Hello, my name is Natalia Macias and I’m 23 years old. I am Mexican American and I’m currently living in Asheville, NC.
Choosing Go Palestine was probably one of the best decisions I could have made. Not only is everyone friendly and welcoming, but everything you do in the center is purposeful and makes you feel as if you’re truly reaching your highest potential. In Hebron, it’s not very common to see foreigners around, so when the Palestinian people see you they try their hardest to speak English to make sure you’re welcomed here! It was truly an amazing experience.
During my stay here, I volunteered in the Teaching English as a Volunteer program. My day to day schedule varied quite a bit but it was fun because it kept me on my toes. I was able to assist in the old center with three of the English teachers who are amazing at everything they do. I also was able to teach English in the villages nearby such as Beit Ommar, Sureef, and Sair. Apart from teaching I was also able to see the beautiful Old City of Hebron along with Akka and a few other cities. Learning Arabic 3 hours a week was also something I was able to do. I had an amazing teacher who truly helped me understand the language.
All the volunteers and those who work at the center make sure you have an unforgettable time here.
Being able to see the Palestinian culture first hand was honestly something so indescribable and extremely pleasant to see. In the Palestinian community I was able to see how no one is homeless here. If you don’t have food, your neighbors will supply. If you don’t have something, your neighbor is sure to help you with the biggest smile. Everyone is kind to each other. I think the most surprising thing I saw while being here was how the Palestinian people are able to rise up even under an occupation. They don’t sit around waiting for change to happen, they make the change happen. There are amazing activists we were able to meet that were leading these changes. The Palestinians keep rising even when they are restricted from so many things.
I can say I have felt safe or even safer here in Hebron than I ever have in America. It’s very important to not be discouraged by western media saying that Hebron is conflicted. Once you’re here, you’ll see that this place is probably one of the safest places you’ll be. Everyone is kind and protective of one another even if you’re a foreigner. There’s nothing to be afraid of when coming to Palestine. It’s safe and if you get lost, there’s surely someone who is willing to help you.
I would recommend 10 out of 10 to come volunteer at the center through Go Palestine. For me it was a life change and eye opening experience that I will talk about positively for the rest of my life. Hebron has even shaped the way I think now. You’ll get the chance to help around the community while making new friendships that will last a lifetime.

Palestine is a place that I dreamed to visit and discover, I was seeing Palestine through the TV or on YouTube, but it wasn't as I thought it would be. Palestine was for me all about conflict, tensions and riots and there is no one inch is safe. However, yesterday I came back from this unbelievable experience in Palestine. I have joined Teach English in Palestine program for one month and I would say it was an AMAZING experience ever. Palestine is so beautiful, people are very nice, food is delicious and the atmosphere all in all was amazing. I think the country is misunderstood by many people in the world, including me!

The program was very good, I taught English to adults who are 17-21 years old. The connection between me and the students was indescribable, the students were very eager to learn English and interact with all topics we have discussed during the class. The Palestinian center's staff were very cooperative especially Ms. Ahlam who helped me a lot during teaching English at the center. The center is very cozy place where I met internationals from many countries in the world and I got to meet locals who are interested to know more about other cultures. Arabic was also part of this great experience, I have learned many things in the language and I would sure continue learning it! Thank you so much for this great experience and hope to see you all in the future!

What would you improve about this program?

I think they need to work more on raising the awareness about the safety in Palestine and show the other side of it to change the mind of many of people around the globe who are afraid to come and visit Palestine like I was before!

What is your favorite travel memory?

One of my favorite travel memories is from my trip to Germany. While exploring Berlin, I stumbled upon a small and traditional restaurant that only seated a few people. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by the owner, who welcomed me with a warm smile and seated me at the counter. I ordered the Döner kebab.

What followed was a culinary journey that was both delicious and memorable. The chef prepared an array of dishes that showcased the flavors and techniques of German cuisine. Each dish was presented with care and attention to detail, and the chef took the time to explain each ingredient and preparation method.

The combination of delicious food, attentive service, and the cozy atmosphere of the restaurant made for an unforgettable experience that I will always cherish. This memory reminds me of the joys of traveling, discovering new cultures, and experiencing different cuisines.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Working with Go Palestine and international volunteers and interns has been a transformative experience for me. Through my work, I have been exposed to different cultures, perspectives, and ways of thinking. This has broadened my horizons and helped me develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for diversity.

In addition, working with volunteers and interns from different backgrounds has taught me valuable interpersonal skills such as communication, teamwork, and cultural sensitivity. I have learned to navigate different communication styles and cultural norms, which has made me a more effective and empathetic communicator.

Moreover, working with Go Palestine has given me a greater sense of purpose and social responsibility. I have been involved in projects and initiatives that have a tangible impact on the lives of Palestinians and contribute to the wider community. This has instilled in me a sense of purpose and a desire to work towards a more just and equitable world.

Overall, working with Go Palestine and international volunteers and interns has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. It has opened up new opportunities, broadened my perspective, and given me a greater sense of purpose and social responsibility

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

One international volunteer who worked with Go Palestine shared an inspiring story about her experience teaching English to a group of Palestinian girls in a refugee camp. When she first started teaching, the girls were shy and hesitant to speak in English. However, as the weeks went on, they began to gain confidence and speak more fluently.

One day, the volunteer gave the girls a challenging writing assignment, which involved writing a personal essay in English. To her surprise, one of the girls submitted a powerful essay about her experience growing up in the refugee camp and the challenges she faced as a young woman in Palestine.
