Amazing opportunity

I had this trip booked for about a year, and unfortunately the week before I got sick. Between the programme manager and the local team I was able to move my trip to two weeks later. The team was extremely understanding and very accommodating to anything that I suggested. Whilst away, my group and I were able to adapt the introduction week’s itinerary to what we wanted to do and see. The local team really cared about what we were doing and was able to advise the best places to get food, juices and which shops are less expensive.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
A banana curry!
Pros
  • Meeting new likeminded people
  • Experiencing a new culture
  • Delicious local food

Good support from online and local team, best trip.

Both the online team and the local team were friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. It was my first solo trip, and their guidance made it as easy as possible, when I did have an issue, they could help give advice and sort it out.

The accommodation was lovely, with brilliant staff and delicious local food. The other volunteers were wonderful, all like-minded people of all ages from around the world.

All excursions could be organized through the local team, who gave us a good price and sorted everything, normally with pick up and drop off to our accommodation.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Raising money and bringing more school supplies to help out schools, as you can't buy everything out there. Even if you're school doesn't need everything you bring, plenty of other schools will be.
Pros
  • helping and making a difference.
  • meeting likeminded people

Volunteering with IVHQ in Guatemala Medical

Volunteering with IVHQ in Guatemala was an experience I’ll always appreciate. I worked in a geriatric clinic, seeing patients every day, and it was both challenging and incredibly fulfilling. The work was hands-on, and I felt like I was actually contributing rather than just observing. Some days were tough, but getting to know the patients and seeing the impact of even small gestures made it all worth it.

The local staff was supportive and really made an effort to involve volunteers in meaningful ways. IVHQ had everything well-organized while still allowing us enough flexibility to learn and engage. Outside of volunteering, getting to experience Guatemala—the culture, the people, the food—made the whole thing even more special.

I’d definitely recommend this program to anyone interested in healthcare, volunteering, or just wanting to do something meaningful while immersing themselves in a new place.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Hiking two volcanoes in 24 hours was one of the most intense things I’ve ever done. After a brutal 10-hour trek up Acatenango, we finally reached base camp, exhausted and freezing. The entire place was covered in thick fog, and we could hear what sounded like thunder rumbling through the mountains. It was unsettling, especially because we couldn’t see more than a few feet in front of us—just knowing there were steep drop-offs nearby made it even worse.

At some point, our guide casually mentioned that it wasn’t thunder—it was the sound of Fuego erupting. That was the moment it really hit me that we were camping next to an active volcano. Later that night, when the fog cleared, we could actually see lava shooting into the sky. It was surreal. The exhaustion, the altitude, and the sheer intensity of the whole experience made it something I’ll never forget.
Pros
  • Hands-on experience and meaningful work
  • Cultural immersion with weekend adventures
  • Well-organized program
Cons
  • Limited resources – The clinic didn’t always have all the equipment or supplies we’d typically expect.
  • Unpredictable placement – You don’t always know where you’ll be working until you arrive, which can be nerve-racking.

Best experience ever!

Sometimes the biggest reward comes with stepping out of your comfort zone. Although this is true with most big adventures IVHQ made the process so much easier and the outcome was totally amazing. I'm so looking forward to doing it again, I'm already checking my calendar to see what fits. The school where I taught was great and the kids were the BEST. The local team was there whenever you needed them and were very well organized. The location was beautiful and the sunrise beach walks were breathtaking. We had some wonderful nighttime activities and the friendships will always be remembered.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be prepared to fall in love, and know this will change your life for the better.
Pros
  • teaching
  • friendships
  • Beauty
Cons
  • 22 hours of travel to get there
  • had to get use to the hot weather
  • Hard to think of a third, but I guess I could say time zone differences?

Changed my life !

IVHQ did an amazing job keeping me up to date and inquiring as I got closer to my departure date. I felt like the preparation guide was fantastic and well-organized. When I arrived in Kenya I was met by an individual who called my driver. I did not wait long at all, the only issue was I was unaware that my driver was a little unsure of where my housing would be and had to call somebody for that information(mind you I arrived in Kenya at 3 am)

I arrived safely at my accommodation. I was unaware that the accommodation I arrived at would be temporary, and that I would be going to a new house after orientation but that went smoothly. I was very comfortable with my host family and I was with 6 other volunteers. I felt comfortable at my accommodation and was pleasantly surprised by how welcoming everybody was. I would recommend IVHQ to anybody looking to travel and make an impact. My local team was always available if I needed something and I felt heard if I had an issue and they worked to fix it. Because of this experience, I will be going on another in January and was actually able to get a friend to join me in the next trip. This trip truly changed my view of the world!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Through my entire trip I had the most nerves when I landed. I suppose I hadn’t really thought about it much but when I landed and got off my plane I realized I was 8,000 miles away from home, by myself and had no family or friends with me, I was entirely alone and exhausted from traveling. I was extremely emotional at this point and I was honestly really scared. After many years I pulled myself together and just went through the motions. I know I needed my bags and to find my driver so that’s what I did. Truly at this point there were no other options but I was okay! I had never traveled outside the United States and I was okay, I did it!
Pros
  • Eye opener to the rest of the world
  • Character building
  • Self fulfilling
Cons
  • Anxiety
  • Language barrier
  • Issues at my school

Excellent Experience in Costa Rica

I traveled alone but was able to spend time exploring safely with another person/housemate and also do community service in the mornings at a wonderful location. I will definitely do another program with IVHQ. I was able to get by with my minimal Spanish as everyone is very nice and accommodating, plus I’m inspired to keep up learning Spanish. This type of travel allows you to immerse more into the community than a typical vacation and is much more fulfilling! I thought the local placement was amazing and is not something I would ever experience otherwise.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would stay a few days more
Pros
  • Easy to plan - they do it
  • More fulfilling bc do volunteer work
  • Affordable
Cons
  • My Spanish skills
  • Do not know anything before you actually arrive
  • None

Volunteered 6 weeks in Córdoba, Argentina

I spent 6 weeks in Córdoba, Argentina as a sports volunteer. Even though school was not in session, I was able to attend 3 different sports camps and even volunteered at a soup kitchen. The experience was rewarding, allowed me to practice my imperfect Spanish and I met fellow volunteers from around the world.

The local team opened their home and hearts to the volunteers and made us feel welcome, answered our multiple questions to the best of their ability and created a safe and fun environment for all.

It was my first volunteer experience abroad and it won't be my last!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Go for it!

I will never forget this experience

I feel so lucky to have had this experience! The program was incredible, I didn't want to leave. I loved how social it was having a house full of people from all over the world. I definitely recommend doing at least 4 weeks as 2 certainly wasn't enough. The local team were amazing and I never once felt unsafe the entire trip! There is so much opportunity and time outside of your placement to do lots of fun activities such as going on a safari or to the nearby waterfalls. Already thinking about planning my next IVHQ trip.

Transformative Volunteer Experience in Bali

Volunteering in Bali for the Healthcare education teaching through IVHQ in overall makes my experience great. It was a transformative experience that combined meaningful service with cultural immersion for me. From contributing to community projects like teaching the basic healthcare education and cultural discovery through introduction week with soaking in Bali's stunning landscapes and vibrant traditions, every moment was deeply fulfilling for me. The journey highlighted the impact of collective effort, fostering personal growth and giving back where needed, gratitude, and a deeper connection to the world. It’s a highly recommended experience for those seeking purpose, seeking adventure, and seeking a meaningful way to explore the world.

What was your funniest moment?
Engaging with local communities, very fun and happy people.

First is the best

This was my first international Volunteer and I had a great opportunity to explore the places, new culture, and way of living of local people. The program process and guidelines are very understandable and comfortable. Also, local teams and coordinators are great and very supportive of every new volunteer and guide easily to involved in the volunteer task as per the schedule. Teaching the local students was one of the best things that ever happened. They were very respectful, energetic, and learners. I would suggest to upcoming volunteers not to be nervous because everything with local teams will be fun and they will take care of very smoothly and politely.

What was your funniest moment?
It was first at the school. We were new to the student and for us same as well. Since English is very limited for them and their BAHASA (local language) is limited to us, there were couple of awkward moment created, and we both laughed. Eventually, they felt comfortable with us, which was very satisfying at the end.
Pros
  • All local teams and coordinators are very helpful, supportive and active.
  • Learned about new language
  • explored new places especially temples are unique and famous.
Cons
  • Local teams and Coordinators should learn more about their cultural history to provide more information to new volunteers
