About Program

From hot and sweltering region bordering India, the landscape of Nepal rises steeply and sometimes steadily to reach the mighty Himalayas. Within this, you will find green valleys, deep gorges, forests, steep terrains and rivers that crisscross the landscape. The people of Nepal are as diverse as the landscape. The population is made up of Aryans that migrated from India and Iran, and Tibeto-Burmans groups that arrived from Tibet, China and Burma. RCDP-Nepal’s volunteer program taps into this beauty of Nepal by offering cultural program, where you will get intimately connected with the warm and ever welcoming people. With our volunteer in Nepal programs you will work to improve the lives of desperately poor people.

Our program in Nepal includes Orphanage work, Teaching English in school or Buddhist monastery, Health Project, Nature Conservation Project, Photo Journalism and many others.

To attempt to articulate this experience is a welcomed but daunting task. How do I let the world know in a way they'll understand that serving in your preferred manner in a place like Nepal is viscerally uplifting, a certain collective peace & divinity is felt just being there. The locals certainly add to it's truly unique, beauty and offer their time & support at the drop of a hat were they to see me struggle in any way. I went because when I was registering for my university courses I saw an advertisement that mentioned teaching monks in the monasteries English. I've always been fascinated with Buddhism but also my departed grandmother was a devout Buddhist, chanting every morning. I went to Nepal three weeks later for a little over a month. From the moment the father of my host family picked me up at the airport I felt safe and in a state of true wonder, even at 1:00am and also meeting for the first time. I could say so many different things about the genuine kindness of the Nepali people, especially the Kalanki Mundi area. The bottom line is, if you are considering volunteering in Nepal, I encourage you to be honest with yourself and the truth is you already know that something profoundly sacred and morally enlightening awaits. I now hope you will be subtly brave and take the step towards going. I've lived many different lives and had many unique chapters of existence so I believed for a while that I was truly desensitized. Nepal was the shock to my heart that was badly needed and I wasn't even aware. I learned more from my students than they did from me it feels like. I felt a deep sense of purpose being blessed enough to guide those boys for a few weeks. The Light has a funny way of creeping in no matter how much resistance there is. The family that was kind enough to host me was absolutely amazing. I felt so close to them and know our relationship will continue. They truly felt like family to me. Didi and her son were the first to answer any questions at all I may have had, or places I needed to get to. But after a couple mornings you have your routine down and it becomes muscle memory, no worries at all. The home cooking was punctual and incredible, promptly on the table at breakfast lunch and dinner, same time everyday unless your schedule requires otherwise. Beautiful and dense architecture catches the eye at every turn, and the people seem to let life unfold organically, with smiles on their faces and a big warm welcome resting fittingly on the edge of their lips. It's a place you can be homesick for without ever having been there, and once you go you'll never be the same. The food, the captivating monasteries, and exotic wildlife just add to it's divine allure. Do yourself a favor, pack lightly, embrace humility, and buy a one-way ticket to change the way you view the world and reorganize the priorities you think are important. Teaching in the monastery was one of the most enlightening things I've ever done in my life and I learned so much about myself just by stepping outside myself. The Nepali people were there to catch me if I fell and they helped me heal in a way I never have experienced before. For that, I am eternally grateful. I say by not going and volunteering in Nepal is doing a disservice to oneself. Say yes in a polite email to Anjana, and I promise you she will take care of the rest and will be right by your side if ever need be. The program is organized, reliable, easy to communicate with, and were always clear in their words and honored any requests with a genuine kindness and welcoming disposition. I love RCDP and will be working with them again and again. Go be useful and see what happens. Trust me :)

Pros
  • Clear & structured program routine
  • Incredibly kind locals and host family, as well as RCDP staff alike
  • Very affordable cost of living if coming from America
Cons
  • I couldn't take more time off work in America
  • Couldn't stay longer
  • Didn't have enough room to take back good cheap clothes and gear for sale in Kathmandu

Medical Volunteer Program Nepal

My time in Chitwan, Nepal was wonderful.l and I am so glad I went through Rcdp. The experience at the hospital allowed me to see medicine in a different way. The host family was extremely kind and compassionate. The volunteer coordinators made sure everything was set before I arrived and answered any questions I had along the journey. It was very easy to contact the coordinators for help. Transportation was set up and provided. I highly recommend this life changing volunteer program! You will not regret your time abroad!

Lovely experience in Nepal

Superb program if you’re looking to diversify your perspective or dwell into the unknown. The communication with the team is easy and all arrangements will be taken care of. In regards to the actual content of this experience - the quality was also really good, I stayed in Buddhist monastery on the outskirts of Nepal and taught monks aged from 7 - 17, English, Maths and Science. I was given a room and plenty of free time as well as my meals being provided by the monastery. The children were a pleasure to teach and observing the lifestyle was just remarkable.

Pros
  • Experience overall
  • Communication with staff
  • Fee time
Cons
  • Lack of knowledge regarding teaching content prior to arrivsl

My exp

Yesterday was a very intense day full of activities. Early in the morning, seeing that it was raining heavily, our jungle excursion was canceled, and we proposed a bike ride. What we thought was going to be a simple walk through the town turned out to be an intense tour of the Nepalese landscape in which we found several animals such as elephants, deer, horses, cows, dogs or ducks. In addition, our favorite moment was when we had to cross a puddle that looked like a river as it covered us to the hip (shoutout to the leech that stung Barbara). It lasted longer than many of us could endure and some even got lost but we really enjoyed it. After a well-deserved rest, and seeing that the river still did not go down, a jungle jeep excursion was organized. Before we entered, we were lucky and honored to have been able to attend a wrestling battle live between two 12-year-old children, there were no injuries ... They warned us that silence was needed to see the animals, which It took us a little to respect, that may be the reason why we "only" saw deer, monkeys, birds and crocodiles. At the time of resting we were playing board games like the Resistance or the high pencil in which we discovered new colors such as sapphire, pistachio and persimmon. We ended the day watching a somewhat peculiar local dance that surprised some and disappointed others. And finally, Quique and the Javis woke up for dinner.

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment was when we went to the rafting

My experience

We had a lot of fun and the people were amazing. Lovely food and housing as well as comfort and flexibility from the organization. Rita was an amazing host mother and the kids from the orphanage were lovely. The school was very tired but lots of fun.
The local coordinator, Lilah, was extremely helping and assisted us in every single way needed. As well as the general coordinator in Nepal who always answered our questions and helped us in what we needed.

The hostels provided by the organization were always amazing and had great service.
Overall: amazing experience, will definitely repeat in the near future.

Paco in Nepal

Translated by Go Overseas:

Nepal

Our day began with the usual breakfast scheduled for eight. Despite some usual delays, we managed to reach our destination on time and began our jungle excursion without further delay. After two and a half hours of constant surprises and emotion, walking surrounded by vegetation and some animals, such as deer and the occasional crocodile, we finished our little adventure. Upon returning to the hotel we were waiting for a delicious Nepali delicacy (macaroni and cheese). After a deep nap we venture back into the jungle, but this time on the back of an elephant. However, some colleagues decided not to do this activity, since it was against their moral values. After two hours of constant rocking and the odd scare, we arrived back at the hotel. Once we had dinner, we decided to do some recreational activity to strengthen our links as pineapple. Finally, exhausted because of fatigue, we each turn to his humble abode in order to rub.

Nepal

What would you improve about this program?

The best travel

This travel was really impressive and shoking. The part of the tourism in Katmandú with all the activities were amazing but all the group coincided on the part that the volunteer part was a bit short and we would like to be a bit more time in the town. The first days activities were an adventure. The rafting was very funny and the jungle walk was a bit disappointing because we can’t see a lot of animals but it was also great. The families were also amazing and all were very hospitable, they were always helping you. The work in the garden is very tired but also great. The time we passed with the kids were the best time. They have always a smile in their face and is very funny all the game that we did. The classes were a bit hard, especially if you have the first classes.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
The most shoking thing is the contrast between the city (Spain) and the small town.
