Brilliant and rewarding couple of months

I had such a great time on the Vietnam programme. I enjoyed the teaching, even when being challenged, and it was so lovely to build connections with the kids and the teaching assistants - I miss them lots already. The programme also brings together such a great group of people, and I have come away from this experience with so many great memories and new friends. Gotoco are great at facilitating the programme, answering any queries, and organising the start and end of programme trips! The TESOL and organisation of this could, however, be improved!!

A Pho-nomenal Experience

I volunteered on the 10 week Vietnam programme. It was a great experience from start to finish, I don't believe there is another opportunity quite like it. From all of the amazing people I met, to all of the weird and wacky situations I found myself in, I had immense fun on the programme. I would say that the single best experience was being welcomed into a new culture and given the opportunity to live life in Vietnam from a truly unique perspective. The work-life balance allowed me to enjoy local backpacker trails whilst maintaining a sense of purpose in my travels.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Saying yes to every random opportunity we were given, whether that was going to lunch with our hotel's manager, trying exotic foods (crocodile?!) dancing in front of our schools or building relationships with our teaching assistants.
Pros
  • Food
  • Culture
  • Support
Cons
  • Communication

Great Opportunity

This is a Great way to travel while learning a new skill and really integrating into a culture. Working in a community is so different from being a tourist there. I am very grateful for all I learned, the people I met and the new experiences I had. Some cons would be the bad communication, it took ages for them to respond to my emails. Another thing was that I had a bad experience with a coordinator, so don't rely on the support so much. It also takes a while for your money to be reimbursed! But other than that I overall am really glad I did this program.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Going on a trek through the Tayrona National Park alone and seeing monkeys and the most beautiful beaches!

Teaching experience

As nervous as I was to start this program, I thouroughly enjoyed the teaching aspect. I feel as though I did well in handling a classroom as well as making the lessons fun and engaging for the kids. I also felt I brought a gentil yet energentic and approachable character to the classroom, which helped alot with my confidence. I also enjoyed travelling to the different cities other gotocoers were and experiencing the different lifestyles there. The most enjoyable moments from the trip was the school sports day where all the kids had to do fun activities to race against each other to see which students retained the most English.

What was your funniest moment?
When I was teaching an AEN student decided to take my flash cards and teach the lesson. I found this mildly amusing so decided to film him teaching the class. Once I put my phone down to take the flash cards back the student took my phone! He refused to give my phone back to me unless I gave him back the flash cards!
Pros
  • Increasing independence
  • Increasing confidence
  • Gaining experience in the field
Cons
  • Finding places to eat in your lunch breaks and during dinner time can be time consuming
  • Sometimes the language barrier can be difficult
  • Cultural adjustment

Amazing experience that changed my life

I had an amazing experience with the Gotoco! During my time on the Vietnam program I made incredible friends for life, immersed in a new culture which brought me out of my comfort zone and created some unforgettable memories. We went on trips as a group and with the school we were partnered with, this allowed us to get to know our peers and to fully embrace life in Vietnam.

The time with the children was remarkable and made me smile everyday. I developed beautiful connections with them which made me not want to leave.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Embrace everything and enjoy the experience. It may be scary but soon everything will feel like a home away from home, you'll make amazing friends and be welcomed in a country that you'll never want to leave.
Pros
  • Fun cultural activities
  • Support throughout
  • Time to make new friends
Cons
  • TEFL course can be confusing and delayed
  • Schedule with school can be disorganised

Great Cultural Immersion and Teaching Experience

I had a great time on the Vietnam TEFL programme. I met a great group of people who I worked alongside with and have made friends for life.

GoToCo were great in providing local teaching experience in language centres with wonderful Vietnamese staff and I was able to experience local life.

We were also provided with a TESOL course and assistance where needed.

In particular the coordinators of the Vietnam programme were helpful and supportive throughout, Hayley in particular went above and beyond helping us.

Finally, the programme focused a lot on cultural immersion so it was great to experience teaching local children out in there incredibly rural areas, see how they live, and then experience the other side of Vietnam in trips to Hanoi, Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An which were insightful and fun.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Say yes to everything and do it without fear of judgement. It may mean singing wheels on the bus a capella to a group of 4 year olds who won’t stop laughing. But it’ll also be a lot of fun!
Pros
  • On hands experience
  • Amazing Vietnamese staff
  • Meeting new people

The most enjoyable moments of the trip were in my opinion: lots of enjoyable moments on the trip - camping in the jungle, meet-ups in Hanoi and Tam Coc and Ninh Binh city. So, overall, in summary, there absolutely were lots of enjoyable moments on the trip overall!
The highlights of the overall experience were as follows in my opinion: there was great food, great in depth introduction to Vietnamese culture, teaching overall really fun - would recommend! it was a great experience on the whole, in summary!

An amazing and unforgettable experience

The experience with my programme has been life-changing, it has been an unforgettable and inspiring experience that I would do it all over again. I have loved the whole experience in rural Thailand, from meeting people within the programme and making friends with them, to experiencing how people live in a small rural village, to being in a completely different school environment and a completely different structure, I loved every second of it. It has been a real eye-opener. I have really enjoyed my time experiencing and witnessing another culture completely different to mine. I have enjoyed where I stayed which was so different to what I am used to and really enjoyed my time teaching the students in my school. Overall, this experience has been amazing and I am so grateful that I had this opportunity that I can take with me for the rest of my life. This experience also helped me to grow as an individual, be resilient and step out of my comfort zone. Thank you Gotoco!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
During my time at my village, I went to some Hot Springs in one of the National Parks with my teachers, and I have never seen hot springs, this was such an amazing day out, the most popular thing to do there is boil eggs in the natural water...it was something I never done before, I loved it!
Pros
  • Having a cultural exchange with children in the school
  • Learning about a new culture, food, language, customs
  • Growing as an individual, independence, resilience, stepping out of my comfort zone
Cons
  • The language barrier is very difficult
