Atlantis Program in Barcelona

This was my first time traveling to Spain, and I absolutely loved it! My group instantly bonded, and Atlantis provided both excursions and spectacular meals at restaurants around Barcelona, which had some of the best architecture I have ever seen. Our residency was also located in the heart of Barcelona! Every night, we were able to explore another part of Barcelona. This program confirmed that I want to become a physician. If you are considering traveling to Barcelona and want to shadow physicians, I highly recommend it!

Pros
  • Excursions
  • Accommodations
  • Networking

Review of Spain Study Abroad

I believe my experience in Spain was amazing. I was able to meet so many great people on the trip. I was able to connect with students like me and learn from their medical and research experiences. I was able to travel with them and make life-lasting memories. I also had amazing site managers who I learned so much from. They were able to expose me to the culture and answer any questions that I had. Apart from the traveling experience from which I got to see and experience many new things, eat good food, and learn about the country; the shadowing experience was incredible as well. The doctors who I was able to shadow were so nice and so open to teaching. They answered all of my questions and let me stand right next to the OR table. I truly believe this was the most information I was exposed to and was able to learn in a short time span. I believe the trip was planned in a really great and efficient way. I liked how Atlantis incorporated traveling and sightseeing time with shadowing hours. I also really liked how we were able to pick the specialties that we wanted to shadow. I am so grateful for my trip to Spain and hope to travel with Atlantis again and gain more shadowing hours in another country!

Pros
  • Amazing shadowing experience
  • Amazing excursions
  • Great group of people
Cons
  • Too short
  • Expensive

Atlantis in Calatayud, Spain

As someone who speaks Spanish at home, I wanted the chance to immerse myself in patient care in Spanish which is why I chose to shadow abroad in Spain. Completing this was made so easy with Atlantis and also surpassed by expectations. I got to see not only specialties I was interested in but also some I hadn't even considered such as surgery. This experience has just made me more confident that this is the career path that I want to pursue. (PS: Knowing Spanish is not required but can be helpful!)

Pros
  • Independence
  • Wide Range of Specialities

Great Professional Development

Being in Spain over the summer was an amazing experience socially (meeting locals and fellow students) as well as professionally (hands-on experience working in the field I want to pursue). I would highly recommend this opportunity for any who likes to travel and who wants to further develop their career. The program also offers a great way to network with fellow peers and industry experts. The quality of life was also quite high with amazing housing facilities, curated group outings, and meals at local restaurants!

Life changing

Atlantis has been an amazing experience. I went to Valladolid, Spain. I learned so much in my two weeks in Spain with Atlantis and got opportunities I would not have gotten where I am from until later in my schooling. I would really recommend it. The first week went slow because you are getting used to a new city and culture, but when it come to the second week it goes super fast and by the end your sad it went by so fast. I created relationships with people all over the States and even got really close to my doctors. There were sad goodbyes on the last day from everyone, the doctors, fellows, and site manager. I choose to take advantage of my time in Europe and I traveled before my fellowship and I stayed a week after. Would really recommend this experience to perspective medical students.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve racking moment was the train stations in Europe. But once you understand them they are a breeze.

Ferrol, Spain

Beautiful city, beautiful nature, wonderful food, wonderful hospital staff, the Atlantis program in Ferrol had it all! From the beaches to the forest to the restaurants and to the hospital, there was not one thing flawed! When going to Ferrol do not forget your sun screen, hiking boots, and appetite for sea food. The beach at Doninos was the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. The hike in Las Fragas was extraordinary. The food in Ferrol was so delicious, my favorite by far were the zamburinas at the resturant, La Cantina. Zamburinas can only be found in the coast of north western Spain, the region known as Galcia, which makes the eating of these zamburinas a must for any sea food lover. If I ever get the chance to travel to Spain again, I will most definitely have to stop by Galicia!

What would you improve about this program?
I just wished I had all the knowledge about Spain that I do now so that I could have enjoyed my experience to an extent greater than I could have with out the knowledge.

Zaragoza, Spain

I went to Zaragoza Spain, it is the 5th largest city in Spain and it is the capitol of the Aragón region. It was a life changing experience! The city had a big city feel without an overwhelming amount of people. The local people were incredibly friendly, the hospital staff were also incredibly friendly as well and super helpful. Being in such close contact with patients and techniques in the health care system that you wouldn’t see in the states has really opened my horizons to how medical care is given around the world. I still keep in touch with some of the doctors I shadowed! Getting around was super simple with the tram system, everything was about a 5-10 min walk. Our site manager Maria was amazing she handled any stressful situations with ease and easily became our best friend. I highly recommend this trip!

What would you improve about this program?
The housing could have been better, we stayed in a dorm. Air conditioning was spotty but there was great WiFi and the staff was super helpful if you needed help on how to get around or where you could find things.

Atlantis Pontevedra

I did the shadowing program for 4 weeks in Pontevedra, Spain and it was truly life-changing. We were treated practically like residents in the hospital and got to see the surgeries up close and personal, treated like locals in the city, living right by the major plaza, and each of us felt like we built incredible friendships. The excursions were breathtaking and my site manager is one of the best people I’ve met in my life. I recommend this program to anybody, even if they’re unsure they want to do medical school because the experience is incredible and it will tell you for sure if it’s what you want to do. I came in wanting to be an obstetrician and during my obstetrics round, I confirmed that it is exactly what I want to do. I know many people with similar experiences or some who thought they wanted one thing but now they want another. Truly spectacular experience.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would have napped less because there were some days I could have seen more, but instead napped.
