Barcelona, Spain - Language and Culture Program

My experience in Barcelona, Spain has been an amazing opportunity to immerse myself fully in a new culture, people, and language. My day-to-day consists of attending my course at CIEE, participating in class, completing assignments, and exploring the city of Barcelona. Barcelona's scenery is quite unique one day we explore the beaches, various museums, local Spanish restaurants, and nearby cities. I think everyone should have the ability to study abroad, as from my experience I can say it has helped me become more independent and culturally aware. As well as gaining a world perspective, building friendships, and new knowledge in this study abroad program as a first-generation college student.

Pros
  • Friendships
  • Exploring the cities & independence
  • Spanish culture
Cons
  • Housing were a bit further outside from the main city.

The time of my life!

This program was the best decision I have ever made! I met some of the best people, in one of the most beautiful places in Europe. The CIEE staff was supportive and gave you all the resources you may need, without being overbearing. They let you know the risks while also giving you freedom to explore the city. Academics were amazing as well. My professor was truly so knowledgable and made the experience so interesting, I came home feeling like I had really learned something. The actual school was super cute and cozy, it felt like a second home. As for the city itself, there are so many great things about Barcelona. Even in a short month I felt like my Spanish increased greatly, the people were generally kind, and I was never bored. Housing was relatively comfortable and in a fantastic location. I would do this program all over again... I'm highly considering it!

Pros
  • Easy Public Transport
  • Lots of Activities
  • Beautiful landscapes
Cons
  • Exspensive
  • Pick-pocketing
  • Can be overwhelming

So cool. I strongly recommend this program!!!

  • Eat authentic Spanish food
  • Visit World Heritage sites
Cons
  • Can get hot in the summer, but not too bad
  • Some places do not have AC

An Awesome Time

I had the best time meeting people from all over the country, meeting new people in Barcelona, and experiencing life in this city. The CIEE staff was very helpful before and during the program, and there for you for any inconvenience wether big or small. My class was super informative and the professor was wise. Barcelona is such a cool place to study as it has the beach and mountains nearby as well as many fun activities to do. There are tourist attractions to see and other smaller things to do.

Amazing experience!

Studying abroad in Barcelona with CIEE was the best decision I could have made! From the very beginning, the CIEE staff provided us with all the information and support we needed to comfortably transition into our abroad experience. I was able to live in a nice apartment with five of my closest friends in a beautiful and safe neighborhood with lots of locals. CIEE also did a great job of offering tons of activities and excursions every week to encourage us to experience the local Spanish culture and cuisine. One of my most memorable experiences was the hike to Montserrat, a stunning monastery located an hour away from Barcelona.

Pros
  • Delicious food options
  • Great public transportation system
  • Very fun nightlife
Cons
  • Housing options can vary (by location and quality)
  • Safety (lots of pickpockets)

The staff was so helpful in every step of the way and made the transition to Barcelona super smooth. Plus, Barcelona truly has it all. I never ran out of things to do, whether it be exploring the Gothic Quarter, hanging at the beach, or having tapas with friends. My classes were also super interesting and the teachers were great. 10/10!!!!!!
