreds of customer service calls, which greatly improved my psychological quality and ability to communicate with strangers.

As for the Accommodation arrangements,Thank NSC for choosing the Rujia Selected Hotel in Xujiahui , a busy downtown area. The hotel is located in a convenient geographical place. It is very close to Xujiahui Metro Station and Shanghai Stadium Metro Station. It is surrounded by shops and supermarkets, with a wide range of restaurants and coffee shops. The hotel's facilities are also very good, the rooms are very large, and we can have a good-taste breakfast every day.

Finally, thanks to the CBS and NSC's arrangement of internship in SH,I am very satisfied with everything about this project.

Intern

The supervisor is very kind and is willing to share updated information on taxation and online accounting with me. I learnt a lot from this internship. My main responsibility is to do market survey on SaaS and online accounting. It is amazing that I was exposed to a new area. The task is both challenging and interesting for me. Besides, my supervisor told me something on taxation policies and the differences between China and overseas.

The program lasts for six weeks, which is enough for me to learn about the process of accounting and auditing of a company. I am very glad that there is no OT in this company.

The accomodation condition is ok and the housing is not very far from my company. Overall, it is a meaningful and pleasant experience for me.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Chat with your colleagues during lunchtime, which helps you learn a lot.
Organize everything well, and you will have fun in it.

intern

I am so happy to participate in this program and learned a lot. through this experience, I realized my strengh and weakness in the workplace, which are much different from my student experience. I appreciated this experience to make myself suitable for future career and survive in a fierce job market. It gave me an opportunity to go out of campus and find a institution to apply what I learned. I had a great honer to be a member of SMH. In this process, I adopted the method of seeing, asking and learning to understand the specific business knowleadge about our company's daily work and expand my professional knowleadge, which laid a solid foundation for my future career. From the view of individual development, the greatest impact on me should be the personal working style.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
The most unfamiliar thing I ate should be Bao Master.

intern

This internship experience is very interesting and instructive. From my internship in Shanghai, I used a lot of knowledge learned from the course in this academic year, and used it in my internship.

For example, in a weekly Chinese market insights, I use the understanding and understanding of the society, plus the guidance and help of leader, to write reports more and more handy. Before social practice and entering the workplace, it gave me a great opportunity to improve and practice.

This internship is not only helpful in social practice, but also helpful in entertainment and understanding of local fengturen in Shanghai.

Internship

I was interested in the working in advertising company because I would like to know how TVCs and advertisment work for companies in China. The company I worked at was a leading company in the advertisment field.

This is a Nice program. I recived good support from the agency and had a fun experience in shanghai.

The whole process was smooth, the accommodation facility was very nice. It’s sort of sad that the internship work was unpaid. Of course I understand that the accommodation cost was already more than the amount that internship shall be paid to.

The work environment was friendly and sharp. I am very happy with the whole arrangement. From the enrolments at uni and to actually working in the company in shanghai.

Generally I strongly recommend others to join the programme.

What was your funniest moment?
The moment where I first met my advisor at work and they were surprised with my previous work experience.

Shanghai

As the financial hub of China, Shanghai is a great place to do a business internship. There are many things to do during the day and the nightlife is buzzing. Make sure you try out the local cuisine, the food there is superb as well.

After spending time in various Chinese cities, I found Shanghai to be the most convenient and lively. I also felt very safe living in shanghai, you will have no dramas staying out late at night, you can always find a cab or a tuk-tuk. Just Just make sure you read a few tips online about how to avoid Chinese scams, a few mates of mine where careless and got stitched up (especially at dodgy establishments). Overall I'd compare my experience in shanghai to that of getting a new girlfriend, it's romantic and exciting but will, at the same time, leave a fair dent in your credit card.

What would you improve about this program?
Nothing major I can think of. Perhaps a bit more assistance with the essentials of living in China (credit card and phone payment).

Intern Shanghai

Deciding to intern overseas was a great choice which allowed myself to gain valuable cultural insights and experience which I would have been able to find domestically. Shanghai is an amazing metropolis to explore and discover the infinite delights that it has to offer. Especially the extensive culinary options ranging with everything from Peking duck to Hot Pot as well as Yakitori and more.

Howa and Rodrick were excellent hosts during my stay in Shanghai and were helpful in assisting whenever necessary. They ensured I was comfortable and organised everything for the duration of the internship.

Overall a great experience that I would highly recommend to anyone looking to undertake an internship and a new and challenging environment.

What would you improve about this program?
Clear guidelines on what is expected of host companies offering internships which are aligned to the expectations of interns.

6 week internship in Shanghai!

Shanghai is a very busy city with a huge population. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to live and work in such a big city while having the chance to meet so many different people from so many different backgrounds.

From my original interviews until the time came that I was due to leave China, my hosts Howa and Roderick from Next Step Connections, were always more than happy to help whenever I had any problem and even took the time to show me around the city to make sure I was comfortable in my new surroundings.

I encourage more people to try out these kinds of programs, step out of your comfort zone and see how people live in a developing country! Come here with an open mind and try to do as many different things that you can find. I found the cheapest and yummiest food was in the tiny restaurant in the suburbs, although the restaurants weren't to the standard of those in Western cities, the true tastes of Shanghai can be found if you just get out there and try new things.

What would you improve about this program?
In my opinion, the number one priority when arriving in China is to set up a bank account so that you have access to WeChat, as using this mobile payments system relieves the stress of carrying around large amounts of cash every day.

Awesome Experience

NSC did a great job in coordinating my experience while abroad in addition to connecting me to local companies from which I could choose to work from. This experience was the best of my life and it could not have been so great if it weren't for NSC. The staff did a great job of finding an interneship within their field, coordinating living arrangements at an excellent location, providing activities for our group to participate in throughout the summer, and addressing the needs of anyone in the program. Being a public health major, I was connected with a medical tourism company located in Bangkok. The majority of the staff spoke English and were very accommodating, so I was able to transition seamlessly into the workplace. I gained a great deal of experience throughout the program, and I would recommend them to anyone traveling abroad.
