Growing in Copenhagen

The first few days in a new country by yourself are rough. You’re jet lagged, overwhelmed, and trying to remember all the new, important information you need to know about living abroad. CIEE did a very good job helping us get slowly acclimated to Copenhagen in a way that wasn’t too overwhelming, but I still felt like I could dive right into what the city had to offer. They were very organized and professional during the orientation period, and they gave us lots of people we could talk to if we were feeling like a fish out of water.

What was your funniest moment?
Denmark is a known biking country. My group and I had a wild time trying to navigate the busy city on bikes for the first time, all while trying not to crash into one another and locals.

Trust me...study abroad with CIEE in Copenhagen!

I absolutely loved this program. This was an invaluable experience and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested. The planned excursions were so much fun, and the program staff were very helpful and kind. There is so much to do in Copenhagen, you will never be bored. One of my favorite parts about the program was the fact that the city was extremely bikeable and walkable. There are so many options for things to do, and there are tons of different neighborhoods to explore. This city is perfect for those who are looking for a wonderful adventure. Do this program!

Global Internship in Copenhagen

I spent the summer in Copenhagen doing the Summer Global Internship and it was a wonderful experience. I learned so much about the Danish work culture through both the Internship Course and the Internship itself. I got to spend additional time on excursions and extracurricular activities with CIEE Staff, and these were great experiences with welcoming and kind people. I think this is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in learning more about themselves and engaging and learning about different cultures.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
It is intimidating to travel to a new country and experience a culture and language you are not used to. But, it is 100% worth it. Put yourself out there, get out of your comfort zone, meet new people, and adventure around as much as you can. When you get to the end of the program you will have no regrets because you will grow so much as a person and learn so much about yourself.
Pros
  • Amazing Opportunties
  • Welcoming Staff
  • Beautiful City
Cons
  • Expensive

The perfect experience

I loved my experience working abroad through CIEE. It gave me a perfect experience to encourage me to move abroad post grad and have confidence in my skills. I was able to meet lifelong friends and make a connection with the workers at CIEE so that I felt comfortable being in a foreign country. I loved the culture of the city. It is very active and is full of people biking, walking, running, and even just sitting outside. It encouraged me to be outside way more than I was used to back in the US.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Follow food events online and attend as many festivals, special events, etc as possible and meet as many new people as you can.
Pros
  • Welcoming for english speakers
  • Beautiful, active city
  • Great celebration culture

A Life-Changing Experience

The CIEE study abroad program in Denmark was a journey that exceeded all my expectations. From the moment I set foot in this country, I was enveloped in a sense of warmth that I will carry with me forever. The program organizers meticulously crafted an itinerary that seamlessly blended academic rigor with cultural immersion. What truly set this program apart, was the unwavering encouragement from both faculty and students. To anyone considering studying abroad in Denmark, I wholeheartedly recommend this program! It’s a transformative journey of self-discovery and cultural exchange :)

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Jameson and I ordered hapsdog hotdogs… nestled in a warm toasted bun are these plump and juicy sausages that peek out of the top. They have a playful presentation and are delicious. If you find yourself in Denmark seeking out a hapsdog hotdog is essential to Danish cuisine.
Pros
  • Safety
  • English-friendly

CIEE January in Copenhagen

Dreary, dark, and gloomy were the first things that came to mind when I imagined Copenhagen, Denmark in January. Although the temperatures did not get very warm, Danish Hygge and lots of baked goods made my J-term abroad a wonderful experience. The food was consistently delicious, I did not have one bad meal in Copenhagen. There are a wide variety of bar scenes, so everyone can find a spot to unwind that suits their 'vibe.' Additionally, it is an extremely safe place to visit, and one can travel independently without fear, even in the early hours of the morning. There is shopping galore, from big name-brand stores like Magasin Du Nord to grungy thrift stores like Episode -- and most offer either a student discount, or a foreign discount with a passport. There is a photo op at every corner, but especially in the iconic Nyhavn, which is also home to a plethora of fine dining. Arts and culture are also abundant in Copenhagen. Most museums offer a student discount with a student ID, and are a great place to ride out foul weather while also learning more about the culture of the country. There are also opportunities to attend theatre and opera showcases. I attended two operas during my month in Copenhagen, and was charmed by the architecture and the stage craftsmanship. It is a great spot to visit if you are an introverted individual, as the Danish culture is not very 'chatty' – nobody is going to initiate small talk with you. However, I found that if I asked a question, they were willing to answer it and give me recommendations. Overall, I enjoyed my time, but I do wish that I had more of an opportunity to meet local people who were not involved with the CIEE program.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice would be to take time every evening to plan your next day. In the afternoon after class, you should have a destination spot where you want to end up, and then make your way there, but stop along the way!
Pros
  • Never a bad meal, I was blown away with the quality of food here.
  • Monday-Thursday class schedule allows for a lot of free time
  • Copenhagen is very easy to navigate
Cons
  • Lack of communication from the CIEE staff -- the schedule was often not communicated until the day before, making planning difficult
  • Museums are not all that interesting in Copenhagen, often not worth the price (even with a student discount)
  • Even though almost everyone in Denmark can speak English, they speak Danish on a day-to-day basis, so it is hard to break into a conversation or make small talk with Danish natives

Summer Abroad in Copenhagen

Such an amazing experience in Copenhagen with this program! The classes were engaging, the staff was fantastic in getting us involved with cultural events, and the city felt easy to explore. I felt safe walking around on my own as a young woman, even at night. Almost everything was under a 30 minute walk from my housing, so I could easily roll out of bed and head to a museum or bakery. While the area is expensive, there were so many free cultural events to do and beautiful parks to hang out in. Overall, a great location to explore and a supportive program to help you during the experience.

CIEE Open Campus Block Program in Copenhagen, Denmark

CIEE is an amazing study-abroad program. This program focused so heavily on students engaging in cultural immersion activities and encouraged us to really get involved in the culture around us. We got out of the classroom a lot and did a bunch of co-curricular activities to experience as much as we could. The staff was so kind and helpful, they really care about their students. The campus itself is beautiful and really felt like a home base for us students. The open campus block program is so unique and really allows students to see so much of the world and experience so much.

Pros
  • Wonderful Staff
  • Variety of coursework
  • Safe and comfortable accommodations
