Salary is 2,200,000 to 2,950,000 depending on your resume and the location you teach in South Korea. Tax is income tax-free for certain nationalities.

Applying abroad can be very confusing and stressful process. However, thanks to Korean Horizon that process was made easier. I had a wonderful recruiter named Alistair. He is able to answer any questions you have, make sure you all your documents are in order and guide you through each step. Their agency even assists you when you get to Korea. I am so happy/lucky to have stumbled upon their agency as I would not have been able to get through this without Alistair (Korean Horizon). I would highly recommend their agency.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?

The large number and different kind of documents you needed to acquire

The recruitment agency was very helpful in every aspect of understanding the program, the document that would be needed, the timeframe, etc. I felt really pleased that I could trust the agency and if I had questions the recruiyer was always available. The recruiter would respond immediately when available and also ensured that should I have any queries I should send an email. Once I got to Korea, he was still available on Kakaotalk, even during quarantine when I phased an issue with my laptop charger.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?

The most nerve-wracking moment was when I had to do a lesson demonstration in front of the other EPIK candidates as if they were elementary students. However, it went very well according to the EPIK staff member whom was observing. This was because I prepared thoroughly and he was there to check everything every step of the way.

I was extremely apprehensive about applying to EPIK because I had so many questions at every stage, but Korean Horizons made the process so easy. Alistair was there to answer any and all of my concerns, as well as to guide me step by step through the process. The support didn’t stop there though, Alistair continued to offer guidance after I received my placement and moved into my new home. I am extremely grateful for the help that Korean Horizons and Alistair provided. I would highly recommend!

I truly recommend Korean Horizons with Alistair. I jumped into this without knowing much of the application process and Alistair helped me every step of the way. Through the application, through the interview process, and is still helping after I have arrived in Korea with any questions or things I may need. The application process is long and there is so much paperwork and things that need to get done, and I full-heartedly believe that if it had not been for Alistair's help this whole journey would not have been possible for me, he helped was there ready to answer any questions I may have had without judgment and as quickly as possible. If you're looking for an agency I definitely 100% recommend going with Alistair and Korean Horizons!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?

Getting to Korea I think was the hardest part, not knowing a single person here and just really having to put myself out there and interact with others. Be as friendly and approachable as you can! Everyone is on the same boat as you, trying to figure out the next step and just getting to know people and talking to them, really does help ou feel less lonely and like you have others who understand exactly what you're going through.

Choosing to apply for EPIK through Korean Horizons was the best decision I made. Although it adds a middle man in the application process, the amount of support that is provided is incredible. Korean Horizons provides so much advice, encouragement and answers emails within 24hours. They are here to help for the entirety of your stay in Korea, not just to get you there, and guide you through each part of the process step by step so you do not get overwhelmed too quickly. I am so grateful for everything Korean Horizons has done to make this process as smooth as possible.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?

Accept the help offered by Korean Horizons. You lose nothing while gaining an extra set of eyes for paperwork, a source of knowledge and advice and someone to direct any questions to work to a quick response.

I had been wanting to teach overseas for a few years now but I wasn’t sure how to get started with it. After I took my TEFL course, I ended up applying to teach English in Korea through Korean Horizons. I am really glad I made that decision! Alistair has been extremely helpful in the whole process—from double checking my application and documents, to providing a lot of guidance for the interview and preparation to go to Korea. Even as I am here now in Korea, he is available for advice and support. I highly recommend Korean Horizons!

I applied on my own to EPIK the first time and didn't even get an interview. On my second try, I used Korean Horizons and had so much guidance and support from Alistair Wery from Day 1. Like others, I really don't think I would have been able to make it without his advice and help in preparing for my application and interview. However, Alistair's help did not end after my acceptance into EPIK. Alistair continues to reach out and check in on me, as well as offer a delivery service while I wait for my bank account and ARC to be set up. All of this is so comforting and helpful when you've just moved to another country. :) Furthermore, one thing I really liked about working with Korean Horizons was that even if you did not get accepted into EPIK, Alistair still shared public schools you could directly apply to. It was nice to know that if I did not make it into EPIK, I still had some backup options thanks to Korean Horizons! I have a few friends who are considering applying to EPIK in the future and with all of them, I have told them again and again to apply through Korean Horizons! Thank you Alistair!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?

I still remember how stressed out I was for the EPIK interview. However, before the interview, Alistair provided an amazing list of potential questions, a practice interview, tips on how to present myself, as well as what my answers should focus on. Again, without his advice I know I definitely would have bombed my interview, so I thank Korean Horizons for helping me overcome that stressful and crucial moment!

As a first timer doing this i cannot stress how much Alistair and Korean Horizons has helped me in this journey!! I dont know if i would have even made it this far without Alistair's help!! He was very helpful with everything i needed!! I am able to live my dream thanks to this program!!! I highly reccomend especially going through KH!! Alistair is always quick to respond and help when you need it!!! Whenever i had doubts about anything i was always reassured and redirected to solve the problem! Thank you!!!!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?

I was placed in a rural town and honestly, it turned out so much better than i anticipated!! Loads of things to do plus east to use transportation!!!

Is it a full time permanent job?

All of the positions we provide are full-time 12 month fixed term contracts. It's possible to renew each year.

Am I likely to find a placement if I have no experience of teaching?

Teaching experience is not required. 98% of all new teachers have no prior teaching experience. To apply, you need to have a bachelor. You need to have the commitment to complete the TEFL by your start date and you can apply without one. Hope that this information is useful.

Hey Paul - we did some research and it looks like the salary is controlled by the government, and there are pay grades. Appreciate the question, surely others are wondering too

Why did you choose this program?

I did not exactly choose this program. My TESOL/TESL/TEFL certification was through Oxford Seminars. Oxford Seminars offers graduate placement which lead to my contact with Korean Horizons. Korean Horizons services, prompt responses, and interests in me is what lead me to choose the EPIK program.

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

Korean Horizons provided me with all the information necessary to start teaching abroad. They emailed me the required paperwork in addition to advice on how to fill out the forms. This kind of help was invaluable for someone that had never left the country before. Moreover, Korean Horizons offered mock interviews and key feedback to prepare me for the interview process. That being said, there is plenty of leg work on the applicant end such as getting necessary paperwork notarized and having it apostille in a timely manner.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

The transition from a biweekly paycheck to a monthly salary was a new experience. So, be prepared to budget accordingly!

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

The workday is 8:20-16:20 Monday-Friday in addition to teaching a night class once a week at the local high school for 2 hours.

Note: The high school night class is not a typical requirement of EPIK teachers. I was offered the additional hours and accepted them.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it and/or how did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear was teaching. I had no prior experience and was very concerned about my ability. Fortunately, I reflect on every class and constantly look for ways to improve. Moreover, if something does not work I change it and if something does work I make sure to take note of why it was successful.

What's the most important thing you need to remember when living abroad?

You have to be willing to laugh at yourself and not dwell on mistakes. You are going to fail a lot and that is okay. There's no way to improve without making a mistake. Be prepared to learn and grow with your experiences and remember why you came in the first place.

What position do you hold at Korean Horizons? What has been your career path so far?

Alistair: I’m the consultant here at Korean Horizons and I’ve been working for the company for around 8 years now. I manage all of the incoming applications from new teachers, assist them during the application process, and provide support for all of those teachers currently living and teaching here in South Korea.

I love my job – speaking and meeting to people from all over the world – and it’s so fulfilling! Living here in South Korea, I feel set to remain here and I enjoy my career working for Korean Horizons, helping people achieve their professional teaching goals. Life is good.

Did YOU teach abroad?! If so, where and what inspired you to go?

Alistair: So, I had to get away from my boring job in England. I was in finance and I had enough of the regular boring, day-in-day-out life as an office worker. I needed excitement, so I started traveling and I made some Korean friends who suggested teaching in South Korea - that was it for me!

Before I worked for Korean Horizons, I worked for a private academy and a public school. My private academy was just awful – they didn’t honor the contract (i.e. didn’t pay me, no vacation, no medical) and made my life hell (I wanted honesty.) It seems that a lot of recruitment companies, who recruit for private academies, just care about making money. For my second job, I worked in a public school – it was bliss – and I got everything in my contract (so I was very happy). Though, with my background, teaching wasn’t for me and I began working for Korean Horizons!

What does the future hold for Korean Horizons - any exciting new programs to share?

Alistair: A lot! Have a search online and you will discover that Korean Horizons is probably the most recognizable recruitment company for public schools today, period. There is no other recruitment company that provides public schools to EPIK (nationwide public school program), SMOE (Seoul public school program), IMOE (Incheon public school program), GEPIK (Gyeongi public school program), and GOE (Gyeongsangnamdo public school program). We specialize in public schools and provide no other type of positions. As for the future, quite simply, we are just looking to remain where we are and continue to provide a professional and personalized recruitment service.

What about the future of the teach abroad industry? How do you think international education will change over the next 10 years?

Alistair: The industry is like a business cycle – jumping up and down all of the time. South Korea knows that English education is now a natural requirement for its educated labor force, thus, things will always be on the up!
