About Program

South Africa is renowned for its vigorous culture, sweeping landscapes and remarkable wildlife – but communities, children’s homes and wildlife reserves need the help of volunteers through organizations like International Student Volunteers (ISV) to address disadvantage and environmental concerns.

Through volunteering with ISV, you can be involved in life-changing community development projects, taking part in tasks such as building schools and playgrounds, urban renewal programs, water and sanitation development and classroom support. On ISV’s wildlife conservation and environmental management projects, you could be assisting researchers in surveying and monitoring of flora and fauna used for conservation management, or volunteering on a wildlife rehabilitation centre. Come join us to make a meaningful difference in South Africa!

This program is currently not being promoted on Go Overseas by its provider. Check with ISV (International Student Volunteers) for the most up-to-date information regarding the status of this program.

South Africa

I spent my first two weeks building bike paths for underprivileged kids in Cape Town, South Africa. It was the most rewarding part of the trip.

Our group first had to dig a path. We moved 10,000 lbs. of dirt, rock, and concrete in a little under 10 days.

That was the physical labor part of our volunteering. The more meaningful work came from working with the kids in the preschool. Most of the children had learning disabilities and came from low-income homes. It was heartbreaking to learn some of their stories. All of our hard work paid off just to see how happy they were to be in school.

What would you improve about this program?
More interaction with the children.

Go! Go! Go! You will not be disappointed!

International Student Volunteer's South Africa program was pretty much flawless. Everything was very well organized and had no problems with the travels, planning, or my time spent in Africa. During my time across seas, I not only met some of the most amazing people, but the experience itself changed my whole outlook on life. After coming back home after this amazing trip, I was already looking into what trip I wanted to go on next, preferable through ISV. I wouldn't change a single thing and I encourage everyone to explore the world and make a difference. ISV is the perfect place to start.

What would you improve about this program?
If I absolutely had to change one thing about the ISV program, it would probably be to maybe prepare the volunteers a little more as to what to take. I brought a lot of unnecessary things as well as wish I would have brought other items from home.

Unforgettable Experience

South Africa was an unforgettable experience for me because I did so many things I thought I would never get to do, such as pet cheetahs, go spelunking, explore caves and interact with animals in such a close atmosphere. I think South Africa is one of the most culturally diverse places on this planet and going there opened up a whole new perspective in my life that i will always cherish. I would recommend any ISV trips to anyone who wants to adventure in a safe, learning, and fun environment.

What would you improve about this program?
If I could change one thing about the program it would be the costs. I think ISV should make a better effort to help kids who are committed to going fundraiser for their trip and maybe plan more activities that are more interactive with the local people.

ISV South African Conservation Trip

Dagse! To those of you unfamiliar, this is Afrikaans, a language I was able to learn during my time in South Africa. As I stood in the JFK Airport, I was incredibly nervous. However, the other volunteers were very friendly, I still chat with most to this day, and the volunteer project had profound implications.

I had wanted to travel to Africa to experience the diverse culture, and also experience one of the world's last strongholds for wildlife. Although I was able to work on a reserve (Mesebe game reserve in the Limpopo region) and photograph some of the most beautiful animals on Earth, I was impacted even more so through the humanitarian efforts. Twice, I travelled to the village school to assist teaching. Working with adults and grade-school children really gave me a chance to impact lives and have my own impacted as well. The kids always had the biggest smiles oddly enough, were captivated by the exotic culture I represented! The short time spent with these children was enough to promise myself a return, to see their faces once again. The village where I stayed (Telekishi) was just outside a smaller town, and I would frequently discover children lingering around, waiting for the volunteers to offer a game of soccer. Sweetest kids ever. At the end of the trip, these kids drew me illustrations in my notebook, and I gave them my bracelets.

The time spent with the schoolchildren, and the kids near Telekishi, has determined my joining Peace Corps. Spending time with these kids, sharing stories from America, and listening to their stories of Africa, or their favorite animals, has influenced and drawn a career path. I am currently enrolled in a TESOL (teaching english to students of other languages) program in hopes of returning to the Limpopo region with the Peace Corps. I cannot imagine my life without seeing everyone I met in South Africa once again.
Of course, the two weeks I spent traveling were remarkable, and I created memories that even now, while writing this review, I am able to relive. If you have a passion for wildlife, these two weeks will seem like reverie. I recall spending HOURS admiring a leopardess. I sat in silence perfectly content, stunned by such beauty!

From spending time teaching in schools and playing soccer with kids, to humbly observing African wildlife, this experience has provided me with unforgettable memories and an unquenchable thirst for traveling!

What would you improve about this program?
As odd as it sounds, I did not enjoy the free time during the volunteer project. I understand the importance of free time but I would have much preferred to drive back to the school, or walk into town, and spend time playing soccer with the kids. In a sense, the two weeks traveling are an extended "free-time," so I would have enjoyed spending the most time possible with the children in Telekishi. Perhaps if students were given a choice between free-time and time spent at the school, or with the village children.

Life changing!

This trip completely changed my life for the better! The people were so friendly and welcoming! I made friends I still talk to in Africa! The volunteer experience and travel took me to some breath taking places and pushed me out of my comfort zone to do things I never imagined such as climbing mountains, diving with sharks, caving, ect! I'll never forget the little faces we worked with in Cape Town! It was definitely a trip of a life time!

What would you improve about this program?
It was pretty perfect! It is a little pricey, but completely worth it!

Conservation programme

This trip was the best experience I have ever had. I have met friends from all over the world that I still keep in contact a year later. Waking up and walking to breakfast to be greated by cheetahs was amazing, and being able to provide help for shingwedzi cheetah reserve was icing on the cake. Then to see all the sights around South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique is am trip of a lifetime something you will never get anywhere else
Loved every minute of it, only thing I hated was leaving my project leaders after two weeks

What would you improve about this program?
I would recommend to pack less bottoms and.more tops. It can get very cold in their winter

Awe-Inspiring Africa

Enjoyed volunteering on a cheetah reserve, walking elephants, horseback riding, exploring local markets, surfing, caving, cliff jumping, and watching a cheetah-ostrich chase! Amazing people, amazing food, culture shock. Great opportunity for getting involved and making a difference you can see. Truly and experience I will never forget.

What would you improve about this program?
It is quite a lot of money for University students to come up with so perhaps more fundraising opportunities would be helpful.

Life changing experience

I went with ISV to South Africa in 2013, and it was the best experience of my life! It was an amazing opportunity, I would go back in the morning if I could!

It was extremely emotional at times but knowing that you are making a difference is the best feeling I have ever experienced l! I made the trip with my friend Emma and we still keep in contact with the friends that we made there. You get to meet people from all over the world, two of the girls have already made the long journey from Canada and Montana to Ireland to see us. I would advise anyone to do the 4 weeks as the adventure tour is just as brilliant as the first two weeks!

From building the classroom to elephant encounters, visiting orphanages to surfing it really has something for everyone! Not to mention all the beautiful places that we visited Mozambique, Swaziland and all the different cultures and languages.

If anyone is reading this review considering travelling with ISV to South Africa then I would say do it!
I can't put into words how much this experience has effected me and it is honestly a life changing experience!

T.I.A.

What would you improve about this program?
I was a bit worried before I went as we felt there wasn't enough contact.
