Teacher

Going through Greenheart was an excellent decision! Working with their team was pleasant and stress free. They were very helpful and kind. I had a easy transition into Thailand and got a teaching position easily. I loved living in Thailand. I taught 2nd-5th grade. I was well prepared to teach to the students. I also helped teacher the other local teachers English! One morning I was about to start class and an elephant walked by our school! Love the kids and the people in my small rural town. I learned some words in Thai quickly that helped me get around. I enjoyed working at my school and had an opputnity to travel as well. Besides traveling around Thailand I also travel to Lao and Cambodia. I recommend Greenheart if you want to travel stress free and be happy!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?

Beyond helpful and supportive

When I decided to move halfway across the world and change careers, I was looking for company that would provide me not only guidance but nonstop support in the move. Greenheart gave me just that and much, much more. They provided me with pre-departure information. They provided me with knowledge I could use upon my first arrival in Thailand. They would notify me if there was any change in the process to get the visa for Thailand . They gave me a community throughout this experience of past, current and future particiapants. They made it a family; a place to ask questions, big or small, and a place to meet people in my same position, making a huge move! Greenhearts continues to be their for me and gave me a place to call family! I’ve been beyond gracious and happy to have gone through Greenheart Travek!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be ready for the unknown. Thailand is notorious for telling the foreigners last. You won’t always know when an event is being help, or when/how grades are due. You need to prepare yourself to “go with the flow” and never be told anything. This was the hardest thing to learn.

the BEST decision you will make

I used Greenheart Travel to move, live, and teach abroad in Thailand, after watching a friend successfully go through it. Upon graduating from college with a BS in education, I knew I wanted to teach abroad at some point but I had no idea where to start. I started teaching 4th grade in Virginia while starting to do some research, during which I landed on greenheart travel. From my first interaction with Sara, I knew this program was for me. Greenheart made the entire "scary" process, extremely simple, and made me feel so comfortable in my decision to come abroad. I have LOVED my time teaching and living in Thailand, and I don't plan to leave anytime soon. I am eternally grateful for finding greenheart and helping to make my dreams a reality!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?

I would honestly say the most nerve-racking moment for me was waving goodbye to my parents at the airport. It was surreal that I did not know when I would see them again, as I only booked a one-way ticket and they had no immediate plans to visit. At that moment it felt so surreal. I felt like I grew as a person in that moment though and realized I can truly pave my own path and do anything I set my mind to.

TEACH ABROAD :)

I decided to teach abroad with Greenheart Travel after seeing a high school friend doing it. At the time of applying, I was living outside of Washington, DC and teaching 4th grade. I loved my teaching job, but knew I wanted to teach abroad at some time during my life. While I said I wanted to do this, I had NO idea where to start, until I found Greenheart. My initial talks with Sara were so natural and I felt I had found a personable organization that would help me figure out the best steps for me to talk. Sara, and the rest of the Greenheart Travel team, made the transition seamless. Once arriving in Thailand, I was handed into the care of a company called Xplore Asia. Xplore Asia provided me with my TESOL training courses in Thailand, and helping me land a teaching job in southern Thailand. I graduated with a BS in elementary and special education, and spent time teaching in an ESL classroom in the United States. Because of this, I did not need the TESOL course, and looking back on everything, I wish I decided not to do it. The information was extremely useful for people without backgrounds in education but it was not what I needed. The entire process of Xplore Asia finding you a job was so easy though. They did EVERYTHING for us which lifted a weight off of our shoulders. I am extremely happy I made the decision to come abroad with Greenheart Travel. I have fallen in love with Thailand and have NO plans to leave anytime soon!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing I saw, and STILL do see, is the amount of people families will fit on their motorbikes. It is so funny to see 4-5 people on a single motorbike, the mother holding a newborn, 2 children and a father on board as well. I was shocked the first time I saw it. They even have motorbike baby seats!

From Arkansas to Bangkok

Originally, I am from a small, mountain town in Arkansas. I love where I'm from, but I thought the big city might be the change I was looking for to shake things up a bit. So, I settled on Bangkok for my placement school. I went a more non-conventional route in my living situation. I managed to find an abandoned clothes factory turned studio apartment by a few local artists, and I now live with 10 other people from all over the world - from Thai to Russian. We cook dinner together, we go out into the city night-life together, and they provide new insights into the "unseen" Bangkok than I ever could have imagined.
But amid the exhilarating highs, it took quite a number of lows to get where I was finally happy in my placement town. This will happen whether you're in Bangkok, Phuket, or a small village in Isan. Change is hard, and the loneliness will follow suit. The people you love back home will find it hard to connect to those pains, but they are there for you. Ultimately, It's a time to grab yourself by the bootstraps and feel the waves of a real adventure lapping at your shore. Don't miss out because you're afraid of the sea.

Amazing Summer

The summer program was beyond amazing! I was able to experience a new culture, make new friends, and on top of that teach in a wonderful school. I felt prepared going into my placement and was super lucky to get to stay with my orientation group for the length of my stay in Thailand. Teaching at an international school was definitely not what I had in mind when I pictured going to Thailand, but my time there was great! I LOVED my school, my kids, and the people I worked with. My small group from orientation had a blast traveling together and making new friends during our stay!

Best Decision I Ever Made

My Thai Life for 2-months was the most incredible experience I have ever had. I hesitated to teach abroad for years and for numerous reasons. Now, I would never doubt or feel hesitant again. Teaching in Thailand was absolutely life-altering. I became a better educator. I became more culturally enlightened. I became more patient, humble, and appreciative. I challenged myself in mind, body, and spirit. I made so many life-long Thai friends. I would travel with Greenheart again in a heart beat. The entire staff was impeccable. I am so grateful I chose them for my teaching adventure. XploreAsia their partnering team in Thailand was also amazing. Both companies taught me so much about the reality and life of traveling and teaching abroad. This program also teaches you how to gracefully handle the positive and negative aspects that are indeed inevitable when you are out of your comfort zone. I appreciated every moment and would recommend to anyone who has thought about teaching abroad to just, GO!

What would you improve about this program?
I wish I could be of service and provide improvement strategies but I truly do not have any suggestions on how this could have been any better.

A Look Back

The Greenheart staff, Sarah Thacker in particular, was very helpful. From the program requirements, to the cv/resume templates, to the visa paperwork, Greenheart led the way. I would have preferred that visa paperwork arrive earlier because that created some stress as I prepared to leave, but otherwise very helpful. I was placed in an International School in the Bangkok suburb of Nonthaburi. The school provided very decent housing on campus. The curriculum was provided, but at times lacked clarity and needed materials. I was asked to be lead teacher and served as an intermediary between the staffing agency and the other American teachers. This occasionally led to some headaches, but overall I embraced the role. Perhaps, the lead teacher should be paid slightly better for the handful of additional tasks. Which were at times quite time consuming. Our school was supportive and the students were brilliant. They were eager to learn English, and it was my pleasure to teach them. Sarah Thacker answered question after question prior to my departure, and I am grateful for that.

What would you improve about this program?
Teachers would prefer to learn about where they are being placed prior to arriving in Thailand. It is a source of anxiety.

Questions & Answers

You need to have your original degree with you and authenticated by the government. It can be done in Thailand too, but don’t count on that. To get a work permit you will also need to get a non-b visa, which the schools/agencies help you obtain. You can’t get a work permit without the proper visa.
