Impact

Plan My Gap Year is committed to providing ethical volunteer opportunities that truly benefit the local communities. We have personally vetted all of our Volunteer Programs in every destination. We support a small network of Volunteer Programs abroad that we have specifically chosen due to their efforts being sustainable for our volunteers and the local communities alike. We work closely with each of our local teams to ensure we are assessing and adapting to ensure quality experiences for all involved.

For this reason, PMGY does not provide volunteer opportunities in orphanages in any of our locations. Research and studies have shown that visiting and volunteering in orphanages has the potential to generate an industry that separates children from their families. In turn, putting children at increased risk of neglect and abuse. Therefore, we do not support these institutions with our volunteer network.

Instead, we focus on offering alternative childcare volunteer opportunities whereby children come to and from the placement setting each day. In other words, our local teams collaborate with childcare projects which do not offer any form of residential care. These are safe, responsible, and vetted projects, where participants continue to provide valued assistance supporting local staff.

Program Highlights

  • Most Affordable – PMGY’s programs are accessible to everyone who wants to make a difference, through low fees and high-impact projects.

Teaching English in Hanoi

I volunteered teaching English in Vietnam with PMGY. Before I left, PMGY sent me a handbook with all the information I could need on Vietnam, but maybe could have told me a little bit more about the English teaching. I arrived in Vietnam still a little unsure exactly what I'd be doing, namely what age group I'd be teaching and what my teaching would entail. This may be to do with the fact that the teaching is organised by a partner organisation to PMGY so it is not their responsibility.

The teaching was fun but I found it a bit repetitive so by the end of my six weeks there I was spending two days a week teaching English, two days at the orphanage and one at the disabled school. It could not have been easier to change my timetable which was great.

You live in the volunteer house with around 10 - 15 other volunteers who are based in Hanoi at the various projects, the house was a lot of fun. We would have dinner together every night and go out together. You make close friends with everyone within days which is so fun.

Overall, I'd highly recommend PMGY. The volunteering is rewarding (particularly the orphange and disabled school) and the time at the house is the best!

What would you improve about this program?
A more tangible benefit to the local populations and greater structure to what is expected of the volunteers

Hanoi- life changing experience

I had originally planned to volunteer for an organisation in Africa Uganda but circumstances at that the time meant it would not be safe. I began researching different organisations on the internet and came accross plan my gap year. I contacted plan my gap year for more information and was impressed with the quick response. I had my trip rediverted to vietnam and booked within a week. Philip at plan my gap year was very helpful and answered promptly to any questions I had.
I volunteered in Vietnam for two months, I quickly fell in love with the culture, food and lifestyle. I volunteered to work with disabled children. I was based at a childrens centre in Hanoi helping children with autism and cerebal palsy, such an amazing experience. My only advise would be to learn some Vietnamese before you arrive in Vietnam, basics will get you by fine. The Vietnamese will appreciate that you are trying and in return will also make an effort to communicate.
The accommodation in Hanoi was fantastic, I made some great friends from all different walks of life. There is always something to do, Hanoi is a great city. I made the most of my trip and travelled out of Hanoi at the weekends to Sapa, Halong bay, Mai Chau the list continues...all breath taking views and adventure you will never forget.
I continued my travelling after my volunteer experience to different countries but in my opinion it cannot compare to Vietnam.
Definately the best decision I have ever made...choose Vietnam you won't regret it!

Fantastic experience - if you move out of your comfort zone!

My volunteering was in a school in Hanoi, Vietnam in February 2015. I was much older than most of the volunteers - 56 - although there were other older people at times. The "youngsters" were totally welcoming and friendly from the outset and I can't recall feel that level of inclusivity in a long time. While I drew the line at clubbing until 5am and getting up to teach the next day, I chatted, played games, had a laugh, went for a drink and loved the karaoke.

The teaching itself was a great experience. As a teacher in a further education college back home, I'm not used to being greeted with cheers in the morning, hellos all day and a round of applause at the end of the lesson!

The teachers provided lessons plans in advance for the first week and then fewer in the second week as they were happy for us to do what we wanted with the students. So, it was partly structured and partly our own choice of games and songs to liven things up, although the students do already play games. They work from a set book that builds on the same stories and grammatical structures year on year. I didn't have to teach any grammar - mostly worked on pronunciation. The children picked up correct pronunciation of words quicker than the teachers!

We taught from 8:20 until 11:00 and then caught a bus back to the volunteer house for lunch as classes re-start at 13:45. As I had prior teaching experience, I taught most of the classes myself with the teacher at the back; my colleague usually took the last 15 minutes of the lesson so,there some flexibility depending in your experience and confidence levels. I was so impressed at how confident and talented the young volunteers were.

We were invited to a wedding and, had we been there longer, would probably have been invited the teachers' houses. This was a short, two week stint but it did feel very full on as there are the buses and the terrible traffic to contend with 4 times a day and not much sleep due to various noises. We did ask for some time off so that we could maintain our enthusiasm and were given it, which did make me feel a bit guilty as the children go to school 6 days a week from 07:30!

I was very lucky indeed to have a great buddy to work with so we could debrief on how our classes had gone - celebrate the good ones and rationalise the less successful ones, sometimes over a glass of gin (and that was a difficult search in itself!)

I undertook this as part of much longer travels, as did most people. My husband came with me and went off go Ho Chi Minh City and Cambodia while I was in the school. As predicted, the volunteering is likely to be the highlight of the whole trip as you are so involved with local culture and living, which is all so different from the normal tourist experience. I am now staying in five star hotels and missing the time I had with the crowd. Volunteering isn't always comfortable but it does get into your soul!

The staff at the house, many of whom are local volunteers, were excellent, supporting us all the way. Lovely people, every one and they work long hours to support us.

I have recommended this to my teenage children as a great way to enhance their CV and see their confidence grow. Just watching 18 year olds who don't drive at home boldly heading off through the crazy Hanoi traffic is amazing and makes them feel they can do anything!

What would you improve about this program?
Some ideas in advance of what to prepare or take would be handy - I ran out of songs and, by now, the children will know them all!
