Diversity & Inclusion

CEA CAPA provides, in conjunction with Diversity Abroad, Destination Guides which provide resources and tips for Black/African-American students, Latinx students, Asian American students, and all other students of color.
Through our personalized advising, CEA CAPA takes steps to understand the needs of a diversity of student identities like the LGBTQIA+ community. In addition to diversity and identity training, CEA CAPA leadership engage in continuous department level project work to identify and revise policies and practices using the appropriate Justice, Equity, Diversity or Inclusion lens as a frame to reduce bias and barriers that impact students, faculty, and staff. CEA CAPA is intentional in elevating diverse student voices and providing a platform for a broad array of identities to share their experiences abroad. The CEA CAPA World Blog promotes stories and personal experiences from the perspectives of diverse student bloggers and vloggers.
CEA CAPA is willing and able to assist students with learning disabilities and physical disabilities. Students are requested to disclose disabilities through the application health forms as part of their application and in discussion with their application advisor or program manager. The earlier CEA CAPA is made aware of learning or physical disabilities the better we can work with the student, institution, and overseas team to tailor an Individualized Education Program if necessary to support the student.

Students are often given reusable bags and water bottles upon arrival to limit single plastic use

Students are provided with instructions for acquiring transportation passes to promote use of public transportation rather than taxis

CEACAPA study abroad was amazing!!!

I loved every single day while I was studying abroad in Barcelona! CEACAPA made it such a smooth transition by helping with the visa application process, organizing pickup from the airport, placing us in housing around the city, and holding orientation meetings that helped give insight on the city so best navigate our experience. I studied in a study center with other US students which was very helpful in meeting new people to travel with. I am so thankful for all of their help and the amazing opportunity that I was given to experience new parts of the world.

My unforgettable experience with CEA Capa

My experience in Barcelona with CEA Capa was unforgettable. It was one of the best decisions of my life. I had the experience of immersing myself in a new cultures and meeting new people. I traveled to 13 different countries over my 4 months abroad, and it was incredible. I learned so much--I gained independence and learned to adapt to new and unfamiliar situations, and became more open-minded and self-reliant. I chose student housing, where I was in an apartment building with all CEA Capa students. I loved all of my roommates as well as everyone in my apartment building and we planned trips together and would always go to class together! I met friends for life, friends that I still talk to every single day! CEA Capa is helpful and supportive in times of need, and I am glad I chose a program where I felt a sense of community.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-racking moment for me was my first day abroad. I had never travelled internationally alone before, so leaving the US and moving to Spain was very scary for me. When I landed in Barcelona, I felt clueless and anxious, but I was immediately met with CEA Capa employees who guided me through the airport and brought me to my new apartment, where I met my new roommates. I immediately clicked with my roommates and we became friends instantly!
Pros
  • Experiencing new cultures
  • Faculty/Staff/Professors
  • Sense of Community
Cons
  • Taking the metro daily
  • Expensive

I Am Because I Did

Spain was the best place I could have studied abroad. There are incredible things to do and see in Barcelona such as night clubbing, going out to eat late, and sightseeing with some of the best art in the world. Spain has many different places to visit within it that are diverse. Cadaquez, north of Barcelona was my favorite place I visited and one of the most beautiful places in the world. The local people I met treated me like family. The people are kind and know the balance of work life, and Spanish time is nothing like American time; everything is late, and that is considered on time. I want to go back there to live one day! A word of advice: try to use your Spanish as much as possible. Put yourself outside of your comfort zone and feel uncomfortable. When you use English and they try to accommodate you using English, they often feel somewhat embarrassed, and they should not be embarrassed in their own country for trying to speak your language. Speak theirs as much as you can out of courtesy. This experience changed my entire life, teaching me things about myself (strengths and weaknesses) that I would otherwise have never learned. I grew, and you will too. It's worth the money.

What would you improve about this program?
Most people in this program were from either Toulane or Cal Poly SLO, and most people came with their friends. I found that there were very few people who came abroad solo, and social groups were already pre established because of that. While I made great friends in the program with the people from other universities, there was not much diversity.
Pros
  • Spain is incredibly beautiful and there are endless areas to visit within Spain.
  • The people are kind and loving
  • Public transportation is extremely easy
Cons
  • It is hot as heck during the summertime
  • Pick pocketing is huge in Barcelona
  • Barcelona beaches are man-made, the gorgeous ones are about an hour or 2 north or south

Best program - best staff - best semester of my life!!

I cannot recommend CEA CAPA in Barcelona more! Seriously this was the best semester of my life. I absolutely loved my classes - my professors were intelligent, kind, helpful, and engaging, and it was so incredible being able to meet students from all over the U.S. who I still keep in contact with a year later! I learned more in some of my classes abroad than I do at my home university due to the super small class sizes and very hands-on projects. I did the Global Business Consulting program, and I worked on a semester-long project helping a small Barcelona-based SaaS company think about global expansion. It seriously was the most enriching experience I have ever had in a class (and my team won the competition!). CEA CAPA in Barcelona is wonderful and if you are considering it at all - GO!!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would go to ALL of the CEA-sponsored events!
Pros
  • Great classes
  • Super cool students do it
  • No Friday classes!!
Cons
  • Housing is not incredible, but its doable
  • The CEA staff that I dealt with before going abroad were not the nicest, but I think this was a unique experience

CEA CAPA Education Abroad in Barcelona

Studying abroad in Barcelona, Spain with CEA CAPA changed my life! I am so passionate about studying abroad and encourage everyone to do it! I studied abroad in the Summer of 2023 for four weeks. Barcelona was the perfect location for me because I enjoy the nightlife and the social scene of a city as well as the beach! I was enrolled in MKT 420, International Marketing, and learned so much about Spain's socio-economic landscape. I met the best of friends from all over the country, and we still keep in touch today. I was fully immersed in Spanish culture and tradition. This was so unique for me because before this trip I had never been overseas before. I grew so much as a person by navigating a brand-new country by myself. I encourage everyone to take this opportunity if you can, you will not regret it!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
The most unfamiliar thing I ate was octopus tentacles! I love fried calamari, so I thought it would be similar. But this was an entire steamed octopus. My friends were joking that its tentacles were going to get stuck to our throats when we swallowed! This was the most interesting food I tried, and it was pretty tasty!
Pros
  • Meet amazing new people
  • Explore a new city and its culture
  • Experience education overseas
Cons
  • Traveling alone is scary at first
  • The language barrier is a challenge, but you learn so much

An Amazing Experience with CEA CAPA

I recently had the pleasure of participating in the CEA CAPA program in Barcelona, and I can confidently say it was an incredible experience that exceeded my expectations.

From the moment I arrived, the staff at CEA demonstrated an unparalleled level of support. They were not only welcoming but also readily available to answer any questions I had, making the transition into the program seamless. Their dedication to ensuring a positive experience for every participant truly stood out.

One of the highlights of my time with CEA CAPA was the opportunity to try new things. The program encourages a spirit of exploration, and I found myself stepping out of my comfort zone to engage in activities I wouldn't have considered before. This added an exciting and enriching dimension to my overall experience.

Meeting new people is always a significant part of any program, and with CEA, I not only met incredible individuals but also formed what I know will be lifelong friendships. The sense of camaraderie among participants was fostered by the inclusive and welcoming environment created by both the staff and the program itself.

What sets CEA CAPA apart is the array of activities included in the tuition. I wholeheartedly recommend taking advantage of these offerings. The activities were not only enjoyable but also provided a unique way to immerse myself in the culture of the location. From cultural excursions to recreational events, each activity added a layer of richness to my experience.

In conclusion, my time with CEA CAPA was nothing short of amazing. The supportive staff, the opportunity to try new things, the formation of meaningful connections, and the diverse range of included activities all contributed to an unforgettable experience. I wholeheartedly recommend CEA CAPA to anyone seeking an immersive and enriching program abroad.

Great Experience in BCN!

I had a great time with this program, as CEA/CAPA did a great job of orchestrating all aspects of this study abroad experience. Classes were interesting but not crazy tough, the city is one of my favorite in Europe, and the housing was nice, safe, and clean (though I did have to pay extra-- I am not sure about regular housing). I volunteered through the program and found it to be one of the most meaningful experiences I had during this time. Only complaint is that it is all American students, so my Spanish did not approve as much as I wish it had- but if you make a point of it, you will definitely be able to do better!

Pros
  • Great social scene and nightlife
  • Beautiful city with a beach and great parks
  • Unbelievable history and museums
Cons
  • Very touristy in warmer months, so lots of pickpocketing
  • Not able to stay with a host family during my time
  • Not studying in an actual Spanish university

Study Abroad in Barcelona!

I had the best time of my life studying abroad and Barcelona was the perfect place! I loved how Barcelona had so much to explore in the city and around it, it was also near the beach which I loved, and was a place where you were really able to immerse yourself into their culture. CEA offered a lot of support and guidance throughout the program and my experience would not have been the same without this program. While being in Barcelona, I was able to explore so much more than I thought I knew about the city and was able to learn things beyond what I could have imagined. I was also able to learn and grow within myself more than I would have thought. Being abroad, you don't realize how much you can really test yourself and see how adaptable you are. It was also the biggest culture shock I could have experienced but in the best way possible. From things as what time people eat their meals, to what time people go out, to what mannerisms are appropriate and so much more, it was the best experience trying to live out a different lifestyle and learn about theirs.

Pros
  • Housing was awesome
  • So much to explore
  • Freedom to go and do what you want
