SAI invites students to experience the sweep of Italian history by spending a semester or summer in the heart of Rome! In partnership with John Cabot University (JCU), SAI offers students the opportunity to pursue an exceptional academic and cultural education in one of the most inspiring cities in the world. JCU offers a US-accredited liberal arts curriculum taught entirely in English and the school draws professors from around the world. The Business school at JCU also carried an AACSB accreditation due to its excellence. Semester and summer programs offer students the option to enroll in a wide range of rigorous, elective courses.

SAI oversees and coordinates all aspects of student enrollment, including application processing, course selection and credit, housing, visa advising, student health insurance, and transcripts. In addition, SAI provides comprehensive student services, from the moment of application, through the on-site experience, until students return home.

The best decision I ever made was choosing to study abroad. SAI made it easy and helped me out greatly when I needed it. School was important but I could never have learned life experiences like I did moving to a new country without knowing a soul. I'm still very close to the friends I met there even though we are all over the US now. And we've all taken a reunion trip back! I definitely recommended SAI for anyone and everyone!

SAI is a great program to study abroad with. They are very involved in getting settled when you first arrive. They also are always available to help you with whatever you need when you have problems or questions. I have no complaints at all about SAI.

SAI provided a number of free trips and activities, such as a Tuscany weekend trip and cooking classes, that helped make my time abroad fun and exciting while saving money and experiencing things I would not have normally experienced. It was nice to be a part of a smaller group of students within the school and to participate in all of these trips and activities with them. It helped to give me a good group of friends from the beginning in a place where I did not know anyone. In addition, the SAI staff was wonderful. They were always friendly, welcoming, and extremely helpful. They were there to help out with everything from getting me medicine for a cold or a good deal on a taxi to a simple restaurant recommendation. They helped me feel more comfortable and at-home in a very new and unfamiliar environment. I do not have a bad thing to say about SAI. They truly helped make my study abroad experience so amazing and it would not have been what it was without them.

I really appreciated SAI for several reasons while I was abroad. I have bad luck and had several health complications (food poisoning and strep throat...just to name a few) but my program coordinators took good care of me. I got all the medical attention I needed and my health insurance covered the cost. The onsite coordinators became friends throughout the semester. I could not have been happier with my housing location. It was a beautiful and charming apartment with easy access to the tram as well as close proximity to a train station--which was awesome when going to the airport for weekend trips. I liked SAI because they provided me with the support I needed and offered a lot of fun activities and excursions. At the same time, I was on my own in the city to explore and grow as a person.

What would you improve about this program?

Some of the courses I took, I would not take if I had a do-over. The language barrier with the professor (class taught in English) was really stifling to our learning.

What is the best SAI apartment to live in and why?

Sai offers premium housing every semester that offers a more central location and often newer interiors. It does cost extra money, but those are the best apartments. However, all the apartments are great! Sai does a great job of getting apartments in the area and they're all nice. The farther you get from JCU usually the larger the apartments. The closer you are normally it's slightly less space...

Where were your apartments located relative to the school?

Apartments are located all over the neighborhood Trastevere which is where John Cabot is located. They're all totally different and some are two blocks away while others are a little over a mile. My apartment was one of the farther ones, but I was still able to walk there in fifteen minutes without taking any public transportation. Everyone had between 4-5 people total living in their house. How has this experience impacted your future?

Ryan: My study abroad experience at John Cabot University has greatly impacted my future both personally and professionally. After traveling to so many beautiful countries and experiencing different cultures, I know that I want to build a global business career.

Personally, having the opportunity to travel to over 10 countries has pushed me outside of my comfort zone and has taught me more about myself than I could ever imagine learning in a classroom. It has taught me to be an incredible problem solver because I learned how to navigate through foreign cities and communicate with the locals.

I had no choice but to figure out how to get around and communicate with locals and that provided me with great problem solving skills. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that allows you to meet amazing friends and makes you aware of how big the world really is.

What is one piece of advice you'd give future SAI students?

Ryan: If I had to give one piece of advice to future SAI students I would tell them to push go outside of your comfort zone. Do things that you never thought you would ever do. Be grateful for this time in your life that so few get to experience.

The time that you are abroad will be the fastest 4 months of your life, enjoy it! Open yourself up to new experiences and all of the wonderful people around you. I did not know anyone coming into the program and I walked away with friends from all over the country. Your time abroad is all about you! It is a time for you to grow, learn, and have experiences that will be lifelong memories.

Tell us about an experience you had that you could not have had at home

Ryan: Being able to travel every weekend is an experience that I would not have if I stayed at my home University. It is cheap to travel throughout Europe and it gives you the opportunity to travel to so many beautiful countries around Italy. The students in our program traveled every weekend after we got to know each other and it is one of the best parts about study abroad.

You are able to meet locals, try delicious new food, and go to amazing historical sights. During my spring break week, I was able to travel to Munich, Vienna , Prague, and Barcelona. It was incredible to see so many countries in such a short period of time, this was something that I could never do if I was still in the United States.

Why did you decide to study abroad with SAI?

Ryan: My home university has a partnership with SAI so I decided to apply because I wanted to apply through a program. After looking up SAI, it was clear that their program was top-notch because they provide opportunities for students to experience the culture and help support you throughout your time abroad.

SAI has been a huge help to me throughout the semester and have always been there when I had a question or needed assistance. They planned fun events and trips for us to go on and some of my best memories were on SAI planned trips. I highly recommend applying through SAI; you won’t regret it!

If you could do-over one thing, what would it be?

Ryan: If I could do-over one thing it would have been to plan out my trips in advance. I scheduled a lot of my trips last minute, which made the trips more expensive and I could not go everywhere that I wanted. The semester is short so it is unlikely you will be able to go everywhere that you want but it is important to plan it all out in the beginning.

If I could do it over again, I would write down all of the places that I want to go and coordinate with my friends what weekends we could go during the semester. Plan it out early because it will save you time, money, and frustration!

What is your favorite travel memory?

I was traveling solo through Spain, Malta, and Italy after I completed a semester abroad in Denmark. While in Bergamo, Italy, I became aware that I had forgotten to print my final plane ticket. Since I was traveling with a budget airline, I had to have it printed before arriving at the airport, or else I’d be, charged 50 euro (which I definitely did not have!).

I spent an entire day on the hunt for a public printer, armed with sheer determination and nearly non-existent language skills. Each person I encountered got me a little closer to my goal and I eventually end up at a public university in Citta Alta. I technically wasn’t allowed to print there without a school ID, but a kind student overheard my troubles and offered to use their ID to get me onto a computer.

The experience was nerve-wracking and frustrating while it was happening, but the end result and my later reflection have reinforced one of the key lessons from my travels: that humans are inherently good and most will help each other, given the opportunity.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

SAI has allowed me to sharpen my skills across so many disciplines! From communication to data analysis, I’ve had the great pleasure of interacting with many facets of the company.

I’ve also learned a great deal about the study abroad industry. Coming from a “volunteer abroad” background, I really didn’t know much about study abroad outside of my personal experience. I feel so privileged to be learning from my fabulous colleagues at SAI in an environment that fosters growth.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

I’ve heard this story a couple of times and I feel so excited each time I do: students that feel so connected to their host city, and loved their academic experiences so much that they decide to return to their host school for their masters.

It’s not for everyone, but it feels wonderful to have been a part of that student’s journey in finding their place in the world. If they had never studied abroad, they wouldn’t have known!

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

That’s so difficult – I want to do them all!

If I had to choose one, it would be our program at Sant’Anna Institute in Sorrento. The town itself is gorgeous and the historic campus building has been recently renovated, giving students a mix of traditional and modern.

The courses at Sant’Anna Institute are filled with field learning – what other marine bio class takes you snorkeling in the Mediterranean? They firmly believe in learning by doing, which sounds much better than sitting in the lecture hall!

The other draw to Sorrento, for me, is their credit-bearing internship program. When I was in school, I was constantly looking for internship opportunities to gain real, professional experience, and I would have loved to find one that also offers academic credit. It’s a really great way to accomplish two goals at once!

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

Our team is unique in that we are small but mighty! Each person goes above and beyond in their role to make sure we are able to deliver the best possible experiences to our students. It makes our jobs so much easier knowing that everyone is working towards the good of the whole.

The genuine care from our staff easily translates into our interactions with students – they know that we are here for them and their families every step of the way! I feel especially proud anytime we receive positive feedback, whether it is flowers, a card, or just a kind email.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

I believe SAI is successful because we are intentional in our programs. We carefully select our locations and partner schools, allowing us to become fluent in all aspects of our programs.

Each program has a specific Admissions Counselor that intimately understands the ins and outs of their program. This helps so much when speaking with students and parents, as we are all “experts” in our own areas.
