Awesome place to study abroad

John Cabot is a great place to study abroad. It offers a wide range of interesting classes in the arts and sciences, with small class sizes and faculty who care about the students. The campus is right in the center of Rome so the nightlife is amazing. There is a fantastic cafe on campus that serves both Italian and American food, and dozens of restaurants nearby, but the grocery store is a short walk if you want to save money. There are a lot of things to do in Rome, but there are plenty of opportunities for weekend trips outside the city, either in Italy or in other European countries.

Pros
  • Small classes
  • High quality academics
  • Amazing location

John Cabot Summer I Session Study Abroad Review

Overall, my experience during this study abroad session was positive. It was only a 5 week session, so it definitely flew by very quickly. The campuses at JCU are great: very clean and beautiful buildings with AC which was definitely key during the hot summer here in Rome. The classes were fairly straightforward for a 5 week program, moved quickly but that's to be expected. The only thing preventing this from being a perfect study abroad experience for me, was the housing situation. I was placed in the Trastevere Apartments, which are a mile from the closest campus (25 min walk minimum). I ended up taking the city scooters to class everyday to cut travel time and save my legs which were tired everyday from sightseeing. The distance really became an issue at night, since if you wanted to go out in Trastevere, you would have to walk all the way back in the dark, often times by myself since my friends were placed in better housing right in the heart of Trastevere (Gianicolo & Lungara). In addition to the distance, my housing gave me 8 roommates (luckily all were great) and had NO AC, which in the summer in Rome is a huge problem. I could barely sleep at night even with our balcony window open. They gave us a single fan (which considering there are 7 rooms in our apartment was not very helpful) and the fan didn't even work, the motor ran but the blades didn't spin. So, if you get a housing placement in Gianicolo or Lungara, you will have a great experience. If you get Trastevere Apartments, it will very quickly become incredibly inconvenient. Overall, a positive study abroad experience with one glaring issue.

Pros
  • Great location
  • Beautiful campuses
  • Helpful professors
Cons
  • Housing placement
  • Strict rules
  • Expensive

Second time at JCU!

I studied at JCU in the beginning of 2020 and was sent home because of the COVID-19 pandemic. I returned during the summer of 2022 to sort of finish what I started. JCU has a great location in the very center of Rome. Most of Rome’s major monuments are within a 30 minute walk of the campuses. 2 of the apartment complexes are also in very convenient locations. I am currently in the Lungara apartments which is right across the street from the Guarini campus. Overall, I have had a great experience. Before I got here, it was very difficult to find an address for the Lungara apartment building though. Additionally, I arrived late because of travel and did not go through orientation because I have studied here before. I communicated this to housing and the orientation team, however both departments took multiple days to respond and I received different information from each. Information regarding check in and an orientation schedule was not adequately communicated prior to our arrival in Rome. Additionally we received very short notice when maintenance would be entering our apartments. Academic have been good overall, though I think class schedules need to be amended more for the shorter semester. We had 4 exams in 5 weeks in one of my classes which seemed excessive and unnecessary. I love sitting on the terrace at Guarini to study and do homework. I am also very glad to see that the wifi across all JCU buildings has improved significantly since I was here in 2020. I have overall had a great experience in Rome and definitely recommend JCU to English speaking students who want to study in Italy!

Pros
  • Location
  • Small classes
  • English speaking professors
Cons
  • Pre study communication
  • Hot in summer

I absolutely loved everything about John Cabot University. It was an amazing experience, educational and personal. The tiber cafe has a great variety of food for everyone wants. From personal experience with other dining hall food, tiber has many more options and the food is much better quality. The professors at John cabot university help you succeed and grow as a person. John Cabot is a once in a lifetime experience abs you will create memories and friends that will last forever. The school is in a great location with access to get anywhere around Rome.

Best experience of my life

John Cabot University has been one of the best experiences of my life. Being an american university located in Rome it offers a very unique international environment in which to create long-lasting relationships and have memorable experiences. During my three years as a degree seeker I managed to daily challenge myself with the very broad range of courses offered in all areas. The well-prepared and wonderful professors have all fostered my critical thinking and openness towards the world. I was able to combine my major with multiple minors, providing me with a unique interdisciplinary approach that has developed my critical, creative, and out-of-the-box thinking.

Semester at John Cabot University

I had a great time at John Cabot University. I love that the campus is located the heart of Rome. It was so much fun exploring the city , especially the neighborhood of Trastevere. I also found myself very safe on campus due to the presence of 24/7 security guards. I enjoyed all of my classes. They were all interesting and I was fortunate to have passionate professors. JCU provided numerous opportunities to get involved with planned fun activities. Overall, I met wonderful people at JCU and will never forget my experience!

Degree seeking

I really love Rome, it’s a beautiful city with lots of beautiful corners and history. Roman people are nice but can be really noisy sometimes. The city can be pretty loud and dirty but it’s worth it. The university is really inclusive and I found my courses interesting and helpful but I have to admit that my professors sometimes we’re not the most helpful with my assignments. Although I love the beautiful architecture of Rome and every day is a privilege. I am very lucky to have experienced something so great in my life and I hope that my children will be able to do the same.

Pros
  • Fun
  • New
  • Interesting
Cons
  • Hot in summer
  • Noisy
  • Dirty
