About Program

Since 2001, we have been studying and monitoring the local plant and wildlife communities in our private reserve, including birds, mammals, herpetofauna, and insects. Identifying the species and their habitats is vital to understand and manage the forest effectively. Volunteers assist our research team with investigations, from bird banding to installing and monitoring trail cameras. These studies provide information on species diversity and population density and also allow us to identify possible release areas for mammals and birds from our wildlife rescue centre.
The rescue centre receives many species of animals rescued from the illegal wildlife trade, for rehabilitation and re-release into the forest away from the danger of human settlements.
Come and experience a unique way of life in the rainforest whilst helping care for our animals and learning about the ecosystem.
We welcome volunteers of any age and from all walks of life, no previous experience is necessary.

the best experience of my life

My time in Taricaya, my experience has changed me so much, I finished my volunteer work three months ago and have returned home. Now I am moving forward towards my new dream, which was made possible by my experiences there and the people I met.

good point
∙ Very friendly and knowledgeable staff
∙ Meet volunteers from all over the world and veterinary students from all over South America. I am particularly impressed by the strong friendships with Spanish-speaking South American students. I don't speak the language at all, but the experience transcended language barriers.
∙ Feel nature by swimming in the Amazon River, doing research in the jungle, exploring the Amazon jungle at night and the day, and mountain biking in the jungle.
∙ Away from the daily conveniences of life, I realize how wasteful our bad life behaviors are and how they are harming the planet. When it comes to the smartphone, I couldn’t use it there, but I love it. I was released from the stress of it. I felt how much we are addicted to it in a daily life.
∙ The program also provides an opportunity to learn about the differences between the problems faced by industrialized and developing countries. I live in a developed country, Japan, but I think that the problems of developing countries are no stranger to us and that everyone living on the planet should face these problems.

What was your funniest moment?
It was very difficult to choose one, because everything is fantastic for me. If I had to say something, I would say that the Canopy activity was interesting. We went up to a high place and from there, we observed the jungle through a telescope and looked for animals. The view of the Amazon jungle from the top, and the fresh wind I feel there, is unbelievably wonderful. There I spotted monkeys walking in the trees and birds perched in the distance.
Pros
  • Meet many people including volunteers, internship students, and professionals
  • Put yourself in an extraordinary world
  • Feel nature magnificently
Cons
  • Get many mosquito bites

Totally recommend

While I was doing an internship I learned so much about their different programmes in the Amazon rainforest such us reforestation of native species, identifying species of lepidoptera, reintroduction of different groups of animals (mammals, reptiles, birds), identifying birds in the canopy at dawn. The atmosphere was great. The staff was super helpful and being surrounded by nature gave me inspiration. I would totally recommend it! Especially if you're looking for a program that can help conservation initiatives!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Nothing unfamiliar, I went there as a vegetarian and the food was super tasty!
