The Best Experience of My Life!

Studying abroad in Sydney, Australia was truly the best experience of my life filled with adventure, excitement, new friends, and new opportunities. Going abroad with TEAN was awesome because of all the opportunities offered to students, assistance with academics, housing, and adjusting to a new city, and great staff to help me in any situation I may have needed. Through TEAN, I was able to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef, hike around the Blue Mountains, and go to a very cool rugby game in Sydney. TEAN also helped coordinate my housing situation and I absolutely loved where I lived with all the amenities I needed- The Meriton Suites on Bondi Junction. During my three months abroad, I was able to travel to many places with my best friends such as Bangkok and Phuket in Thailand, Queenstown, New Zealand, Nadi, Fiji, and cities throughout Australia like Mildura, Cairns, and Nelson Bay. I took advantage of all the opportunities placed in front of me and had an adventure of a lifetime. Through TEAN, I met some of my best friends that will forever be my travel buddies! After living in Sydney for three months, it has become my favorite place in the world. The amazing people, clean and safe city, beautiful beaches, active lifestyle, and the best coffee I have ever had made my experience even better. Because of my amazing abroad experience with TEAN, I want to move back to Sydney in my near future!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I traveled a lot throughout my study abroad, but one thing I would change would be to travel more around my host country- Australia! I only visited three cities throughout Australia and wish I did more cities here rather than traveling abroad.

Great study abroad experience!

My TEAN study abroad was so much fun and so well organized! There was a lot of on-site support for students through the university and through TEAN and I felt very safe the entire time I was in Sydney. It was also very easy to make friends through TEAN's orientation in Cairns and it was so fun going to the different TEAN events in Sydney throughout the semester. TEANs orientation in Cairns was a highlight of the semester for me and automatically made TEAN stand out amongst other study abroad companies for me. I would highly recommend studying abroad with TEAN, especially in Sydney with the University of New South Wales. There were so many events and ways to meet people through UNSW and the proximity to the beach was amazing!! The only bad thing about my experience was that there were a lot of cockroaches in our apartment, but we worked with UNSW to get them to spray down our apartment with a special cockroach-killing spray. We had them come in like once a month and it got better after that.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I tried kangaroo meat and crocodile meat during orientation in Cairns and it was sooo interesting hahahah. I definitely didn't order it again during the semester but it was fun to try!

An Unforgettable Experience Down Under!

I just got back from my semester in Sydney, and I am already reminiscing on my experience and planning my visit back! One thing that I loved about Sydney (and Australia in general) is how there is something for everyone. As someone who loves to do a little bit of everything, Sydney was the perfect location for me! It offered the city, beach, mountains, and everything in between within under 2 hours. As someone who loves to get active and be outdoors, I felt that Sydney was the perfect place for me to explore. The public transportation was also amazing and very easy to navigate which was super helpful as a student. My housing accommodation was a 15 minute walk to campus, and otherwise very central to everything! It was so nice to be a 3 minute walk to the shopping center and have the ability to grab groceries to/from any of my daily endeavors. The city of Sydney was safe, clean, and I experienced nothing but positive interactions with locals. Even though Australia is an English speaking country, I found Sydney to be very international, and because it is so much closer to Asia than the United States, I was exposed to a lot of new foods and people which was super cool! Aside from all of these amazing aspects of my abroad experience, the only downside would be the education differences I experienced at the University of Sydney. This was not so much "bad" as it was different. I definitely had to adjust to the academic system in Australia and it took a little getting used to for me to feel more confident in my academics. My roommates and I all were definitely a little bit shocked when we weren't receiving the high grades we were used to receiving at our home universities, and it was challenging at times to balance having a memorable time abroad with also focusing on academics. As someone who cares deeply about doing well in school, this was the only difficult adjustment for me while I was abroad, however I was still able to do very well and my professors were very accommodating and understanding when I expressed concerns. I would absolutely recommend this program to anyone who has been considering Australia for any reason! In my opinion, it is so worthwhile to be able to study abroad here because it is so far away and harder to travel to for only a couple of weeks- it was so awesome to stay for 5 whole months! It was also great to be stationed on the other side of the world and made traveling to other countries (New Zealand, Fiji, South East Asia, etc) a lot more attainable than from the U.S. I am truly so grateful for my time abroad and will cherish the memories I have forever!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take advantage of every opportunity you get! Also, attend the events that your program plans for you, they are super cool and included in your program fee, so its great to take advantage of!
Pros
  • Location
  • English Speaking Country
  • Amazing Transportation
Cons

A "summer" at Sydney

This program is excellent if you want to travel but are afraid of complete language or cultural differences. Sydney is a massive city with people from all over the world, allowing me to taste all their cultures while taking advantage of the great view of nature. The city is very populated and crowded but relatively safe and clean. There are multiple large shopping centers and restructures everywhere. There is no need to worry about transportation; public transportation is well-structured there, and you can use Google or Apple Maps to see which ride you need to take. The train can take you to farther cities, but you would need a car if you want to go into the mountains or the fields. Cities outside of Sydney are very small-town-like, but public transportation is still there. They give a beautiful coastal view in a quieter setting and local experiences. I also recommend traveling to New Zealand for a week while you are in Sydney. The flight is only about three to four hours. New Zealand's city is less populated, but the lake and green islands outside the city are where the true beauty lies.
There is so much I want to share about my six weeks, but none of the words would be as good as experiencing it for yourselves. Australia has both, whether you are a city or a nature person. And if you are not satisfied with it, take advantage of the fact that you have already flown halfway across the globe and travel to neighboring countries.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take a good and comfortable pair of shoes because Sydney is a very walkable city for you to explore.
If you want to do some shopping, check out Australia's Tourist Tax Refund policy and see how you can use it.
Use Google Maps rather than Apple Maps. Apple Maps does not show all the stores, while Google Maps shows it and the comments.
There are places with low light pollution, and it is great for stargazing.
Visite Newtown because it is the complete opposite of downtown Sydney while only 20 minutes away (by bus) from downtown Sydney.
If you are only going to be there for a month or so, I recommend not wasting any day indoors because you will experience something new every time you step out.
Pros
  • City life while not far from nature
  • Convenient lifestyle (walkable city and public transportation)
  • Multi-culture experience
Cons
  • Different charging plug than the United States (make sure to get an adopter or an Australian plug before you go)
  • Not many group events (This could be because my summer program is shorter. There was a group surfing event, but I wish there were one we could go into the wild with the other students)
  • It was too short

The most amazing semester of my life!!!

I could not have wished for a better experience if I tried! I was the only student studying in Australia from my home university so I was a bit nervous going into it, but after TEAN's orientation I already made incredible friends and felt excited and much more comfortable starting my experience abroad. TEAN's program coordinators were fantastic and made all the logistics so easy. Sydney was an amazing city and I am so grateful I had the chance to live there, I look forward to traveling back one day :)

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I went skydiving, bungee jumping, and flew a plane!! All major checks off my bucket list!
Pros
  • Adventure Tourism
  • Amazing public transportation
  • Extremely friendly culture
Cons
  • you'll want to live there forever
  • you'll make incredible friends and then have to leave them after the program is over
  • you'll wish your home city had half the public transportation that Sydney does

Best experience of my life

I am not kidding when I say that this has been the best experience of my life, in every aspect, Sydney and TEAN made me feel like I had a new home. The freedom that you can experience in this city is unique, from wandering by yourself across countless hikes to going out with your friends to enjoy the night views of the harbor. This semester was an all-rounded experience, academically The University of Sydney was challenging, but very gratifying after completing it, while socially I had the pleasure of meeting friends who became part of my family. Adding to this, as a student-athlete I had the opportunity to play high-level competitive soccer on the University’s team.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
My favorite place was the Bondi to Coogee Walk, since the first time I did it I felt a strong connection to that place. Every time I had to clear my mind I went for a walk there, full of natural beauty provided by the ocean, the sand, and grass fields. Worth checking out.
Pros
  • Very safe and secure city.
  • Cheaper than the US.
  • Full of nature.
Cons
  • Expensive flights.
  • Time-zone difference.

Macquarie University

I had the most incredible semester studying at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. The TEAN crew were so helpful, with an orientation trip and lots of local excursions to explore the area and meet other students also studying abroad. It was through them that I got to meet one of my closest friends and now roommate! The leaders were always available to answer questions and provide support, even staff in other cities would help provide travel tips for me when visiting another city. In addition, Sydney was such a stunning place. I was not only able to explore some gorgeous locations, I got to connect with locals and pick up some lessons of the culture (and some slang) along the way. Overall, I would say this experience made me more confident in my own independence, a lesson that has been valuable even after I returned. I cannot recommend this experience enough, ever since I got home I've been counting down the days until I can go back.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I was able to get my scuba certification! It was honestly something I never expected to do, because I have a fear of the open ocean, but being surrounded by some of the most incredible marine life in the world, it is hard not to fall in love.
Pros
  • Nature: from the ocean to the jungle to the mountains, Australia has some of the best to offer
  • Amazing food, in particular the Asian food there is so good
  • The locals are so friendly
Cons
  • This university is particular was a bit far from the city, and not being able to drive it took quite a while to get places
  • University culture is very different from the US (felt less social and more business, a lot of students live at home), and at times it was hard to socialize with the locals

Best Experience Ever!

Choosing to study abroad was the best decision I ever made. I truly believe this is something everyone should do! TEAN made this experience unforgettable for me; we traveled to the Great Barrier Reef, explored our host cities and had an incredible team of people supporting us the whole time. If I ever needed help with anything or wanted a recommendation for a great restaurant, my advisor was super nice and always helpful! You will not regret choosing to embark on a journey like this and TEAN is a great organization to do it with!
