Shanghai Or Bust

My experience was a little unusual in that I was already in country when I first contacted Teaching Nomad about teaching opportunities in Shanghai. At the time I was a travelling spouse. That is, my wife had the job that allowed us to arrive in China in August of 2016. Within a couple of weeks of arriving in Shanghai, I signed up to Teaching Nomad and had my first interview in early October for a History/ESL post at a Chinese international school in the south west of the city. The interview went well and I was offered a contract which I accepted. Throughout the process, Teaching Nomad were supportive and clearly had a firm grasp of the ins and outs of finding a job in China generally and in Shanghai in particular.

I had cause to use Teaching Nomad a second time when my first school decided to relocate its campus to a neighboring province at the end of my second year at the school. I was not able to go with the school and once again my advisor at TN was very helpful in providing job information re: other schools in Shanghai. And once again TN helped me find a school and a job, this time teaching Humanities at a bilingual school.

Two years later, I am on the move again. My wife has been head hunted by an international school in Suzhou and when she accepted its offer, it became clear I would need to find another school. On this occasion, TN were not able to place me in a school but it wasn't for lack of effort. Suzhou is something of a niche market for international teachers in that the turnover rate of staff in schools in the city is very low and thus jobs are not easy to find. This did not stop TN from trying, and once again potential job opportunities appeared in my inbox as and when they opened up. Covid-19 has made finding a job even more challenging this time around but TN has adapted and adjusted to the crisis well. Online/Virtual Job Fairs have been particularly successful in this regard.

I have no hesitation in recommending Teaching Nomad to anyone thinking about living and working in China. Either from another country or (like me) someone already in country. It is a very competent organization with advisors who know their market and who are relentless in trying to find suitable positions for their clients.

Teaching Nomad was incredible

My recruiter/consultant was Jayne Donabie and she was so helpful and patient from start to finish. She was always available to answer my question, whether via email or a Skype call. She is knowledgable about each of the schools that she represents and can offer great insight into living in China as an expat. She made what could have been an overwhelming and complicated process really straightforward and stress-free. She made me feel confident in my decision to move forward with my applications and to move to China.

Swift and efficient support!

I would be very happy to recommend this company, they came up as top 8 companies for teaching in China and it shows. They are incredibly helpful and always prompt in replying to emails. They found suitable positions that where very attractive, from the job opportunities for me that were a good match for my experience and qualifications. I was very grateful to Marissa for all her help and support; she made what can be a tricky process, easy and stress free. Also found Sean's help very useful when it came to choosing the appropriate TEFL course for what I aimed to do in China and potentially after.

Very supportive Consultant - Jayne Donabie

My experience with teachingnomad was fantastic. Jayne was my consultant/recruiter. She was quick to respond, polite, prompt, and very professional. I would recommend her to anyone who is looking to teach abroad as she is very supporting and responds quickly to any queries or messages you may have. Jayne guided me throughout the process of the online recruitment fair and has great energy and enthusiasm for her role. I felt that having a recruiter living in the country you are applying to very supportive.
Thank you Jayne for all of the support.

Great Company to Work With for Teaching Abroad

Teaching Nomad is a fantastic company. They are efficient and are very thorough when assisting you with securing a job position. Moira was my recruiter and she is amazing, she helped me with everything from making sure I had the right qualifications, to finding a great job for me. I was able to attend a virtual job fair with various schools in China, where I was able to set up an interview and get in contact with various schools. I was offered a position shortly after their virtual job fair. The process is simple when having guidance from your recruiter.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
If you're considering teaching abroad you should absolutely do it. Having a program like teaching Nomad is an excellent choice to place you and get you started on your journey.

Teaching Nomad made a great effort

Teaching Nomad made a great effort in order to help me find an opportunity in China! Although the Coronavirus outbreak has affected my ability to visit China at this time, I am thankful that I got to work with Sylvia Spanos. She was very helpful! I would not have it any other way. Perhaps after the pandemic, I will be able to reapply for opportunities in Asia but for now, I will sit tight in the USA. If you are serious about going to Asia, Teaching Nomad is the place to work with. They will help you with every aspect of the job application process.

My Experience With Teaching Nomad.

I had been working in a university in China for nearly three years when I decided it was time for a change. With two education degrees, I was hoping to get a job in an international school. I reached out to Teaching Nomad after hearing great things about the company from my colleagues.

I had a very positive experience with Teaching Nomad, Tiffany Xiao was my agent and she was an absolute star! She helped me to find a number of suitable positions and she provided frequent contact throughout the process. She also helped me to get information regarding a teaching license, which I am excited to start in the upcoming months!

I really cannot recommend Teaching Nomad enough! Because of this company and my wonderful agent I have an amazing job in an international school in Beijing. I cannot wait to start my international school teaching career there!

What would you improve about this program?
There is nothing that really comes to mind right now.

Questions & Answers

At this time, many schools in China are hiring from overseas and feel confident they will be able to secure working visas for overseas hires. We would encourage you to begin getting your documents authenticated now so you are prepared for the visa application.

Hello Erik, most of the English teaching roles posted on our site require candidates from native English speaking countries. However we do have subject teacher positions for non-native speakers if they have experience teaching that subject. We also have TEFL course + job placement opportunities in many countries that don't require the candidates to be native speakers. You can learn more about...

Yes! A teaching degree is not required to teach abroad. In many cases experience and/or a TEFL certification is an adequate qualification. We place couples all the time!

In such a case we would recommend the individual to contact the authorities to report the assault. This would include local police as well as the consulate or Embassy of your country. Of course we would never work with a school or organization that allowed an assault to occur.
