Can’t wait to go back!

Ten years ago my husband and I took our two girls on an adventure of culture and service. The experience was so profound, I go every year. The Mayan people of Guatemala are kind, proud, and rich in cultural history. I go back to serve and always return receiving far more. Local Hope is a dynamic, life changing organization with unquestionable integrity. With 30 years of experience, the leadership of this non-profit have designed trips that are tailored to my interests and skills. I have never felt the slightest bit of concern for safety which is truly blown out of proportion by media. The trips immerse you in the beauty and history of Guatemala balanced with a service component that is so satisfying. I want to encourage everybody, all ages to experience the magic of this adventure.

What was your funniest moment?
That would be “funnest” for me, hiking Lake Chicibal with Mayan women and their enchanting tales of the creation story from the Mayan mythological view. The lake and their altars of flowers for loved ones was stunning.
Pros
  • That third world countries can be navigated safely with the right people.
  • I have enjoyed a lifetime of travel and the richness of this experience is unmatched.
  • I love the immersion with the local people, I felt welcome.
Cons
  • Absolutely none, this trip is for everybody.

Life changing!

This organization has been bringing volunteer groups to Guatemala for more than 30 years and really has a winning formula! I felt safe, taken care of, ate great food, learned amazing things about the Mayan culture working right next to local people doing work I truly enjoyed and made good use of my talents. I loved this trip so much that I have been back to Guatemala with Local Hope multiple times. Would strongly recommend this organization to anyone interested in having a profound experience and tons of fun learning and sharing of themselves!

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment was when I used my poor Spanish to accidentally ask someone if they were pregnant (instead of embarrassed). We all laughed a lot!
Pros
  • Experienced organization
  • Meaningful volunteer experience
  • New sights, people, friends
Cons
  • None
