CEA CAPA is willing and able to assist students with learning disabilities and physical disabilities. Students are requested to disclose disabilities through the application health forms as part of their application and in discussion with their application advisor or program manager. The earlier CEA CAPA is made aware of learning or physical disabilities the better we can work with the student, institution, and overseas team to tailor an Individualized Education Program if necessary to support the student.

Use of recycling bins in Study Center locations and in CEA CAPA housing

Going to Dublin was adventure! I was very fortunate that my internship placement was incredible. I was able to work with an award-winning, creative ad agency in Dublin. During my time there, we hosted a promotional event at a local pub for the brand Orchard Thieves. At the event, we had Shaggy,the rapper, perform radio hits and we had photos shoots with local artists. It was an amazing experience!

What would you improve about this program?

Selfishly, I wish the program was longer - it ended too soon. Also, I wish we could have met our directors and professor over Skype before we went to Dublin. The only other suggestion is the internship placement was later than I would have liked. I think our application was very in depth and detailed, but we didn't interview until a month out. I am a type A personality and I would have liked to know my internship earlier.

Dublin, Ireland was the best experience I have had so far in my college career. From the amazing faculty and staff in the States and abroad, to the culture that I was able to immerse myself in for four months, to all of the traveling I was able to do and all of the people I had the opportunity of meeting. While the housing arrangements were not ideal (Dublin has a housing crisis and our apartments were not the greatest-- #ArchwayCourtForever), the experience was so incredibly worth it. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone looking to study abroad. I participated in the service learning program in Dublin and worked with elementary school aged kids in an after school program. Dublin, Ireland has my heart and I will be back not soon enough.

What would you improve about this program?

The housing situation, though it is very difficult to find housing in Dublin. At times it seemed like all of our professors gave us presentations/papers/projects at the exact same time. I think for the students' sake, the assignments should be more spread out.

The bus trips were the favorite part of the trip for me. The staff at CEA shared so much of their knowledge with us & made my experience even better. Getting to go on weekend trips with them helped me learn more than I would if i was traveling alone. Take advantage of the staff being there to help! Ask them questions! The more you ask the more you are going to lean on your trip! Don't be afraid to try & explore with your friends. It is a great opportunity to just walk around Dulbin & try to find your way around. You will see things that you haven't seen before. The more you explore, the more comfortable you will feel as the trip continues. When you get there, find places to get groceries around your apartment to make sure you know where to go if you need anything. Lastly, don't sit around in your apartment. I know you're going to be tired, but you don't want to regret not taking all the opportunities you could to see other places.

What would you improve about this program?

The one thing I would want changed is the living condition. The location & apartments were nice except for the fact that they were not cleaned very well.

From the moment my plane landed, to the final dinner night, I was supported and guided by staff throughout. They were constantly available and more than willing to help with any question, whether academic or not.

I felt incredibly safe in Dublin. Though I wouldn't recommend it, I wasn't bothered once while walking home alone on a weekend night.

Though the housing was very different from what an on-campus American accommodation is like, I loved it. There were some struggles with the different heat and electricity systems, but everything was worked out by our school's administration.

In terms of academics, I was completely blown away by the difference. Instead of being drilled with daily assignments, weekly terminology quizzes, and giant textbooks, I learned hands-on application in my field. I felt more prepared by the classes I took in Dublin than the past year and a half at my American school.

Dublin is a great city-a lot going on but small enough that you will know your way around sooner than you may think. The CAPA program advisers are right on campus and such wonderful people, willing and able to help with anything you might need. Also, through CAPA you are able to get an internship abroad, an experience that is invaluable and will look great on a resume!
One of my favorite parts of being in Dublin was Thursday nights-two friends and I went to the same pub each Thursday, where we got to know the bartenders and the two guys that played live music. It wasn't a night to drink too much or go wild, just a chance for us to be immersed in the local culture and become "regulars" if just for three months. On the last night the band dedicated a song to us and I got to go on stage and sing with them for the whole bar. Just traveling to other countries is great, but being part of a city for long enough to make relationships like those are what made it so worth it to me.

What would you improve about this program?

My internship was not what I had hoped it would be. I still learned a lot, but I felt underworked and wished I had a different placement. So my only critique of the program would be I wish they had made sure at all of the internship sites that there was a clear role for us interns and guaranteed work. (That being said, most people in my program had good experiences so not everyone had my issue!)

The program as a whole is amazing. The staff are supportive throughout the entire process (even during applying). The CAPA classes are very fun and I learned way more than I thought I would about Dublin. CAPA also gives its students the opportunity to feel at home in the city by providing bus passes and encouraging cultural immersion--the staff are Irish as well. There are also opportunities to explore the country, such as going to Cliffs of Moher or Belfast. I highly recommend the CAPA program!

What would you improve about this program?

I would change the living situation. I lived with 3 other American students and would have preferred to live with students from Europe instead.

I owe all who I am today to CAPA. Without them, I wouldn't have had two other incredible internships after. Dress for Success Dublin was more than welcoming to me. They are the sweetest people. I never felt afraid or homesick while I was away, but I'm certainly homesick for Dublin now that I'm back.

What would you improve about this program?

I would say the Griffith College beds could be better, but that's it!

There was one weekend where my roommates were all traveling and I was on campus by myself, I took a walk into the city center. I walked to Temple Bar where I saw an amazing street performance that drew in a large crowd. Afterwards I stepped into one of the pubs to have a pint, and was immediately welcomed by a group of people at the bar. Realizing that I was by myself, they invited me to have a pint with them and the rest of the afternoon was filled with great craic with a bunch of friendly strangers.

What would you improve about this program?

More networking opportunities beforehand with both people in the CAPA program, as well as with students throughout Griffith College and even throughout Dublin altogether.

Why did you choose this program?

I always wanted to study abroad for as long as I could remember and finally found the perfect program with CAPA through my University's business school. I wanted to do an internship in addition to taking classes in an English-speaking country, so CAPA's Dublin, Ireland program was ideal. I was able to take classes relevant to my major, as well as gain professional experience in my field of study at my internship.

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

CAPA provided us with almost everything we needed over the summer. We stayed in an "aparthotel" called Staycity, where the lobby was open 24/7 with receptionists and the apartments were cleaned once a week. It was in a perfect location as well, so I really enjoyed living there!

CAPA also provided us with insurance, public transportation within the city, tuition fees, and used our information to place us into our internships for us. We were responsible for our meals and weekend trips.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

Don't get carried away with spending money as if you were on vacation! It's great to treat yourself and try new things once in a while to make the most of the experience, but always remember that you are living there for an extended period of time that might cause your expenses to really add up! Local grocery shops are very inexpensive in Dublin, so take advantage of buying groceries to cook at home instead of eating out all the time.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

Almost everyone's schedules are different, depending on your internship and classes. The standard week is two and a half days of your internship and three days of classes, sometimes with the two overlapping. Here and there our schedules got flipped around so that we would have three-day weekends, allowing us more time to travel around, not only Ireland but the rest of Europe as well.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

One of my biggest fears going into my experience was definitely how my internship was going to be. I was nervous to be the only American in an office full of Irish locals, but was pleasantly surprised to find that my company had employees from all over the world. Everyone was so welcoming and eager to help me learn, giving me the best experience I could have had.

Is there anything you would have done differently on this trip?

One thing I definitely would have done differently was my packing strategy. People always say to pack light, but I really wish I packed lighter. Not only did I end up having to pay overage fees both on the way to Europe and on the way back to America, but I also didn't end up using a lot of what I brought with me. Be realistic and remember there are stores across the pond too in case you forget something!

Julius Moyo - CAPA Program Manager. Julius Moyo earned his Bachelor of Science in Communication from Boston University, and he joined the team of Program Managers at CAPA’s Boston office in August 2012. His interest in international education is motivated greatly by his own experience travelling to various corners of the globe as a child. His favorite thing to do in a foreign city is to experience the public transportation system, and he continues to collect transit maps from the various cities he’s visited. During his time at Boston University, Julius directed enrollment services and clientele outreach for the largest student-run after school program in Boston. He also greatly enjoyed advising first year students, and looks forward to assisting students through the pre-departure services team here at CAPA.

Did you study or intern abroad? If so, where and what inspired you to go?

Julius: I did not intern or study abroad, and it is one of my biggest regrets about my time as an undergraduate. I attended a university that championed its study abroad opportunities: most of my peers spent multiple terms abroad. Between on-campus jobs, leadership positions I enjoyed holding and coursework for my minor, my only option was to consider a Summer abroad. At the time, I didn’t realize how many different ways I could financially incorporate a Summer term abroad into my undergraduate experience – which ended up being one of the main reasons I didn’t end up spending a term abroad.

What aspect of working at CAPA inspires you the most?

Julius: During my time at CAPA, I have had multiple opportunities to advise students whose semester abroad would be their first time out of the country (and sometimes out of state). Watching each student navigate his or her own fears, anxieties, challenges and successes in a unique way is exciting to watch. In part, I attribute the supportive community CAPA provides through its experienced staff and engaging academic and cultural programming to these student successes.

How do you see the field of international education changing over the next 10 years?

Julius: I certainly foresee many variants of the International Education experience eventually becoming hallmarks of the undergraduate curriculum here in the United States. The opportunities to broaden one’s sociological perspective, witness – and contribute to - globalization first hand, as well as to fully immerse themselves in a holistic personal growth experience are endless, and I feel that employers, campus administrators and parents (oftentimes the financiers) are beginning to embrace this more commonly.

If you had to choose one, what destination would you recommend to prospective students? Why?

Julius: While I generally assert that each CAPA location presents itself as an ideal urban classroom to any student dependent upon what he or she seeks from the experience, I thoroughly enjoy advising students on the CAPA Beijing Program. Here lies an opportunity for any US student to experience one of the most historically impactful economic, cultural and political landscapes in the world. Students on the program live in an international student dormitory at one of Beijing’s most well known institutions: I feel that this residential opportunity presents itself as a truly dynamic cultural (and social) opportunity for many of our students.

What is one piece of advice you would offer someone considering going abroad?

Julius: As a Program Manager, I work with students through their pre-departure process. I think the one thing many students wish they did was begin planning earlier for their term abroad. Conversations with your family, academic advisors, financial assistance office advisors and your study abroad office can really be pivotal in shaping your experience. Something as simple as applying for a passport can end up costing more money (and stress) than necessary when done at the last minute as you prepare to embark on your journey.

Any tips for first time travelers?

Julius: My number one tip for a first time traveler is to never let a bad day or a bad experience ruin your trip. It’s all about the journey, after all; and sometimes, this will include rude people, bad luck, a tough case of culture shock or even just a runny nose. It’s important to grow from any setbacks or discouraging moments, and remember to laugh them off while you enjoy all the seemingly meaningless (and sometimes indescribably life-changing) moments during your time abroad!
