About Program

In our biological monitoring program, volunteers have the chance to monitor our fauna populations over time. This helps us develop accurate species lists and population density reports which will be used to make future conservation decisions. Activities of this program may include: Walk along transects during two hours in the morning and in the evening making annotations of all bird/mammal/herp sightings, record GIS coordinates of species reported, set up and check camera traps for mammal activity, monitor mammal and parrot claylick usage, enter the data in our database and create distribution maps of specific species that are threatened of extinction.

You will be provided with training on the monitoring methods used as well as the identification of species in the field.

Amazing time - definitely doing it again

It was amazing! I was there for 3 weeks and was able to see all types of animals - a puma and jaguar included! We were very lucky! You would probably want to stay a minimum of 2 weeks to feel that you've experienced it properly. The first week you need just to adjust to the climate and way of life as it us so different. There was no pressure to do anything you didnt want to, and Adriana (the director) and Magno were always there - it was more like we were just friends exploring the jungle together. I'll definitely go back one day!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
1. Definitely seeing the puma - we were just walking along not specifically looking out for animals this time, and saw it 7 meters from us. It was so quick. It ran off into the bushes carrying something it was eating. I think it was eating an agote.

La mejor experiencia vivida!

Translation by the Go Overseas Team

We started our adventure with my friend .. From the first contact with Adriana and the Staff we felt that human warmth so necessary to feel comfortable, like being at home ..
If you are a nature lover, this project is definitely for you! The sensations that we feel when we are walking through the Amazon are incomparable, the different diurnal and nocturnal sounds, the sightings, the traces of felines as well as the Jaguar, every meter the jungle awaited us with a different surprise!
We also had the beautiful experience of harvesting cocoa, and then participate in the preparation of chocolate, pure, natural and delicious!
Magno, the person in charge of the place, impossible to avoid naming him, a `so good and healthy person, he has taught us so much, we will thank him forever ..
A trip where very nice friendships are generated with people from other countries, and there are moments that will never be forgotten!
Thank you very much EcoDecision for making us live an unforgettable experience!

Comenzamos nuestra aventura junto a mi amiga..

The most amazing week!

Of many visits to the Peruvian Jungle, the volunteer program at Wasai Lodge was by far the most complete and unforgettable experience I have had. Not only did I get to participate in as many, if not more tours than most tourists, but helped a biologist with her research into the mammals of the area. This included monitoring motion activated cameras, going on primate monitoring expeditions and a night spent monitoring a macaw population in the Venado station. Everyone really went out of their way to make me feel at home and comfortable! Nothing was too much trouble. The cook prepared special vegetarian meals just for me -even when there were no other vegetarians. (In fact, the lovely staff and getting to talk to them and hear their stories was one of my highlights). I feel I had every opportunity I could ask for, from the twice-daily jungle walks to monitor monkeys, to collecting seeds and planting trees. The activities you do will of course depend on the timing of the volunteer programs they are running, but I know Adriana (volunteer coordinator) went out of her way to make sure I had an interesting, varied and unforgettable experience. Would also like to mention that Adriana and the other staff went above and beyond to make sure I was safe and comfortable. When my flight got cancelled they supported me when the airline wouldn't in making sure I was okay until I managed to get an alternative flight. The tourist tours you get to join in on will, of course, depend on timings and what groups are there. I got to go on 2 night walks, 2 caiman searches, made my own cocoa, a botanical walk and a visit to the Sandoval lake!
I could go on and on! I would recommend at least a basic level of spanish- although Adriana is fluent in English so this is perhaps not necessary.
