I love ORA. In fact, I've been attending ORA for the past three summers: Oxford, UK in 2016 and 2017, and London, UK in 2018. Every time was unique. The weeks spent with ORA were always the highlight of each summer, and were kind of a "pre-university" preparation.
Concerning my personal experience, the first time I attended ORA, at first, I was all nervous and frustrated about how I'm going to make friends and live far from my parents all on my own; but as soon as I arrived to the campus, where safety was a priority, the staff was very welcoming, helpful and friendly, and I connected with many different people. I learned a lot about different cultures and societies. The food wasn't terrible but we were allowed to get our own so it was fine by me. The campus was amazingly beautiful; the dorms in Oxford were mostly twin rooms, where you had to tidy it up and the staff would come and just clean it, whereas in London all the rooms in the dorm were single rooms, and the staff would come tidy it up as well as clean it. The courses were entertaining, new, different than what you take in school, and certainly very helpful. It helped me increased my knowledge and I use the information acquired in these courses very frequently in my every day life. The course went by too fast and everyone wanted it to last more (one more week for most of us).
If you want to spend the best summer, don't hesitate to attend ORA.

P.S: I'm attending ORA once again in London this summer for 4 weeks.

What would you improve about this program?

The program went by too fast every time I attended ORA; I recommend it to be longer as in a 3-week course for example.

This was a one of a kind experience; I have met so many people from various backgrounds and cultures and many life long friends I still consistently keep in contact with! I attended the Session in London at Goodenough campus which began on 3rd of July. The course I uptook (Business & entreprise) was equally very well taught and resourceful for what I want to study later. The group discussion was dynamic, and it was so interesting to hear what others from diverse cultures and perspectives had to contribute. The staff were all very friendly, and even though the nervousness was there at first I was at ease and comfortable within the first day; the atmosphere felt very pleasant and the activities organized during free time, such as the Aladdin play was equally very amusing. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience as it was unforgettable; I gained a sense of independence, teamwork skills as well as leadership skills, and discipline. I highly recommend this programme for anyone wishing to be enriched culturally and academically; it was an amazing time.

Why did you choose this program?

The main reason why I chose the New Perspectives Course from Oxford Royale Academy was because a friend of mine knew some people who had already attended it and had loved it. My friend thought that I would like it too and told me about the possibility of going with her. I was really excited with the idea, and after some research, I decided that Oxford Royale Academy (ORA) was the perfect summer school for me.

What did your program university assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

In what concerns the transfers from the airports to the campus, ORA had everything organized to help the students especially those who were travelling alone. The ORA website has detailed information about everything – including this aspect and other things such as the laundry facilities.

Another important thing is that the course provides the meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and the necessary books for the classes. However, students should bring their own computer (otherwise, it will be difficult for them to do their essays and presentations) and common class material (pens, pencils, etc.)

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

For someone who is thinking about going on this program, it is really important to look for information on ORA’s website because they have a lot of useful advice there. You can ask questions if you want, which I found really helpful. I suggest to everyone who’s going to ORA Summer School to bring some snacks, because although they provide you the meals, most people like to eat something between, say, lunch and dinner.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

During the week, the days were very similar. We had classes in the morning, and in the afternoon, there were classes three times a week and a lot of fun activities to do. One of the most popular activities was the homework club where students had the chance to work alone or in groups. There was usually time to go outside, or to the city with friends, but if students had work to do or just did not want to go to Oxford, they could stay in the campus.

The weekend was a bit different, because there were no classes. In my session, we went to London on Saturday and had activities and time to work on Sunday.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

ORA summer school was my first experience abroad, and on account of that, I was really excited and anxious at the same time. My biggest fear was if I would be able to adapt to a different country, to different teachers, colleagues, and to a different lifestyle, in a different community.

The truth is that I was so well received that I quickly adapted to everything. The teachers were really good, nice, and were always on hand to help us. About my classmates, I realized that we were all in the same situation, and that we all feared the same things. So, we were like a family for those two weeks, we tried to do our best, we supported each other, and this brought us even closer!

What is your favorite travel memory?

I recently traveled to South Africa for three months to carry out a research project at The Africa Centre just outside the small town of Mtubatuba (north of Durban on the Eastern Coast).

Over the three months there I carried out secondary data analysis of a WHO study into people living over 60 with HIV/AIDS. It was an amazing experience to work in the community and gather research that would hopefully be useful to the Department of Health and help shape future public health directives.

Each day we worked in the office and as soon as 5pm hit we sped off down a long and twisty road near the game park to the beach. One day on the way back from the hospital we pulled over and watched a lion for an hour whilst another time we got far too close to an elephant for comfort.

It was an amazing experience and I can’t wait to return in a few years as a qualified doctor to work in the rural hospitals there.

How have you changed/grown since working for ORA?

I think I have definitely become more confident teacher as I have delivered lessons to a wide variety of students. Meeting new people is a huge part of working at ORA and the opportunity to talk to and learn from people from different countries and backgrounds is an amazing experience.

Teaching to a class where over 25 languages are spoken is daunting but over the summer I picked up new ways to explain ideas and convey learning outcomes that bridged the language gap.

The experience has definitely made me a better teacher all round.

What is the best story you've heard from a returning ORA student?

Each ORA student has so many wonderful stories to tell. I think the really wonderful thing is that many return each year to progress onto a further course or learn new things.

Students have such a wonderful opportunity at ORA to live in the halls at Oxford University, explore the city and make new friends. I think what they all appreciate is being treated like proper university students having new and exciting lessons taught within the historic buildings.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being successful?

I think being able to communicate is the biggest factor. It sounds cheesy and like one of those management buzz words, but if you can’t communicate your ideas well to your peers you will get nowhere.

My experience working both in an office and on the wards as a medical student has really emphasized the importance of good communication to me. The ability to work in a team is crucial.

To be successful you ultimately have to inspire those in your team to strive for success and this involves having fantastic communication skills.

You have to be able to listen and take on board what others are saying - even if you don’t agree - and reach a compromise that will allow the team to work successfully.
